Book Synopsis Rationalizing Migration Decisions by : Dr A K M Ahsan Ullah
Download or read book Rationalizing Migration Decisions written by Dr A K M Ahsan Ullah and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While decisions for working overseas are often based on expectations and promises of better jobs, opportunities, economic gains and, eventually, a better future, such assumptions may not always be realized. Focusing on the question of why migrants, despite not realizing their earlier aspirations, continue to remain as migrants rather than return home, this book provides a unified understanding of the rationalization of the migration decision making. It does so by empirically situating the study in the experiences of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Book Synopsis Road Map to Scale Up Solar Irrigation Pumps in Bangladesh (2023–2031) by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Road Map to Scale Up Solar Irrigation Pumps in Bangladesh (2023–2031) written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This road map shows how Bangladesh can swap diesel irrigation pumps for solar powered systems to reduce fuel imports, increase farmers’ incomes, and support the country’s clean energy transition. It provides guidelines for the installation of up to 45,000 solar irrigation pumps, which could cut annual diesel consumption by 300,000 tons. The plan would support 1.3 million farmers and give them the chance to sell surplus electricity. Setting out financing proposals, the publication explains how the zero-carbon pumps can drive more sustainable groundwater use, reduce poverty and inequality, and help Bangladesh better adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.

Book Synopsis Descriptive Grammar of Bangla by : Anne Boyle David
Download or read book Descriptive Grammar of Bangla written by Anne Boyle David and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangla is spoken as the majority language in Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal in India, and as a minority language in several other Indian states. With almost 200 million native speakers, it ranks among the top ten languages in the world in number of speakers. Based on both primary and secondary materials, the CASL Bangla grammar provides comprehensive coverage of the phonology, orthography, morphology, and syntax of Bangla. Plentiful examples of naturally-occurring sentences provide native orthography, Romanization, and morpheme-by-morpheme glossing along with free translations. Unlike many Romanizations of Bangla, our system eschews Sanskritic influence and instead reflects actual Bangla phonology. We also offer comparative information of use to linguists, highlighting features of Bangla shared with the South Asian sprachbund, such as light verb constructions, as well as those that differentiate Bangla from its Indo-Aryan relatives; for example, its unique NP structure. Written in an accessible style from a theory-neutral perspective, this work will be of use to linguistic researchers, language scholars, and students of Bangla. A formal grammar focusing on the morphology is an available companion work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's urban population now exceeds the world's rural population. Following on from previous State of the World's Cities reports, this edition uses the framework of 'The Urban Divide' to analyse the complex social, political, economic and cultural dynamics of urban environments. The volume will be essential reading for all professionals and policymakers in the field, as well as a valuable resource for researchers and students in all aspects of urban development. Book Synopsis Climate Afflictions by : Iffat Mahmud
Download or read book Climate Afflictions written by Iffat Mahmud and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change is well documented; the evidence on the direct relationship between climate change and health focusing on Bangladesh is less so. Global evidence suggests intensification of climate change will increase incidences and variations of infectious diseases. Climate Afflictions contributes to filling this important knowledge gap. It includes a systematic review of existing literature on the relationship between climate change and health, distinguishing between climate change and variability. It establishes the relationship between climate variability and infectious diseases and mental health using household-level data. It also documents changes in climate patterns in Bangladesh over the past 44 years using monthly meteorological data. Overall, the report finds a strong relationship between infectious diseases, mental health, and climate variability. Based on analyses of primary data, it concludes that the prevalence of vector-borne diseases is higher during the monsoon than dry seasons, while the opposite is true for waterborne illnesses. Meanwhile, rising humidity and mean temperature are positively associated with respiratory illnesses. In terms of mental health conditions, while temperature is negatively correlated to depression, anxiety among individuals is likely to increase with temperature and humidity. Irrespective of the season, morbidity and mental health issues are highest in densely populated urban hubs such as Dhaka and Chattogram compared to other areas. The mean temperature in Bangladesh has increased by 0.5°C between 1976 and 2019. Overall, summers are becoming hotter and longer, the monsoon season is extending, and winters are becoming warmer. Consequently, Bangladesh is on the path to losing its distinct seasonality. With global warming progressing faster than initially projected, stresses on human health may be elevated to an extent that can overburden the systems to a point at which adaptation will no longer be possible. Countries susceptible to climate change, like Bangladesh, need to be better prepared.
