Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of sixteen literary and historical essays, Peter Green informs, entertains, and stimulates. He covers a wide range of subjects, from Greek attitudes toward death to the mysteries of the Delphic Oracle, from Tutankhamun and the gold of Egypt to sex in ancient literature, from the island of Lesbos (where he once lived) to the challenges of translating Ovid's wit and elegant eroticism into present-day English verse, from Victorian pederastic aesthetics to Marxism's losing battle with ancient history. This third volume of Green's essays (several previously unpublished) reveals throughout his serious concern that we are, in a very real sense, losing the legacy of antiquity through the corrosive methodologies of modern academic criticism. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1998. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elaborate and inventive slaughter of humans and animals in the arena fed an insatiable desire for violent spectacle among the Roman people. Donald G. Kyle combines the words of ancient authors with current scholarly research and cross-cultural perspectives, as he explores * the origins and historical development of the games * who the victims were and why they were chosen * how the Romans disposed of the thousands of resulting corpses * the complex religious and ritual aspects of institutionalised violence * the particularly savage treatment given to defiant Christians. This lively and original work provides compelling, sometimes controversial, perspectives on the bloody entertainments of ancient Rome, which continue to fascinate us to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire presents a study of third century Rome, which is lavishly illustrated and a lucid read, typical of Michael Grant's inimitable style. In Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire, Michael Grant asserts that the fact that the Roman empire of the third century AD did not collapse is one of the miracles of history. He argues that at that time the empire seemed ripe for disintegration and expresses amazement that it continued, in the west, for another two hundred years, and in the east, for far longer. Michael Grant examines the reasons for collapse, including analyses of the succession of emperors, the Germans and the Persians and also, the reasons for its remarkable recovery, including discussions of strong emperors, a reconstituted army, finance and coinage and state religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Fairfax, not Oliver Cromwell, was creator and commander of Parliament's New Model Army from 1645 to1650. Although Fairfax emerged as England's most successful commander of the 1640s, this book challenges the orthodoxy that he was purely a military figure, showing how he was not apolitical or disinterested in politics. The book combines narrative and thematic approaches to explore the wider issues of popular allegiance, puritan religion, concepts of honour, image, reputation, memory, gender, literature, and Fairfax's relationship with Cromwell. 'Black Tom' delivers a groundbreaking examination of the transformative experience of the English revolution from the viewpoint of one of its leading, yet most neglected, participants. It is the first modern academic study of Fairfax, making it essential reading for university students as well as historians of the seventeenth century. Its accessible style will appeal to a wider audience of those interested in the civil wars and interregnum more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The high speed of development within the still young sector wind energy leads to new challenges in the field of wind turbine (WT) drive trains. Regarding little long term experience with current WT power levels, developments in the range of control, design and test procedures must be furthered and new test facilities have to be made accessible to ensure and increase reliability of WT. To present the state of the art and innovations in the field of wind turbine generator drive trains and pitch-/ yaw-systems the second Conference for Wind Power Drives (CWD) will be taking place on 3rd and 4th of March 2015 in Eurogress Aachen. The CWD is designed as an interdisciplinary platform for knowledge and technology transfer between developers, research scientists and operators. Furthermore, the conference promotes exchange between industry and academia in the field of wind turbine drive trains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bearings (both plain and rolling element) are used as important supporting elements for locating rotating components and confining their motion in desired direction. In order to ensure their operational reliability and desired life, these need to be properly designed/selected for an application more so because of ever increasing operational speeds. This requires the careful performance evaluation of different types of bearings considering aspects such as thermal stability, lubrication, contaminants in lubricants and controlling mechanism etc. The title of this book was specifically chosen as Performance Evaluation of Bearings. The present book is a compilation of different aspects contributing towards the performance evaluation of plain bearings (both journal and thrust), rolling element bearings and magnetic bearings.
