Travel Destinations: Nelles Guide Egypt leads you from Cairo, the pulsating metropolis, to the timeless beauty of the Nile oasis. It covers everything: the magnificient monuments from the days of the Pharaohs, splendid mosques and churches as well as the beautiful beaches of Alexandria and the Red Sea, the bizarre mountains of the Sinai and the pristine oases of the Sahara. Other features report on such subjects as the Aswan dam, the Nobel prize winner Nagib Mahfuz, the art and gods of the pharaohs and the science of egyptology. Book Synopsis Landscape Archaeology of the Western Nile Delta by : Joshua R. Trampier
Download or read book Landscape Archaeology of the Western Nile Delta written by Joshua R. Trampier and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different ideas of what constitutes an archaeological site have developed over two centuries of scholarship and heritage law in Egypt, with sites often (unconsciously) conceived as lands with museum-quality pieces and striking monumental, mortuary, and/or epigraphic remains. As a result, the material record of the powerful dominates Egyptological discourse, leaving hundreds of unexplored sites in the Delta floodplain and their potential contributions to a narrative of Egyptian culture largely ignored. Attempting to correct this, the author integrates historical maps, remote sensing data, and ancient texts to understand the dynamic landscape of the western Nile Delta. Weaving together new archaeological survey, Corona satellite images, and a targeted program of drill coring, this volume offers a palimpsest of settlement and paleoenvironment from the New Kingdom to Late Roman era. In the face of forces undermining many sites' integrity, this study adapts techniques in landscape archaeology to an Egyptian context, anticipating triage and salvage in the decades to come.

Book excerpt: Already the most comprehensive guide ever for desert and oasis travel in Egypt west of the Nile, The Western Desert of Egypt: An Explorer's Handbook has now been fully revised and updated for the latest generation of twenty-first century desert adventurers. Fully illustrated with some 50 maps and plans and over 270 drawings, the guide covers both the natural history and the human history of the desert and the oases. It then explores chapter by chapter the oases of Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariya, Fayoum, and Siwa, and the desert areas of al-Diffa (the northern, semiarid edge of the desert), the Darb al-Arbain caravan route in the south, and Uwaynat (including Gilf Kebir) in the southwest. Descriptions of routes, sites, people, and places are complemented by practical information on places to stay, eat, and fill your gas tank. Global positioning system (GPS) waypoints are provided as an aid to navigation on many routes--though for the sake of conservation and the protection of unguarded antiquities they are not given for remote sites. Almost encyclopedic in its scope, this is the one guide that belongs on the bookshelf, dashboard, or rucksack of every Western Desert traveler.

Book Synopsis In the Vicinity of the Righteous by : Taylor
Download or read book In the Vicinity of the Righteous written by Taylor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first in-depth scholarly study of the institution of ziyāra (visiting tombs), and its central role in the cult of Muslim saints in late medieval Egypt (1200-1500 A.D.), makes an original contribution to the social history of religion. It explores the range of meanings that saints held for the contemporary imagination through richly textured descriptions and analysis of the great cemetery of al-Qarāfa, the rituals of the ziyāra, and the entertaining stories told to pious visitors about the saints. It thus provides a vivid sense of this vital expression of Muslim spirituality. Through an examination of legal debates surrounding ziyāra, the dichotomous view of 'high' versus 'popular' religion is effectively challenged in favor of a more fluid model of cultural discourse.

Book Synopsis Canaan and Israel in Antiquity: A Textbook on History and Religion by : K. L. Noll
Download or read book Canaan and Israel in Antiquity: A Textbook on History and Religion written by K. L. Noll and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive classic textbook represents the most recent approaches to the biblical world by surveying Palestine's social, political, economic, religious and ecological changes from Palaeolithic to Roman eras. Designed for beginners with little knowledge of the ancient world, and with copious illustrations and charts, it explains how and why academic study of the past is undertaken, as well as the differences between historical and theological scholarship and the differences between ancient and modern genres of history writing. Classroom tested chapters emphasize the authenticity of the Bible as a product of an ancient culture, and the many problems with the biblical narrative as a historical source. Neither "maximalist" nor "minimalist'" it is sufficiently general to avoid confusion and to allow the assignment of supplementary readings such as biblical narratives and ancient Near Eastern texts. This new edition has been fully revised, incorporating new graphics and English translations of Near Eastern inscriptions. New material on the religiously diverse environment of Ancient Israel taking into account the latest archaeological discussions brings this book right up to date.
