Book excerpt: The determination of college students' academic performance is an important issue in higher education. Whether students' attendance at lectures affects students' exam performance has received considerable attention. The authors conduct a randomized experiment to study the average attendance effect for students who choose to attend lectures, which is known in program evaluation literature as the average treatment effect on the treated. This effect has long been neglected by researchers when estimating the impact of lecture attendance on students' academic performance. Under the randomized experiment approach, the results suggest that class attendance has a positive and significant impact on college students' exam performance. On average, the effect of attending lectures corresponds to a 9.4 percent to 18.0 percent improvement in exam performance for those who choose to attend classes. In comparison, the improvement is only 5.1 percent, using the empirical method of existing studies, which measures the overall average attendance impact.

The academic achievement or academic performance is measured by the exam score of the students. Structured questionnaires have been prepared which provide a clear guide to extract the exact information from the desired source to conduct to study smoothly and effectively. The findings of this study explored that class attendance has a very strong relationship with academic performance of the student. The strong relationship between variables is claimed by the correlation between class attendance and academic performance of the students which is correlation 0.7686. Since, based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that class attendance has significant impact over academic performance so that it is recommended that compulsory class attendance and scholarship for full attendance are needed to be effectively implemented. This important study has been conducted in many other developed, developing and underdeveloped countries so that it becomes crucial to identify the effect of class attendance on the academic performance of students in Bangladesh.

It also correlates attendance and maturity level of students. This is observed that the students who are attending more lectures get good marks in mid semester test and end semester exams. We here select random data of Digital Electronics (EC-204) of fourth semseter class of Rayat & Bahra Institute of Engineering & Bio-Technology, Sahuran. We found that class attendance has produced a positive and significant impact on students' exam performance. On average, attending lecture corresponds to improvement in exam performance. We here use Two-Way ANOVA for performance analysis.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: In this study we investigate whether class attendance is positively associated with academic performance for a large sample of first year students studying macroeconomics in a regional Australian university. Our findings, based on OLS and Logit models, confirm those of many others in that lecture attendance does contribute to academic performance. Other findings are that prior economics training in high school and a measure of ability or intelligence are both positively and significantly related to academic performance. Males do better than females on multiple choice sections but not on written answer sections of the final exam. Non-minority students do better in the multiple choice section, but not in the written answer section, than minority students. Finally, there is some evidence that longer travel times to and from campus also reduce academic performance.

Data collected from 301 students in microeconomics principles classes taught by the same instructor are used to estimate performance. The empirical analysis controls for the endogeneity of attendance rates and class size. Results indicate that GPA prior to taking the course and SAT scores are consistent predictors of student performance, even after accounting for student withdrawals. In addition, attendance rates are not found to be significant indicators of exam grades after accounting for simultaneity. Since class size and the attendance policy do not appear to influence grades, it is suggested that instructors encourage, but not mandate attendance in both small and large lecture settings.
