It analyzes specifically the eight counties of Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott, and Woodford. Furnishing much of the state's political leadership and serving as the center of livestock and agricultural production and hemp manufacturing, central Kentucky was a highly influential part of the state. The war had a sharp impact upon the lives of central Kentuckians. Although few military engagements were fought on their soil and property destruction was slight, the inhabitants suffered in many other ways. Political questions tore apart many families, neighborhoods, churches, and schools. Traditional markets for Bluegrass products, especially in the first two years of the war, were disrupted; creditors lost debts in the state and in the South; debtors faced many pressures to meet their obligations; and farms fell into disrepair as men went off to the battlefield and as slavery fell apart as an institution. The border status of Kentucky insured that its inhabitants would suffer deep and bitter political division during the war. Central Kentuckians experienced the same political animosities which existed throughout much of the state. Although Unionists in the Bluegrass region were able to win two early elections in 1861, one of which returned Crittenden to Congress, the region primarily supported the Confederacy. It furnished more soldiers for the South than for the North. Unionists were able to keep their party together during the war years because of the military support given them by the Union forces which occupied the region after September, 1861. Central Kentuckians became more southern in their sentiments during the war as Federal measures weakened slavery. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and Federal enlistment of slaves as soldiers intensified opposition to Lincoln in the region. The hostility Bluegrass Kentuckians felt for Lincoln was demonstrated in the election of 1864 in which they overwhelmingly supported McClellan for the presidency. In the post-war years, they continued to express their sympathy for the Confederacy.
