Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatic Control At the end of 1909 I was asked to contribute to this series a small textbook on the subject of climatic control for use in schools. To deal adequately with so extensive a subject in a small book was, of course, impossible, and I found it necessary to select a certain number of subjects illustrating climatic effects, with the result that the book should be regarded, not so much as a compendium of information, as a guide to help the student to observe and think for himself, since climatic effects are discernible everywhere on the face of the globe and in the life upon it. The first chapter on the principles of climatology should be regarded as introductory to the following six chapters on the subject of climatic control. The special prominence given throughout to the study of the British climate and its effects is due to the book being intended primarily for British scholars, who should carefully observe the climatic and general geographic features of their own country; and this, moreover, is in accordance with my own intimate personal knowledge of the climate of Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatology of Florida The word climate in its common signification indicates a region bounded by certain arbitrary lines, but in medicine it possesses a wider meaning. The effect of climate upon the human system is the sum of. The influences which are connected with many factors. The climate of any locality, professionally speaking, depends upon its temperature, atmospheric vicissitudes, prevailing winds, humidity, its elevation above the sea level, its proximity to the ocean or oceanic currents, its contiguity to mountains, lakes, rivers, arid areas, soil, drainage, vegetable productions, malaria, general sanitation and other factors, which we shall briefly consider. In his investigations, Dr. Jones overlooked Russia, where the Ice King is in all his majesty and strength, or else he would have referred to the following figures In Russia, from 1857 to, .1859, the general mortality from phthisis was! 164 in the In the most northern provinces, that of Archangel, the mortality was 190 in 1,000, 'and in Wologda; 204 per In St. Petersburg it is very common. 1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climates of the Continents A work of this kind must be essentially a compilation from such materials as statistics, more or less adequate, maps showing certain factors of climate, and regional descriptions; the result is largely dependent on the nature of the original sources. A glance at the following pages will show that no uniformity of treatment has been achieved or even attempted. The principle followed has been to present the main features of the climate of each region considered especially in relation to the greater units of the globe. It is' clearly impossible to give any detailed local descriptions in a book of this scope. But it is hoped that the general account may constitute a framework into which detailed local descriptions may be intelligently fitted, a convenient skeleton to carry the details necessary for the special purposes of the meteorologist, the botanist, the zoologist, and the geographer. As it seemed desirable to make each chapter as far as possible complete in itself, repetition has been in some places inevitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Climatic Evolution It follows from what has been said above that the low temperature which undoubtedly prevailed during the Glacial Epoch has not yet received any satisfactory explanation. Each one that has been proposed is either inadequate or is attended by grave difficulties. It is therefore probable that some factor which is essential for the complete solution of the problem is as yet undis covered, or at any rate, the importance of one which is already known has not been duly recognized. (ice Work, Present and Past, p. It is generally admitted, therefore, that no satisfactory Solution is offered for the problem before us, and that the most distinguished scientists who have investigated the subject have no considerable number of followers, that equally distinguished co-workers accept in part only. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer on Climatic Variation and Change A growing fraction of current evidence suggests that the world may be entering a new climate regime. Amid recent expressions of con cern that the Earth may be on the verge of entering a new ice age, a potential serious problem for mankind is perceived. However, this concern has been voiced by many, both within scientific circles, and through the mass media without the qualifications appropriate to any such venture into the realm of the predictability of climate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climate Considered Especially in Relation to Man The preparation of a volume on Climate for The Science Series was suggested to me by the Editors in October, 1904. I was asked to prepare a book "which can be read by an intelligent person who has not had special or extended training in the technicalities of the science, ... the book to be such as would not compete with strictly meteorological text-books, but to handle the broad questions of climate." It so happened that it was then already in my mind to prepare a book dealing with certain large relations of climate, which might serve as supplementary reading for the students in my course on General Climatology in Harvard University. The present volume is an attempt on my part to write a book which shall meet the wishes of the Editors of The Science Series and at the same time fit the needs of my students. Climate is based on lecture-notes which have been accumulating for the past ten years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climate of Australasia in Reference to Its Control by the Southern Ocean This cycle does not offer us any simple direct evidence as to the nature of the forthcoming seasons; for it affects the weather of the continents mainly by causing changes in the circulation of the oceans. Now we know that ocean currents vary from year to year, we can understand how the actual irregularities in the seasons are fully consistent with the obvious oceanic control of the climate of the lands in the southern hemisphere. As these irregularities are caused by processes which take a year or more to run their course, we have the means of watching in one year the evolution of the weather we shall experience in the next. The problems Of long distance weather forecasting may be solved by two methods, each applicable to special areas. In this address I have referred mainly to the influence of the oceanic Circulation, as its effects may be traced directly in the land masses of the southern hemisphere. In the more complex conditions of the northern hemisphere the oceanic control may not be recognised so directly and there seasonal weather changes are necessarily considered in relation to the atmospheric pressure systems, which have been investigated with such interesting results by the American meteorologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climatic Factor as Illustrated in Arid America The present volume is an attempt to determine the sequence and character of such variations on the basis of evidence in the drier portions of America from Guatemala on the south to Idaho on the north. A large number of phenomena from the diverse fields of geology, archeology, history, and botany seem to agree in indicating that during the past years North America has been subject to pronounced climatic pulsations similar to those which appear to have taken place in Asia and other parts of the Old World. In the temperate portions of the Eastern Hemisphere the climate of the past appears on the whole to have been distinctly moister than that of the present. The change from the past to the present, however, does not seem to have been gradual and regular, but pulsatory or cyclic, so that certain periods have been exceptionally dry, while others have been wet. In America the same appears to be true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Arboriculture: How Forests Influence Climate, Control the Winds, Prevent Floods, Sustain National Prosperity a d104 Book for Railway Engineers, Manufacturers, Lumbermen and Farmers Probably no people in the world are more extravagant and wasteful of things which may for the time be abundant. In no case is this more marked than in the disposal of American Forests. Once very abundant, now practically gone in most regions, and soon to be but a memory in the United States. Books have been written and printed at government expense to prove our vast possessions in forests, which have lulled Congress to sleep upon the matter of forest protection, while interested capitalists have obtained possession of all timber land, and are destroying the nation's wealth.
