A dynamic environment including regulatory changes and notable criminal incidents has resulted in rapid changes in campus policy in the United States. Limited research has been conducted regarding stakeholder perceptions of campus safety, though research is lacking regarding campus safety in Christian higher education. Research is especially lacking among Christian institutions in the southeastern United States and in comparing student perceptions based on class standing. This causal-comparative study examined the results of a survey presented to undergraduate students at a Christian university to answer the question as to whether there are differences in student perceptions of campus safety based on class standing and gender. The adapted Perceptions of College Safety and Security scale was sent to undergraduate students at a suburban Christian university in upstate South Carolina. The survey results were compared via ANOVA based on class standing and again based on gender. The instrument as a whole showed no significant difference between students based on either gender or class standing, leading to a failure to reject the null hypothesis. Individual questions did show significant differences, leading to further discussion and recommendations for future research. Opportunities for future research including comparing student differences in perceptions of campus safety by comparing differences between students attending various Christian institutions in a variety of setting, comparisons of perceptions based on hometown or geographic region, perceptions of students during the college decision-making process, longitudinal studies, and comparisons of perceptions between different types of stakeholders (e.g. parents and students).

Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Students have been concerned about their safety on campuses because of the crime and violence that have been occurring on college grounds and in surrounding areas. Some of these crimes include the following: rape, robbery, burglary, dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, and gun violence. Some examples of tragedies that have occurred on college grounds include the Virginia Tech tragedy and the rape of Jeanne Clery at Lehigh University. Lawmakers showed their concern of campus safety by creating and enforcing the Jeanne Clery Act. This research employed the use of a survey and face-to-face semi-structured interviews to determine East Carolina University students' perceptions of safety in campus in relation to crime and violence. The classes where the survey was distributed include ART 1910-Art Appreciation and ITEC 3292-Industrial Safety. The objective of this research work was to identify campus safety issues that were of concern to ECU students as well as students' perceptions of campus security services vis a vis the impact of its presence in the campus. It was understood from the results that students generally believe that ECU is a safe campus. Also, the survey and interview results show that few students use the campus security services. The results also show that females view the campus as less safe when compared to males. Freshmen view the campus as less safe when compared to upperclassmen.

Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to delve into, and further understand, the perceptions of higher education administrators when they experience having to simultaneously balance the issues of campus safety and student privacy. The research surveyed approximately 900 (with 147 returns) administrators who self-identified as having a role in incidents of campus crises on their respective campuses. The survey was the starting-point for gathering baseline data that was used to further understand the experiences of the administrators. Following up on the data provided in the survey, qualitative interviews with volunteer administrators helped to expand the limited available research by providing the perspective of the administrator, a perspective that has gone under examined. The data allowed the researcher to build a composite of information that illustrates and describes the perceptions and experiences of administrators as they maneuver their way through moments of crisis. The research provides colleges and universities insight into the perceptions of administrators and the stress of their respective roles. It brings students' perspectives forward to describe how they are experiencing school policies and procedures, programs, and practices regarding their safety. The incidence of criminal activity in school has been on the increase and there have been major incidents that have received media coverage. The carnage has had an effect on our society and led families, schools and education authorities, and the government to seek improvement in school security measures. While most of the research on school safety focuses on the viewpoint of safety experts, police officers, school and district officials, and parents, little research describes student perceptions of school safety programs. The purpose of this research is to provide a context in which students describe what makes a school safe as well as the ways they perceive the effectiveness of school safety programs. First the study determined the school safety programs in use through a survey of 65 students. Next, students' and faculty perceptions of school safety programs and their experiences and feelings regarding their safety at school were collected from interviewing ten students and ten faculty members. Finally, the procedures and practices that were part of the school's safety programs were evaluated for their effectiveness. The themes that emerged from the data included: (a) students had developed two safety strategies to deal with threats at school and in their community that were not known by faculty, (b) the common attribute of successful programs was collaborative communication with the adults, (c) social constructions that led to the perceptions of school safety programs and their implementation were influenced by prior personal schooling experiences, (d) top down legislative policy implementations were not identified as successful by students. This study's findings suggest that schools should be empowered to develop their own safety plans. Funding for schools should be based upon their unique community needs. School safety plans should be created collaboratively and involve students and faculty. This would eliminate the misalignment of school safety programs that do not meet the needs of students and faculty.

Comparisons between Red Bank High School and three other high schools provided the data concerning areas of safety in the schools, weapons, school resource officer, technology, dress code, and overall safety. A perception analysis was done for the freshman class of 2001 and sophomore class of 2002 regarding safety issues. Both qualitative and quantitative methods provided data which was then examined. A summary of results, conclusions, recommendations, limitations, and implications were included.

Book excerpt: "To increase school safety, many schools are implementing school resource officer programs (SROs). SROs are officers trained to work in schools with the goal of preventing crime (McDevitt & Panniello, 2005). Whereas some studies have found that SROs improve students' perceptions of safety (McDevitt & Panniello, 2005), others have found that SROs do not have an impact on students' perceptions of safety (Bracy, 2011). Better understanding students' perceptions of safety is critical, as it can impact student learning and the realized safety of the school (Welsh, 2000). The current study examined high school students' perceptions of safety in a high school with an SRO. Twenty-seven ninth and tenth grade students from Metea Valley High School completed a self-devised survey about the impact of the SRO on perceptions of school and personal safety. It was hypothesized that the students would perceive the SRO as promoting school and personal safety. Results indicated that while the students believed the SRO kept the school safe, it did not impact their perceptions of personal safety. The SRO program appears to have a positive impact on school safety overall but could benefit from clarifying its role and goals with students."--Abstract

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore areas of research in regards to how students learn about violent crime on university campuses and what level of awareness they hold regarding their personal safety. A combination of databases was used to measure reported rates of violent crime on campus and in the community and these were compared with students' self-perceptions of safety and personal exposure to violence through an online survey distributed to 7,000 students at eight diverse universities throughout the United States. The survey determined that students were more aware of their personal safety than most researchers were giving them credit for. The students were largely dependent upon and trusting in their university to provide them with the information they needed to keep them safe. The university's internal and external communications messages (emails and news media coverage) were a large factor in determining how safe a student felt. Overall, there were few differences in perceptions of safety from demographics (except year of schooling). There was however strong consistencies in perceptions of universities per university, suggesting that the university itself is actually the greatest factor determining students' self-perceptions of safety and that the university's safety perception was largely determined by media coverage. The university proved such a strong factor that it even outweighed a students' personal experience with violence as a key factor in how safe a student felt. I believe that this exploratory study now indicates that future research in the field should focus on universities' safety images and whether or not this is making students feel safe or unsafe.
