Book excerpt: Have you ever asked yourself the questions: Who am I? What makes me happy? Questions that we dare not even ask because we don't deem ourselves worthy or deserving. Maybe we were waiting for someone else's permission to do so-spouse, significant other, "friend" or family member. I was guilty! Those were questions I never really asked myself. I didn't know who I was, much less what I wanted. You only know what you know. Right? At some point in our lives those two questions often come at the lowest moments in our lives. Incidentally, they are the questions that MUST be answered. In this Memoir, Mary E. Gonzalez shares her story of transitioning into the woman she is today. Claiming My Soul is a retailing of her experiences as a woman seeking to survive the day to day of living. She takes us a on a journey of self-acceptance, overcoming trials and tribulation, and holding on to her faith in God in the midst of adversity. The book is a memoir that will enlighten, encourage, inspire, and provide nuggets of wisdom for all ages. It is truly a memoir filled with message of love, hope, faith, and perseverance.

This comprehensive, straightforward program contains effective meditations, visualizations, and inquiries to support you on the often messy, winding, and yet amusing path of discovering your Soul in modern times. Meet Your Soul not only tells you how to access your Soul connection but also preps you for some of the common obstacles you’re likely to encounter on your journey. With her kind and informed direction, you’ll learn to: • Understand the crucial distinction between ego, Spirit, and Soul • Create and cultivate a strong spiritual practice • Distinguish your Soul Truth from the beliefs of family, friends, and society • Clearly access the voice of your Soul • Gain awareness of the key Soul contracts in your life and discover your Divine purpose This book helps you meet the oldest, wisest, and most loving part of yourself—the part that gives meaning and purpose to your life. Elisa shows that each of us has the capacity to hear this personal, unique guidance directly. You needn’t look outside yourself to a guru, program, or system; rather you can simply look within.

Book excerpt: Science has always created problems for traditional ways of seeing things, but now the very attributes that make us human--free will, the permanence of personal identity, the existence of the soul--are threatened by the science of the mind. If the mind is the brain, and therefore a physical object subject to deterministic laws, how can we have free will? If most of our thoughts and impulses are unconscious, how can we be morally responsible for what we do? If brains and bodies undergo relentless change, how can our identities be constant? The Problem of the Soul shows the way out of these paradoxes. Framing the conflict in terms of two dominant visions of the mind--the "manifest image" of humanistic philosophy and theology, and the scientific image--Owen Flanagan demonstrates that there is common ground, and that we need not give up our ideas of moral responsibility and personal freedom in order to have an empirically sound view of the human mind. This is a profoundly relevant work of philosophy for the common reader.

Book excerpt: This is not a book for the intellect alone. These poems are songs of the heart, anthems of the soul claiming its freedom to thrive in a world of change and cleansing. They are meant to engage the body, the emotions and the higher mind, like vehicles of passion, to assist in waking up to the power of heartfelt consciousness and the reality of home. They are meant to trigger a longing for the celebration of life and the courage to see through the veil of limited human conditioning, of religious beliefs of separation and survival fears. They are vibrational, passionate movements of energy, a dance of words and symbols which can open the heart and mind to expanded realms of a living, loving Universe of limitless joy and creative possibility. My intention is to honor the power of human free will choice in claiming the right and the ability and the freedom to create a quality of life that we truly deserve, a life of tranquility, uniqueness, harmony, belonging, and infinite unconditional love. Book excerpt: Though the gender-coded soul-body dynamic lies at the root of many negative and disempowering depictions of women, Sarah Johnson here argues that it also functions as an effective tool for redefining gender expectations. Building on past criticism that has concentrated on the debilitating cultural association of women with the body, she investigates dramatic uses of the soul-body dynamic that challenge the patriarchal subordination of women. Focusing on two tragedies, two comedies, and a small selection of masques, from approximately 1592-1614, Johnson develops a case for the importance of drama to scholarly considerations of the soul-body dynamic, which habitually turn to devotional works, sermons, and philosophical and religious treatises to elucidate this relationship. Johnson structures her discussion around four theatrical relationships, each of which is a gendered relationship analogous to the central soul-body dynamic: puppeteer and puppet, tamer and tamed, ghost and haunted, and observer and spectacle. Through its thorough and nuanced readings, this study redefines one of the period’s most pervasive analogies for conceptualizing women and their relations to men as more complex and shifting than criticism has previously assumed. It also opens a new interpretive framework for reading representations of women, adding to the ongoing feminist re-evaluation of the kinds of power women might actually wield despite the patriarchal strictures of their culture.
