Download or read book Cleveland and the Civil War written by W. Dennis Keating and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though removed from the frontlines, Cleveland played an active role in national events before, during, and after the Civil War. President Lincoln visited this abolitionist hotbed after his 1860 election. Following his assassination five years later, his funeral train made a stop there. Cleveland and Cuyahoga County sent over 9,000 troops to war. More than 1,700 never returned. Born just outside Cleveland, James Garfield emerged from the war to become President of the United States. Most vitally, the economic prosperity of the war years began the transformation of this small but thriving village into a future manufacturing powerhouse. Author W. Dennis Keating, member and past president of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable, creates a panoramic view of the city through one of the nation's most troubled times.

Book Synopsis Cuyahoga County by : Judith G. Cetina
Download or read book Cuyahoga County written by Judith G. Cetina and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuyahoga County, located on the shores of Lake Erie and the banks of the Cuyahoga, has recently marked its bicentennial, celebrating two centuries of history and achievement. From the county's creation in 1808, to the World War II era and beyond, Cuyahoga County was transformed from a frontier community into a vibrant urban center. Today this part of northeastern Ohio is envied for its distinctive neighborhoods, embrace of various religious creeds, resilient entrepreneurship, ethnically and racially diverse population, political leadership, recreational facilities, splendid cultural and educational institutions, storied sports franchises, and distinguished health facilities. Cuyahoga County government and its citizens are also renowned for their philanthropy and concern for those most vulnerable; championing ideals that ensure everyone an equal place at the table and freedom everywhere. This worldview was rooted in the actions of those who, throughout the centuries, risked their lives and fortunes to attain these goals, giving greater meaning to the area's Underground Railroad code name: HOPE.

Book Synopsis Toronto’s Fighting 75th in the Great War 1915–1919 by : Timothy J. Stewart
Download or read book Toronto’s Fighting 75th in the Great War 1915–1919 written by Timothy J. Stewart and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales Hospital ships filled the harbour of Le Havre as the 75th Mississauga Battalion arrived on 13 August 1916. Those soldiers who survived would spend almost three years in a tiny corner of northeastern France and northwestern Belgium (Flanders), where many of their comrades still lie. And they would serve in many of the most horrific battles of that long, bloody conflict—Saint Eloi, the Somme, Arras, Vimy, Hill 70, Lens, Passchendaele, Amiens, Drocourt-Quéant, Canal du Nord, Cambrai, and Valenciennes. This book tells the story of the 75th Battalion (later the Toronto Scottish Regiment) and the five thousand men who formed it—most from Toronto—from all walks of life. They included professionals, university graduates, white- and blue-collar workers, labourers, and the unemployed, some illiterate. They left a comfortable existence in the prosperous, strongly pro-British provincial capital for life in the trenches of France and Flanders. Tommy Church, mayor of Toronto from 1915 to 1921, sought to include his city’s name in the unit’s name because of the many city officials and local residents who served in it. Three years later Church accepted the 75th’s now heavily emblazoned colours for safekeeping at City Hall from Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Harbottle, who returned with his bloodied but successful survivors. The author pulls no punches in recounting their labours, triumphs, and travails. Timothy J. Stewart undertook exhaustive research for this first-ever history of the 75th, drawing from archival sources (focusing on critical decisions by Brigadier Victor Oldum, General Officer Commanding 11th Brigade), diaries, letters, newspaper accounts, and interviews.

Book Synopsis Rockefeller's Cleveland by : Sharon E. Gregor
Download or read book Rockefeller's Cleveland written by Sharon E. Gregor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John D. Rockefeller arrived in Cleveland in 1853 a boy of 14 and spent six decades in his adopted hometown. With the Standard Oil Company's incorporation in 1870, Rockefeller became the city's most well-known industrialist and, from 1885 to 1917, its foremost summer resident at his Forest Hill estate. Here he raised his children, laid the foundation of a financial and industrial empire, and established a commitment to charitable giving. At the end of the Civil War, Cleveland was a crucible from which would be cast the fortunes of many. None were greater than Rockefeller's. Rockefeller's Cleveland captures the visual panorama of a dynamic city that literally reinvented itself in the 1800s and in doing so emerged a major business and industrial center.
