Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, Arkansas, 1949-1950: Volumes 54-55 The Month of January, 1949 in Arkansas was marked by temperatures averaging above normal, and precipitation averaging inches above normal. Only 13 stations in northwest and southwest counties showed negative temperature departures, while all sections of the State showed positive precipitation departures. The weather during January was favorable for the growth of winter grains and cover crops, except in lowlands where floods occurred. There was still considerable cotton in the fields at the first of the month and frequent rains prevented much picking. Straw berries were progressing well at the close of the month. The warm weather during the first two decades of January caused buds to swell, and some apprehension was felt, but colder weather at the end of the month halted development before a critical state was reached. Temperatures were generally above normal throughout the state until about the middle of the month, when a cool wave brought daily means below normal for a few days. There was soon a reaction to warmer weather which continued until about the 27th, when another mass of cold air covered the entire State, bringing below zero readings at Gravette and Devils Knob on the 3oth; and temperatures of 10° or lower to the southern border counties. The warmest weather of the month was around the 9th or loth in most sections, and record or near-record high readings occurred at some stations.
