Book Synopsis Genetic Diseases of the Skin by : V. M. Der Kaloustian
Download or read book Genetic Diseases of the Skin written by V. M. Der Kaloustian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two organs of the body most accessible to examination are the eye and the skin and its appendages. That is why, it is said, ophthalmological genetics is in such flourishing good health. Dermatological genetics does not seem to have benefited so much from the skin being on the outside, and there are but few dermatological counterparts to the volumes of Sorsby, Waardenburg, Franceschetti and Franr,;ois, among others. But thanks to the growing interest in medical genetics, and the modern sophisticated tech niques of molecular, biochemical, and ultrastructural examination, der matology is beginning to catch up, as the appearance of this volume testifies. Because of the growing body of knowledge and the heightened awareness of genetics by both patients and physicians, dermatologists not only will be asked more often about the inheritance of skin conditions they diagnose but increasingly will have the opportunity to diagnose a variety of inborn errors and syndromes by their dermatologic manifestations. On the other hand, syndromologists, clinical geneticists, and physicians are continually seeing patients with diagnostic clues in the skin that they must be able to appreciate. For both groups this book will be a new and valuable source of help. Spring 1979 F. CLARKE FRASER, Ph.D., M.D.

Book excerpt: Leukoderma is a generic term for any pigmentary dilution, be it congenital or acquired, circumscribed or generalized, devoid of or partially lacking in pig mentation. In the approach to the diagnosis of leukoderma, we have generally first considered the age of onset, whether leukoderma was congenital or ac quired, the extent and pattern of involvement, and the degree of pigmentary dilution. The organization of this monograph reflects this approach. For ex ample, we have separated the section devoted to various disease entities into diffuse and circumscribed leukoderma and the latter into various etiologies such as genetic, metabolic, infectious, and endocrinologic. One of several justifications for this monograph is to present an approach to the diagnosis of leukoderma, as detailed in Part II. In formulating a guide for the physician, we have found some limitations to our previous approach; we therefore offer the following new classification based upon a clini cal-pathologic correlation. This could provide the means to describe both the clinical and pathologic findings in one term.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of this monograph was stimulated on the one hand by experience gained in the study of "cancer families", and on the other, by the frequent perplexed and bewildered comments made by numerous physicians who have expressed amaze ment that we could think that "cancer is hereditary". In reviewing the world literature it became immediately apparent that no compendium on the subject of cancer genetics was available to the physician or research scientist. Therefore this monograph has been written for the following reasons: 1) To illuminate the problem for those who may have missed or ignored the evidence supporting a genetic etiology for certain malignant neoplasms; 2) to supply useful information to all practicing physicians regarding genetic risks to their patients; and 3) to provide new thoughts on the subject for use by cancer investigators. Finally, our paramount hope is that information gleaned through the reading of this monograph may contribute to the early dia gnosis of cancer in members of high risk "cancer families".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In observing the development of modern scientific knowledge, many indivi duals have expressed concern over the rapid growth of information in various specialized disciplines. Over 100 years ago the first Secretary of the Smith sonian Institution, and more recently Dr. Vannevar Bush while proposing the modern expansion of the National Institutes of Health, both noted prob lems that prevented the proper utilization of information by individuals in medical and related scientific fields. These observations, tagether with con comitant implications of future difficulty, are particularly pertinent to the field of oncology. The rapid evolution of the latter discipline has largely been aided by the incorporation of concepts and methods developed over a long period of time, and drawn from a wide variety of other scientific fields. The large body of discoveries that have contributed to our current understanding of neoplasia, however, cannot be viewed as being made up of equal parts. They bring to mind Claude Bernard's view "des determinismes simples et complexes" in the physiological and biochemical regulation of bod ily functions. He was able to observe that the most important and basic of physiologic processes were destined to be fewer in number than those of less fundamental and more highly specialized purpose. He understood that in the future development of medical science, sturlies of the lauer would occupy much of the time and attention of investigators, and were likely to contribute much to scientific literature.

Book Synopsis Mendelian Inheritance in Man by : Victor A. McKusick
Download or read book Mendelian Inheritance in Man written by Victor A. McKusick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mendelian Inheritance in Man: Catalogs of Autosomal Dominant, Autosomal Recessives, and X-Linked Phenotypes presents catalogs in connection with the genetics of the X chromosome. This book provides a catalog of dominant phenotypes and covers other entries, including anomalous hemoglobin, red cell antigenic types, leukocyte types, and serum protein types. This book begins with an overview of how to use the catalogs wherein two classes of entries have been made in each of the catalogs. This text then explains that each entry consists of three parts, namely, the preferred designation, a brief description of the phenotype with genetic information, and key references. This book discusses as well that in the case of recessives, manifestations in heterozygotes are usually listed. The reader is also introduced to the definition of dominant and recessive used in the preparation of the catalogs. This book is a valuable resource for experimental geneticists, physicians, and research workers.
