Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide that explains how we can design roads that are compatible with populations of small wildlife. Few of us think twice about driving on roads. Yet the very presence of roads and the act of driving on them can impact the ecological infrastructure that supports an animal's daily life. What chance does a turtle have of successfully laying its eggs when it needs to traverse a busy highway? Is it realistic to expect small mammals to breed when an interstate thoroughfare subdivides their population? These are the sorts of challenges faced by small, often slow-moving, animals, challenges that road engineers and ecologists are trying to address. For countless small species, vehicles traveling at high speeds are nothing less than missiles shooting across migration pathways. For too many animals, the danger can lead to the loss of populations, in part because they simply are not programmed to react to traffic. Salamanders faced with a two-lane road between the forest and their aquatic breeding site, for example, will typically cross that road regardless of the congestion. The result can be hundreds of flattened animals in a single night. Roads and Ecological Infrastructure is the first book to focus on reducing conflict between roads and small animals. Highlighting habitat connections and the challenges and solutions from both transportation and ecological perspectives, the volume covers various themes, including animal behavior related to roads and design approaches to mitigate the negative effects of roads on wildlife. The chapter authors—from transportation experts to university researchers—each promote a goal of realistic problem solving. Conceptual and practical, this book will influence the next decade or more of road design in ecologically sensitive areas and should prevent countless unnecessary wildlife fatalities. Published in association with The Wildlife Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the relationship between archaeology and local government represents one of the next great challenges facing archaeology –specifically archaeology done in urban settings. Not only does local government have access to powerful legal tools and policy mechanisms that can offer protection for privately owned archaeological sites, but because local government exists at the grassroots level, it is also often closer to people who have deep knowledge about the community itself, about its values, and about the local meaning of the sites most in need of protection. This partnership between archaeology and local government can also provide visibility and public programing for heritage sites. This book will explore the experiences, both positive and negative, of small and large cities globally. We have examined programs in the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the British Commonwealth) and in the United States. These countries share similar perspectives on preservation and heritage, although the approaches these cities have taken to address municipal archaeology reveals considerable diversity. The case studies highlight how these innovative partnerships have developed, and explain how they function within local government. Engaging with the political sphere to advocate for and conduct archaeology requires creativity, flexibility, and the ability to develop collaborative partnerships. How these archaeological partnerships benefit the community is a vital part of the equation. Heritage and tourist benefits are discussed. Economic challenges during downturns in the economy are analyzed. The book also examines public outreach programs and the grassroots efforts to protect and preserve a community's archaeological heritage.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly developing changes in technology, scientific knowledge, and domestic and international environmental issues force analysts to constantly reevaluate how public policy is coping. Are governments leading, following, or falling behind other societal actors? This third volume in a series of annual assessments of Canadian public policy provides an innovative approach to evaluating key developments in one of the most challenging areas of public policy in the twenty-first century. Leading experts look at crucial issues such as climate change, sustainable development policy tools, science management, and the international approach to governing intellectual property. They address recent developments within the pesticide, wildlife, and infrastructure policy areas involving the federal government and key private and non-governmental players. The 2008-09 volume explores the role of governments in a number of key areas, showing that while government institutions and policies should be part of the solution to the complex array of science and technology and environment and development issues facing Canadians, too often it appears they are part of the problem. Contributors include Glen Toner (Carleton), Robert Paehlke (Trent), Mark Jaccard and Rose Murphy (Simon Fraser), Jac van Beek (Canada Foundation for Innovation) and Frances Issaacs (National Research Council of Canada), Sara Bannerman (Carleton), Robert Gibson (Waterloo), David Robinson (Laurentian), Francois Bregha (Stratos Inc.), Scott Findlay and Annick Dezeil (Ottawa), Robert Hilton and Christopher Stoney (Carleton), and Jeremy Wilson (Victoria).
