In this helpful book for clergy, Charles Rassieur provides some clear and practical answers. Pastors will find in this book a plan for short-term counseling with married couples that gives the pastor a quick plan to put in place at the first signs of marital trouble. Because the plan for short-term counseling is simple, straightforward, and focused, it allows both the pastor and the married couple to concentrate on the problems with confidence. Rassieur presents a detailed outline for short-term counseling that focuses on the issues that are at the core of most troubled marriages, so that within just a few sessions the pastor will be ready to recommend next steps, which may include a longer-term plan for counseling. The book contains step-by-step plans for short-term counseling, copies of a covenant for pastoral marriage counseling, and questionnaires for use in analyzing marital situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminization is said to occur when women enter any given occupation in substantial numbers, and ostensibly leads to such dynamics as sex-segregation, reduced opportunities for men, and depressed wages and diminished prestige for the occupation as a whole. Spanning more than 70 years, Paula Nesbitt's study of feminization concentrates on the Episcopal Church and the Unitarian Universalist Association, utilizing both statistical results and interviews to compare occupational patterns prior and subsequent to the large influx of women clergy. Among her findings, the author discovers that a decline in men's opportunities is evident before the 1970s, preceding the great influx of women over the last two decades. She also finds that increases in the number of women ordained reduced occupational prospects for other women, but enhanced those for men, thus contradicting the popular myth that women in the workplace are responsible for occupational decline.

Book excerpt: "This research will explore factors that impact a pastor’s ability and willingness to engage in self-care strategies. It is my observation, through research and conversation, that African American pastors are less likely to engage in self-care strategies, seek mental health counseling, or engage in activities sponsored by evangelical leadership initiatives. In an effort to reduce the risk of attrition from ministry, Clergy Couple Care is a culturally sensitive, multi-couple retreat model, offered to equip new and seasoned clergy couples with education regarding the: 1) impact of trauma in ministry, 2) implementation of self-care strategies, 3) importance of healthy effective communication skills, and 4) inclusion of couple relationship enhancement interventions." -- Leaf [2].

Book excerpt: This collection of true stories is written by Mihee Kim-Kort and Andy Kort, a married clergy couple who met while they were in seminary. They share their unique perspective on the joys and challenges of ministry in alternating segments, forming a collective narrative that illuminates the inner workings of a clergy marriage, even as it inspires with heartfelt tales of life in ministry. Throughout the book Mihee and Andy relate their respective impressions of shared experiences, revealing inherent differences and potential sources of conflict, but also demonstrating how they work through their differences, communicate, and collaborate to make the most of their strengths. With 20 years of ministry experience between them, a blue Subaru Outback crammed full of child car seats, an old dog named Ellis, and life experience in three states, Andy and Mihee have struggled with infertility, survived the threat of foreclosure, travelled abroad and led mission trips together, and through it all remain yoked together. This tale of endurance is only made possible by hard work, sympathetic friends, endless conversations, countless cups of coffee and bottles of beer, and the grace of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like a finely crafted ornament, freshly made, the cracks begin to appear. No matter how carefully constructed, outside stressors can cause irrevocable damage to the craftman’s beautiful masterpiece. The same can be said about marriage. What God ordained as very good can grow through life and become beaten down and tattered by life’s stormy sea. And life is no respecter of marriage…it could be the marriage of your pastor and their spouse that finds itself struggling. Clergy Couples discovers what every marriage should be a wonderful gift of God. Yet with the seemingly competing call of ministry that some clergy marriages sense, that dream becomes difficult to hold onto. Author Jerry Dooley delves into this dire notion of competing vows: marriage and ministry. It addresses what God intended marriage to be and then looks at clergy marriage in particular, from historical and contemporary perspectives. Common day stresses of the call to ministry takes its toll on ministry, but there’s hope. It’s called the church—the community of believers. You, the people of God! You can become a healing balm to those who are called to serve. You are the ones who nurse your clergy couples back to health and provide them with a safe place to grow!

Book excerpt: Child-molesting priests, embezzled church treasures, philandering ministers and rabbis, even church-endorsed pyramid schemes that defraud gullible parishioners of millions of dollars: for the past decade, clergy misconduct has seemed continually to be in the news. Is there something about religious organizations that fosters such misbehavior? Bad Pastors presents a range of new perspectives and solidly grounded data on pastoral abuse, investigating sexual misconduct, financial improprieties, and political and personal abuse of authority. Rather than focusing on individuals who misbehave, the volume investigates whether the foundation for clergy malfeasance is inherent in religious organizations themselves, stemming from hierarchies of power in which trusted leaders have the ability to define reality, control behavior, and even offer or withhold the promise of immortality. Arguing that such phenomena arise out of organizational structures, the contributors do not focus on one particular religion, but rather treat these incidents from an interfaith perspective. Bad Pastors moves beyond individual case studies to consider a broad range of issues surrounding clergy misconduct, from violence against women to the role of charisma and abuse of power in new religious movements. Highlighting similarities between other forms of abuse, such as domestic violence, the volume helps us to conceptualize and understand clergy misconduct in new ways.
