Book Synopsis Wooster High School Class of 1965 50th Reunion by : Patricia Melton

This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We came by car, by plane, by bicycle. Perhaps someone took a bus or a train. We gathered for two evenings at the Atlantis, which didn't exist when we were in school. Some of us visited Wooster and some of us had breakfast and lunches with old friends we hadn't seen in years. We are real estate agents and teachers, nurses and artists, ranchers, lawyers, chiropractors, golfers, computer analysts and programmers, engineers and bridge masters. We served in the military and as firefighters and police. One of us became mayor of Lovelock and one became chair of the Tribal Council for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. Others have worked in state, local and federal agencies. Some of us have come to every reunion; some have come to none, and for one of us, the fiftieth was the first time. Some of us left Reno as soon as we could; some of us have come back; some have lived in Nevada's mountains and valleys all our lives. All of us were members of the first class to go through all three years of high school at Wooster, graduating in 1965.

Book excerpt: In the midst of racial strife, one young man showed courage and empathy. It took forty years for the others to join him Being a student at Americus High School was the worst experience of Greg Wittkamper's life. Greg came from a nearby Christian commune, Koinonia, whose members devoutly and publicly supported racial equality. When he refused to insult and attack his school's first black students in 1964, Greg was mistreated as badly as they were: harassed and bullied and beaten. In the summer after his senior year, as racial strife in Americus -- and the nation -- reached its peak, Greg left Georgia. Forty-one years later, a dozen former classmates wrote letters to Greg, asking his forgiveness and inviting him to return for a class reunion. Their words opened a vein of painful memory and unresolved emotion, and set him on a journey that would prove healing and saddening. The Class of '65 is more than a heartbreaking story from the segregated South. It is also about four of Greg's classmates -- David Morgan, Joseph Logan, Deanie Dudley, and Celia Harvey -- who came to reconsider the attitudes they grew up with. How did they change? Why, half a lifetime later, did reaching out to the most despised boy in school matter to them? This noble book reminds us that while ordinary people may acquiesce to oppression, we all have the capacity to alter our outlook and redeem ourselves.

Book Synopsis The Bellarmine Feint by : Tom Czerwinski
Download or read book The Bellarmine Feint written by Tom Czerwinski and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellarmine Feint is an intellectual thriller reminiscent of the late Michael Crichton’s wrapping an adventure around a scientific core. The underlying theme is that the pursuit of progress and prosperity through constant innovation and novelty is threatened by the limits discovered in the new science of complexity theory. It turns out that moderation is not just an ethical or pragmatic consideration, but a scientific necessity. The Vatican, bent on restoring the importance of tradition and order, devises a plan to use this discovery to both preserve its existence, and to curb the conduct of the modern secular state. In order to test this strategy, Dr. Alan Voldt, an unaware player, is sent to Turkey in 2018 to finalize an inter-university exchange agreement. Voldt is an unlikely candidate to be a lay numerary of the Vatican’s Order of Opus Dei. The former Youngstown State tight end and Marine platoon leader is a controversial authority on the rise and fall of civilizations. Although a committed Catholic, he follows in the footsteps of St. Augustine, who until well into his thirties had prayed, “Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet.” At 41, Voldt has still not turned that corner. Turkey’s controversial entry to the European Union gets tangled up with the Vatican strategy through Voldt’s furtive affair with Sila Gyor, a prominent Turkish TV anchor. Her views on Turkey’s future reflect a yearning for Ottoman past glory. This conflicts with a family tradition loyal to the Ataturk European-oriented vision. The ensuing contention over her son’s allegiance leads to tragic consequences. Inexorably, Turkey’s MiT and America’s CIA are drawn into the plot, because interpretations of the Vatican strategy assume conspiratorial dimensions. In parallel, a Canadian-based Russian oligarch, Maksim Ioshchenkov, also has an interest in Voldt for his access to human terrain analysis--the mapping of tribal, clan, family and clique dynamics underlying formal social structures. This knowledge is essential to his ambition to reopen oil and gas fields in the volatile northern Afghan province of Jozwan. The matter disturbs Voldt. Having been wounded in Afghanistan, the prospect of returning threatens to release his repressed PTSD nightmares. Despite his best efforts he is unable to avoid facing his demons. Keywords: Complexity, Moderation, Adventure, Chaos, Turkey, Opus Dei, Nonlinearity, Afghanistan, CIA, Danube
Book Synopsis The Boys of St. Joe's '65 in the Vietnam War by : Dennis G. Pregent
Download or read book The Boys of St. Joe's '65 in the Vietnam War written by Dennis G. Pregent and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven high school friends in idyllic North Adams, Massachusetts, enlisted to serve in Vietnam, and one stayed behind to protest the war. All were from patriotic, working-class families, all members of the class of 1965 at Saint Joseph's School. Dennis Pregent was one of them. He and his classmates joined up--most right out of school, some before graduating--and endured the war's most vicious years. Seven served in the Army, three in the Marine Corps, and one in the Navy. After fighting in a faraway place, they saw the trajectories of their lives dramatically altered. One died in combat, another became paralyzed, and several still suffer from debilitating conditions five decades later. Inspired by his 50th high school reunion, Pregent located his classmates, rekindled friendships, and--together, over hours of interviews--they remembered the war years.

