Book excerpt: Civil War Experiences Revealed by Family Letters A family in the southwestern corner of Hancock County, MS preserved hundreds of letters detailing their privations and fears, as well as the intrigues of the local citizenry. Their perseverance was truly heroic as they survived in spite of the demands of cavalry of both sides, while jayhawkers took what was left. Even as a vigilante committee assumed the duties of law and order in the community, this close-knit family tried to live and work normally, all the while maintaining their honor and integrity.

Book excerpt: Even though Hancock County is only a small corner of a large state, it has a rich history involving pirates, the Civil War, cotton plantations, slavery and Native Americans. This book explores the legends that have been passed down regarding important events and their participants. They have been told and re-told, sometimes with modifications and maybe even embellishment. It has been the task of this author to uncover and explain the truths that are the bases of the stories, and to find and report as much as possible using primary evidence and written history. A reader will find the results of a detailed investigation into the fabled Pirate House of Waveland, Ms. Official Spanish papers document the arrest of slave dealers operating in the Mississippi Sound. Testimony of local citizens reveals the use made of the legendary "tunnel" believed by some to extend "to the islands." The Civil War and its effects on county business and on the lives of citizens are painfully depicted. A Citizens Committee was created to prevent looting and other depredations. In this instance, officials of a Confederate state found it necessary to seek the advice of Union officers for instructions on how to arrest, try, sentence and execute those who were stealing from hard-working families... all through original letters written within a family living in Logtown. In addition, flesh is put on some old bones in the telling of the lives of some of those who built the county ... what they did, where they worked, where they came from. In the process, names will be recognized as those of folk who were of more than local significance, such as JFH Claiborne, Jean Lafitte, Simon Favre, and Andrew Jackson, Jr. In addition, a few unknown characters are revealed and described, people whose stories are worth the telling. Indeed, the personage named Blanque may create new and tantalizing mystery. It is believed by the author that in knowing and understanding of what came before, readers may help themselv

Built with wooden nails and mortise-and-tenon joints and assembled with beams hand-hewn from nearby trees, some of these magnificent structures have witnessed three centuries. Many display the unique carpentry of masterful barn builders, including "mystery" wooden spikes and tongue-and-groove two-inch flooring. Sadly, a number of these barns, neglected for years, risk crumbling any day. Join artist and author Robert Kroeger on a trip to each of Ohio's eighty-eight counties to view some of the state's oldest and most historic barns before they're gone.

Book excerpt: Between 1899 and 1923, Canton native Frank Dick experimented with photography, creating a treasure trove of images that have recently been discovered. He considered himself a "hobbyist," but his photos display a keen eye for composition and technical detail. This companion book to the Keller Gallery exhibition of the same name features Frank's landscapes and floral still lifes, as well as images of his children, automobiles, the McKinley National Memorial, and scenes in and around Canton. The son of Joseph Dick, inventor of the "Blizzard" feed chopper and founder of Dick's Agricultural Works, Frank was born in 1876 into a prosperous family. He worked in the family business, but spent a great deal of time focused on photography. He kept meticulous details about every photo he took, including the subject, date, time, exposure, weather conditions, and "results" of each image. He also made a scrapbook documenting the building of his home at 2203 West Tuscarawas Street. After pledging his home, his stock, and all his assets to try to save his business when the stock market crashed in 1929, Frank lost everything. He and his family, accustomed to the finer things in life, were suddenly plunged into desperation. In 1933 Frank was one of the people who contacted Sam Stone, the anonymous "B. Virdot" who placed an ad in the Repository asking people to write to him and explain their financial troubles, and he would send them $5 in time for Christmas. Frank's and many other stories are chronicled in the book A Secret Gift, written by Sam Stone's grandson Ted Gup.In addition to his amazing photographs, this book contains images of Dick's Agricultural Works; Frank's drawings, plans, and patents for mechanical toys; and his heartfelt letter to B. Virdot in its entirety. Frank never fully recovered from his losses during the Depression, but his legacy lives on through his remarkable photography.

Book excerpt: Controversial, misunderstood, and sometimes overlooked, Minor White (1908–1976) is one of the great photographers of the twentieth century, whose ideas exerted a powerful influence on a generation of photographers and still resonate today. His photographic career began in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, with assignments for the WPA (Works Progress Administration). After serving in World War II and studying art history at Columbia University, White’s focus shifted toward the metaphorical. He began creating images charged with symbolism and a critical aspect called equivalency, referring to the invisible spiritual energy present in a photograph made visible to the viewer. This book brings together White’s key biographical information—his evolution as a photographer, teacher of photography, and editor of Aperture, as well as particularly insightful quotations from his journals, which he kept for more than forty years. The result is an engaging narrative that weaves through the main threads of White’s life, his growth as an artist, as well as his spiritual search and ongoing struggle with his own sexuality and self-doubt. He sought comfort in a variety of religious practices that influenced his continually metamorphosing artistic philosophy. Complemented with a rich selection of more than 160 images including some never published before, the book accompanies the first major exhibition of White’s work since 1989, on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from July 8 to October 19, 2014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace the development of a pioneering college of pharmacy! This fascinating book recounts the history of the first college of pharmacy west of the Alleghenies. Pharmaceutical Education in the Queen City tells the tale from its beginnings as the Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in 1850 to its status as a college of the University of Cincinnati and into the twenty-first century. Through the specific history of the school, its founders, and its dedicated faculty and students, the remarkable progress of pharmacy as a profession is mirrored here. In the mid-nineteenth century, most aspiring pharmacists in the United States had to apprentice themselves to practicing druggists. Though a formal school had already been established in Philadelphia, followed by schools in the other large eastern cities, young men in the West who wanted to learn the profession faced great difficulties. Few pharmacists had any formal training in chemistry, anatomy, or other sciences, and they could not teach what they did not themselves know. Pharmaceutical Education in the Queen City discusses the fascinating facts of pharmacy history, including: the influence of German settlers on pharmacy standards the reasons nineteenth-century women faced less opposition in becoming pharmacists than in becoming doctors how admissions standards changed as high school diplomas and college degrees became more widespread how colleges of pharmacy met the emergency demands of World War I and World War II the effects of high technology on pharmacy education Pharmaceutical Education in the Queen City offers a fresh look at the history of pharmacy education in the United States as well as in Cincinnati. Well researched and entertainingly written, this book will help you appreciate the rapid changes in the profession of pharmacy.
