Book excerpt: Boydell & Brewer are pleased to announce that as from 1 December 2001 they will be distributing the Victoria County History, which has an international reputation as a work of reference for English local history. Begun in 1899, the publication of about three new volumes each year is gradually creating an encyclopedic history of the counties, ranging from earliest times to the present. For each county there is or is planned a set of volumes, containing general chapters on subjects such as prehistory and ecclesiastical and economic history, and topographical chapters giving a comprehensive, fully referenced account of each city, town and village in the county. Fourteen county sets have been completed; work is in progress on a further thirteen.

Book excerpt: 'Building for Life' is the industry standard, endorsed by Government, for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods that local communities, local authorities and developers are invited to use to stimulate conversations about creating good places to live. The 12 questions reflect our vision of what new housing developments should be: attractive, functional and sustainable places. Redesigned in 2012, this text is based on the new National Planning Policy Framework and the Government's commitment to build more homes, better homes and involve local communities in planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High speed rail is already being constructed or been used in many nations. Britain's exile from this would mean losing out to global competitors. The long term option in investing in high speed rail would transform and allow Britain to compete globally and for national economic prosperity. Such investment in faster and more convenient journeys between the major cities and international networks will achieve two objectives; supporting companies and wealth creators and also better connect communities. Further upgrades of existing lines can provide additional capacity but growth in demand looks set to outstrip the pace of this and is seen as a short term approach unable to meet long term challenges. The choice is not between building new lines or not but what type of new line to build and new lines only built to enable conventional speeds would certainly fail to reap the economic rewards offered by high speed. HS2 is also about enough capacity for passengers - those on crowded inter city trains will increasingly be forced to stand for long periods and for commuters who eventually will be unable to get on their trains at peak times. There are further benefits of increasing rail freight, getting lorries off roads and saving carbon. The Government is also committed to developing a national high speed rail network with the lowest feasible impacts on local communities and the natural environment. In response to the consultation process there have been changes - additional tunnelling and alignment of the route in a number of places. The Government wishes to see further engagement with local people as the project progresses and as further environmental assessment is undertaken. The Government wants to reassure people that the project is both affordable and can be delivered to time and budget

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GN built the Nottingham-Grantham line primarily to carry coal from its Midlands origins to the main markets in the South. With minerals accounting for 60% of business, discovery of iron ore in the area of the line brought major expansion, not only of local branches but also the north-south Newark-Melton and Leicester routes. This book gives a fascinating insight into the lines as they were originally built, the effect of the major expansion and traffic volumes, wartime traffics, and also covers the decline and closure of much of the system in the 50s and 60s. Modernisation and current operation of the Nottingham-Grantham line is also covered, with a review of the closed lines remaining features that today's visitors can find. The authors background is in signalling and traffic operation, both feature in this absorbing new book. This book completes the series of four by author Alf Henshaw.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental impact assessments are an essential component of making decisions on transport infrastructure investments. Traditional procedures have proved ineffective for impacts that go beyond the scope of projects in isolation. Strategic environmental assessment has emerged in response, to address large scale effects including impacts on traffic across networks, impacts on climate change and biodiversity and the impacts of policy decisions as opposed simply to individual projects. This report examines recent experience in developing environmental assessment internationally and makes recommendations on maximising the effectiveness of this new tool.