Book Synopsis Communal Solidarity by : Arthur Ross
Download or read book Communal Solidarity written by Arthur Ross and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1882 and 1930 approximately 9,800 Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe settled in Winnipeg. Newly arrived Jewish immigrants began to establish secular mutual aid societies, organizations based on egalitarian principles of communal solidarity that dealt with the pervasive problem of economic insecurity by providing financial relief to their members. The organization of mutual aid societies accelerated the development of a vibrant secular public sphere in Winnipeg’s Jewish community in which decisions about the provision of social welfare were decided democratically based on the authority and participation of the people. Communal Solidarity: Immigration, Settlement, and Social Welfare in Winnipeg’s Jewish Community, 1882–1930 looks at the development of Winnipeg’s Jewish community and the network of institutions and organizations they established to provide income assistance, health care, institutional care for children and the elderly, and immigrant aid to reunite families. Communal solidarity enabled the Jewish community to establish and sustain a system of social welfare that assisted thousands of immigrants to adjust to an often inhospitable city and build new lives in Canada. Arthur Ross’s study of the formation of Winnipeg’s Jewish community is not only the first history of the societies, institutions, and organizations Jewish immigrants created, it reveals how communal solidarity shaped their understanding of community life and the way decisions should be made about their collective future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "23 Things I Wish I Could Ask..." isn't your ordinary self-help or spiritual book for grief and loss. A book of questions -- one question in quiet reflection on each page, It's more like a walk of discovery in a beautiful art exhibit, each piece of art asking you a different question. If you like or have thought about dipping your toe into philosophy, meditation, Stoicism and poetic readings in little bites to easily absorb....this book is a welcome, comforting read to open you up, make you feel what you needed to feel, ultimately joyful about moving your own life forward. If you've ever found yourself thinking about a loved one you've lost ... or about someone still alive but not around in your life, and wishing you could talk to them...ask them just one more question keeping you up at night and rushing into your thoughts during the day....this book is something to hold in your hands, by your night table or favorite quiet place with your morning or afternoon coffee or tea. "23 Things..." is a book of questions -- all questions -- the author wrote to open himself up and move his life forward.Mourning and grieving can be, after a point, destructive. Unanswered questions can be haunting. The author, Jan Zlotnick, found himself, before and during the pandemic, asking questions out loud to his parents, who died many years prior. He found that putting the questions in writing and reflecting on them was as much about listening to himself as listening for answers from his loved ones. It also made him think of the questions his own children and friends and family might have for him today. After the last page, where Jan recalls his most cherished question as a child in the dark...there is even a way to ask your own question to Jan.
