Book Synopsis Clean Food for Cancer by : Tamaryn Sutherns
Download or read book Clean Food for Cancer written by Tamaryn Sutherns and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Organization estimates that of the 6 million cancer cases diagnosed worldwide each year, 3 million are the result of poor diet. Having watched loved ones succumb to cancer, Clean Food for Cancer is Tamaryn Sutherns’ attempt to give cancer patients and their families the opportunity to look at some ideas and theories on nutrition and diet so they can make up their own minds about what works for them. Thorough research and expert advice from scientists, oncologists, dieticians and psychologists are interspersed with personal stories from cancer patients and their families, many of whom had to sift through masses of information on Google before they came up with personal solutions. Their experiences highlight the need for such a resource in today’s world of information overload and often conflicting advice. After an overview of cancer, its types and causes, the book introduces readers to ‘clean’ eating, from the more moderate approaches of eating a balanced diet and avoiding preservatives, hormones and other harmful toxins (going ‘organic’), to the more extreme approaches of vegetarianism and veganism. One chapter covers the controversy surrounding red meat, providing research and fi ndings from both sides of the pasture, and another to the fairly new concept, for South Africans at least, of raw food. The book also touches on various alternative holistic therapies, such as Ayurveda and Reiki as supplements for the more traditional treatments of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. The author is not out to provide a cure or an alternative to medical treatment, but rather to encourage patients, or anyone at risk of cancer, to adopt a diet that promotes good health and that might assist the treatment and recovery processes.

Book Synopsis Diet and Breast Cancer by : American Institute for Cancer Research
Download or read book Diet and Breast Cancer written by American Institute for Cancer Research and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth annual American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) conference on diet, nutrition and cancer was held at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D. C. , September 2~3, 1993. In keeping with present concerns and in line with current trends, the theme was "Diet and Breast Cancer. " This proceedings volume is comprised of chapters from the platform presentations of the two day conference and abstracts from the poster session held at the end of the first day. Experimentally, there is sufficient evidence to support a relationship between dietary fat and the risk of breast cancer. A meta-analysis was provided by data from 114 experiments with over 10,000 animals, divided into groups fed ad libitum on diets with different levels or sources of fat, or different levels of energy restriction. This exercise suggested that linoleic acid was a major determinant of mammary tumor development but that other fatty acids also enhanced mammary tumor development in animals. However, as mentioned by several speakers, results from epidemiological studies often are conflicting, thus leading to confusion among both health professionals and the public. Surveys of specific populations which have migrated from countries with low breast cancer rates to those with higher rates are often some of the most compelling studies with respect to a high fat diet-breast cancer association. Nonetheless, various cohort and prospective studies, some quite large, did not appear to show a relationship between consumption of fat (any type) and breast cancer.

Book Synopsis Diet and Fighting Bladder Cancer by : Maurice Zeegers
Download or read book Diet and Fighting Bladder Cancer written by Maurice Zeegers and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is partly based on research funded by Wereld Kanker Onderzoek Fonds based in the Netherlands and administered by the World Cancer Research Fund International grant program. Every year half a million of people worldwide are diagnosed with bladder cancer. With the recent zeitgeist of the self-empowered, intelligent patient who wishes to be well-informed, many cancer patients do not solely want to rely on decisions taken by medical practitioners, but actively participate in the journey from sickness to health or disease. While no books about the relationship between diet and bladder cancer currently exist, the poor quality of the existing information about the relationship between diet and health is shocking. Much of the information is exaggerated, not evidence-based, misleading and sometimes even incorrect. Dr. Maurice Zeegers, one of the world leading bladder cancer epidemiologists, and his co-authors set the record straight with this book on Diet and Fighting Bladder Cancer. Their aim is to provide purely evidence-based information about the relationship between diet and bladder cancer. The primary audience is bladder cancer patients who wish to be well-informed, although clinicians and healthcare workers may also find the book an interesting read. The book gives an honest reflection on what scientists know, but also what they don’t yet know about how diet contributes to all stages of this important disease. Although science-based, the book is written in an easy-to-read format, illustrated with practical recipes. Presents purely evidence-based information about the relationship between diet and bladder cancer Provides patients, clinicians and healthcare workers with trusty and up-to-date scientific information Written by one of the world leading bladder cancer epidemiologists Explained in an easy-to-read format, accessible to not only specialists but non-specialists as well Illustrated with tasty and practical recipes
Book Synopsis Cook For Your Life by : Ann Ogden Gaffney
Download or read book Cook For Your Life written by Ann Ogden Gaffney and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2016 James Beard Award nominee and 2016 Books For A Better Life Award winner A beautiful, unique cookbook with delicious recipes for all stages of cancer treatment and recovery, from a two-time cancer survivor and founder of the Cook for Your Life nutrition-based cooking programs. Cook for Your Life is a one-of-a-kind cookbook for those whose lives are touched by cancer, organized by the patient’s needs. Self-taught home cook and two-time cancer survivor Ann Ogden Gaffney discovered during her months of treatment for breast cancer that she was able to find powerful relief for her symptoms through cooking. Realizing that other patients and families could benefit from the skills and techniques she’d learned, she began to offer advice, recipes, and free classes to fellow patients. A former fashion consultant, Gaffney realized after her treatment that her heart was no longer in seasonal colors and hemline trends. Instead, she wanted to help people with cancer and their families cook and care for themselves. In 2007,the nonprofit organization Cook for Your Life was born. Its programs have received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and have been embraced by organizations such as Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, Mount Sinai Health System, Atlantic Health System Cancer Care, the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in New York City, and more. Cook for Your Life has touched hundreds of thousands of lives. Now Gaffney delivers her very first highly anticipated cookbook, based on Cook for Your Life’s classes. So many cancer cookbooks are too complicated to follow for someone going through the treatment, or too clinical and uninspired to encourage anyone with compromised taste buds to enjoy. This is the first cookbook to organize the recipes into categories according to the way patients feel and their needs in the moment—for example, “Simple” recipes when the patient is fatigued, “Safe” recipes when a patient’s immune system is compromised, and “Spicy” recipes when a patient is feeling better and needs to wake up her taste buds. With its warmth, authority, beautiful design, and smartly conceived format, Cook for Your Life empowers patients and families to cook their way back to health.

The first part of the book presents the most recent research on the impact of physical activity in preventing a range of cancers. In addition, the determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors are discussed, and behavior change strategies for increasing physical activity in cancer survivors are appraised. The final part of the book is devoted to special topics, including the relation of physical activity to pediatric cancer survivorship and to palliative cancer care.
