Adding to her growing sense of discomfort, Mariah receives devastating news about her health. She learns that she will never be able to bear a child. Mariah’s best friend Crystal has complicated feelings about Malcolm. Part of her longs to be touched by him again, to rekindle the passion she’s felt for him since high school. But mostly, she’s suspicious of Malcolm’s commitment to his wife because she saw Malcolm kissing another woman the night before his wedding. Since then, she hasn’t trusted him, and although her husband warns her to leave well enough alone, she can’t help herself. Shortly before his tenth anniversary, Malcolm receives some uncomfortable news that changes everything. After carrying on an affair for years, he is trying to end things with Eva to save his marriage. However, it might be too late, because Eva reveals that she’s pregnant with his child, and she has no intention of letting him walk away from his responsibility. Feeling like he has no choice, Malcolm goes home and tells his wife the truth—or at least part of it. These characters are quickly caught up in a tangled web of deceit, distrust, and misguided passions. When tragedy strikes and someone ends up dead, things only get more complicated.

Download or read book Jamaica Kincaid written by Moira Ferguson and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a writer who has been quoted as saying she writes to save her life- that is she couldn't write, she would be a revolutionary- Antiguan novelist Jamaica Kincaid translates this passion into searing, exhilarating prose. Her weaving of history, autobiography, fiction, and polemic has won her a large readership. In this first book-length study of her work, Moira Ferguson examines all of Kincaid's writing up to 1992, focusing especially o their entwinement of personal and political identity. In doing so, she draws a parallel between the dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship in Kincaid's fiction and the more political relationship of the colonizer and the colonized. Ferguson calls this effect the "doubled mother"- a conception of motherhood as both colonial and biological.

Book Synopsis Claiming Union Widowhood by : Brandi Clay Brimmer
Download or read book Claiming Union Widowhood written by Brandi Clay Brimmer and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Claiming Union Widowhood, Brandi Clay Brimmer analyzes the US pension system from the perspective of poor black women during and after the Civil War. Reconstructing the grassroots pension network in New Bern, North Carolina, through a broad range of historical sources, she outlines how the mothers, wives, and widows of black Union soldiers struggled to claim pensions in the face of evidentiary obstacles and personal scrutiny. Brimmer exposes and examines the numerous attempts by the federal government to exclude black women from receiving the federal pensions that they had been promised. Her analyses illustrate the complexities of social policy and law administration and the interconnectedness of race, gender, and class formation. Expanding on previous analyses of pension records, Brimmer offers an interpretive framework of emancipation and the freedom narrative that places black women at the forefront of demands for black citizenship.
