The Shearer Method: Classic Guitar Foundations, Shearer's final work, is the first in a series that encapsulates his lifetime experience as America's premier classic guitar pedagogue. This work is a step-by-step curriculum based on Aaron's innovative and common sense approach that incorporates all the advantages of modern technology. The method includes 63 DVD videos for up-close aural and visual learning, 74 new solo and duet compositions and arrangements (made exclusively for this method by Dr. Alan Hirsh), as well as works by Sor, Carcassi, Giuliani, and more. Plus, recorded tracks masterfully illustrate nuance, tone, and musicality. The book even includes Alfred Music's exclusive TNT 2 software that allows you to slow down and loop tracks for careful practice. In addition, a complete online supplement is available for teachers and students that want a deeper understanding of Shearer's work. The book does not replace Shearer's original classic. It augments and expands on it in ways not imaginable in the early '60s when the original was published. Book excerpt: The purpose of these arrangements is to provide a variety of interesting and challenging material for Suzuki guitar students who are beyond Book 1 and are playing in a Suzuki guitar group class. The arrangements allow students, who may be widely divergent in playing levels, the opportunity to perform together in the Book 1 repertoire. These arrangements include the original melodies transposed one octave higher, giving the student practice in reading ledger lines and playing beyond the 12th fret, a obbligato melody that poses technical challenges to advanced students, a simple chordal accompaniment that gives the Book 2 student excellent free stroke arpeggio practice, and a bass part that gives the student practice in reading the lower ledger lines. These parts work well together, but can also be used with the original melodies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over twenty years of my professional life, I have taught guitar at all levels from introductory to postgraduate. When I was first asked to teach in the Grades 5-8 School Guitar Program, I was both excited at the prospect and apprehensive about the challenges ahead. I had never taught in such environment before, and I wondered how my knowledge of the guitar world would resonate with large groups of children. The first year turned out to be a string of mini-disasters, at least from my point of view.Obviously, I needed to change something and, upon reflection, decided to change my Guitar Class to a Guitar Orchestra. In a guitar ensemble, it is less important how difficult the notes are and much more important how different notes are performed together. Once I adopted and implemented this principle, my Guitar Orchestra started sounding much better from the very first note. Instead of playing the same notes together, students started playing in four voice harmony. This approach created more interest and, of course, more attention among students. That initial success was also the starting point of this book.

Book excerpt: Vocal, Instrumental, and Ensemble Learning and Teaching is one of five paperback books derived from the foundational two-volume Oxford Handbook of Music Education. Designed for music teachers, students, and scholars of music education, as well as educational administrators and policy makers, this third volume in the set emphasizes the types of active musical attributes that are acquired when learning an instrument or to sing, together with how these skills can be used when engaging musically with others. These chapters shed light on how the field of voice instruction has changed dramatically in recent decades and how physiological, acoustical, biomechanical, neuromuscular, and psychological evidence is helping musicians and educators question traditional practices. The authors discuss research on instrumental learning, demonstrating that there is no 'ideal' way to learn, but rather that a chosen learning approach must be appropriate for the context and desired aims. This volume rounds out with a focus on a wide range of perspectives dealing with group performance of instrumental music, an area that is organized and taught in many varied ways internationally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working on a musical is exciting for students, teachers, and the entire middle school community! As the first musical theater book especially for middle school productions, The Magic of Middle School Musicals provides a step-by-step guide for success. Bobetsky approaches planning and producing musicals in the context of a curricular unit of study and includes strategies for assessing student learning. Dr. Victor V. Bobetsky, a former New York City middle school music teacher, begins with advice on how to select a musical, obtain copyright permission, and arrange the music for middle school voices. He discusses strategies for teaching the music in the choral classroom, auditioning, casting, and rehearsal procedures. Practical suggestions show directors how to work with student actors, create choreography, and manage scenery, set design, costumes, lighting, and more. The Magic of Middle School Musicals gives music teachers the information and confidence they need to artistically adapt musicals from the American repertoire to the middle school level so that teachers, students, and audiences can experience and enjoy this unique, familiar, and musically expressive genre!
