Book excerpt: Evoked potentials have been used for decades to assess neurologic function in outpatient studies and are now routinely used in the operating room during surgery. Illustrated Manual of Clinical Evoked Potentials is a modern, practical guide to performing these studies and interpreting the results. The book is uniquely organized as a singular resource that provides the necessary background for understanding and conducting evoked potential studies. It functions as a multi-purpose text, atlas, and reading session, with numerous examples of studies and findings and discussion of key takeaways. Divided into five chapters, the book opens with an introduction to the basics of data acquisition and interpretation that lays the foundation for the modality-specific chapters that follow. The next group of chapters are in-depth reviews of visual, brainstem auditory, and somatosensory evoked potentials. Each of these chapters lays out the specifics of the modality and study protocol with examples to show how things should—and should not—be done. Sample studies with discussions about how to interpret them highlight a particular aspect of normalcy or pathology. Imaging correlates are provided to emphasize salient points and offer perspective. The final chapter is an overview of the use of evoked potentials during surgery with imaging and case discussions to introduce the reader to this very important application. Key Features Detailed review of methodology of evoked potential studies Many examples of actual patient studies with imaging correlates Interpretation of each evoked potential study presented in detail “Reading session”-like discussion of each example Special chapter on evoked potentials in the operating room

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evoked potentials are potentials that are derived from the peripheral or central nervous system. They are time locked with an external stimulus and can be influenced by subjective intentions. Evoked potentials have become increasingly popular for clinical diagnosis over the last few years. Evoked potentials from the visual system are used by ophthalmologists in order to localize the abnormalities in the visual pathway. The otologists are mainly involved in brainstem auditory evoked potentials, while the pediatricians, neonatologists, neurologists and clinical neurophysiologists make use of multimodal stimulation. The psychiatrists and psychologists, generally, examine the slow potentials such as P300 and CNV. Anesthesiologists use short latency somatosensory and visual evoked potentials in order to monitor the effectiveness of the anesthesia. Pharmaco evoked potentials are very promising measures for the quan tification of the effectiveness of drug action on the cerebral cortex. Urologists are more and more involved in pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials and in the intensive care unit evoked potentials are used in order to monitor the functional state of the central nervous system of the patient. This overwhelming number of examinations and exam ina tors clearly demonstrates the need for guidelines and standardization of the methods used. The evoked potential metholody is restricted by the relative poor signal to noise ratio. In many diseases this signal to noise ratio decrease rapidly during the progression of the illness. Optimal technical equipment and methodology are therefore essential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty to thirty years the progressivcly increasing availability of averaging machines has made evoked potential testing available not only in the major neurological diagnostic centers but also in the office of many neuro logists in private practice. This rapid devclopment was closely paralleled by clinical research in evoked potentials and the publishing of books covering in detail the basic techniques necessary to obtain evoked potentials and the main clinical applications of evoked potentials. Less work was done, however, to define some of the general principles underlying the recording of evoked potentials or to analyze critically the recording techniques or the actual prac tical value of the information provided by evoked potential testing. In this book an attempt has been made to cover this gap. It is assumed that the reader has a good understanding of basic recording techniques and is familiar with the main applications of clinical evoked potentials. The main emphasis of the first two chapters is to define with more precision some of the physical principles that inftuence the volta ge distribution and are used for defining the generator sources of evoked potentials. This is followed by a critical analysis of recording techniques and of its main clinical applications. Finally there is one chapter that gives an overview on application of evoked potentials for surgical monitoring. This is a rapidly growing field that also has been covered only incomplctcly in previous publications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From August 25 - 28, 1978 a conference on averaged evoked po tentials was held at Konstanz, West Germany. Research on human evoked potentials has progressed rapidly in the past decade, and a series of international conferences have served to maintain com munication between active workers in the field. Among the organiza tions that have a tradition of supporting such mUlti-national com munication are the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Scientific Affairs Division, the u.s. Office of Naval Research and the German Research Society (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). We have been fortunate to have the support of all three. In the early stages of planning, a committee was formed composed of Professors Rudolph Cohen (Konstanz), Otto Creutzfeldt (Goettingen), John Desmedt (Brussels), A.M. Halliday (London), Anthony Remond (Paris) and Herbert Vaughan (New York). A call for papers was circulated as widely as possible, and this committee carried out the difficult task of selecting a limited number of participants from a large number of excellent abstracts. At the same time Professor Cohen of the University of Konstanz was generous enough to shoulder the task of playing host to the conference. His thoughtful arrangements contributed enormously to the comfort of the participants. He and his colleagues also engi neered an ideal ambience for sharing of ideas and observations, while the University of Konstanz generously provided audio-visual support.
