Book Synopsis Ionization Rates Due to the Absorption of Solar Protons and Alpha Particles in the Upper Atmosphere by : William Swider
Download or read book Ionization Rates Due to the Absorption of Solar Protons and Alpha Particles in the Upper Atmosphere written by William Swider and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ionization rates generated by atmospheric attenuation of solar protons and alpha particles, with integral exponential rigidity spectrums, are calculated for selected values of particle rigidity and geomagnetic cutoff. Ionization produced by these energetic particles creates polar cap absorption events, which disturb radio and radar communications. The ionization rates are required in order to formulate models for these events. (Author).

Book Synopsis Experimental Evidence in Support of Joule Heating Associated with Geomagnetic Activity by : Leonard L. DeVries
Download or read book Experimental Evidence in Support of Joule Heating Associated with Geomagnetic Activity written by Leonard L. DeVries and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution accelerometer measurements in the altitude region 140 to 300 km from a satellite in a near-polar orbit during a period of extremely high geomagnetic activity indicate that Joule heating is the primary source of energy for atmospheric heating associated with geomagnetic activity. This conclusion is supported by the following observational evidence: (1) There is an atmospheric response in the auroral zone which is nearly simulataneous with the onset of geomagnetic activity, with no significant response in the equatorial region until several hours later; (2) The maximum heating occurs at geographic locations near the maximum current of the auroral electrojet; and (3) There is evidence of atmospheric waves originating near the auroral zone at altitudes where Joule heating would be expected to occur. An analysis of atmospheric response time to this heat shows time delays are apparently independent of altitude but are strongly dependent upon geomagnetic latitude.

Book Synopsis On the Role of Vertical Neutral-gas Motions in Producing Ion Convergence at E-region Heights by : William H. Hooke
Download or read book On the Role of Vertical Neutral-gas Motions in Producing Ion Convergence at E-region Heights written by William H. Hooke and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and observational results are used to suggest that vertical neutral-gas motions are generally important in applications of the magnetoshear theory of sporadic E, as has been recently demonstrated in a particular instance by M. A. MacLeod. It is argued that much of the vertical neutral-gas motion present at these heights must be of gravity-wave origin and shown that gravity-wave-associated vertical motions of the neutral gas should support (oppose) the action of wave-associated horizontal motions in producing ion convergence when the wave is propagating toward the east (toward the west). It is also argued that the full vector ion velocity, rather than only its vertical component, must be used in applications of the magnetoshear theory.

Book Synopsis A Numerical Model for Investigation of Ozone Transport in the Atmosphere by : Louis Berkofsky
Download or read book A Numerical Model for Investigation of Ozone Transport in the Atmosphere written by Louis Berkofsky and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A zonally averaged model, including photochemistry, is devised to study the effects of transport by mean meridional motions and eddy diffusion upon the ozone concentration. The model contains twenty-two levels in the vertical from the ground to 66 km and eighteen grid points, from pole to pole, in the horizontal. In the paper, investigations are limited to effects of mean meridional motions. Numerical integrations are carried out for a period of two years. Results show that the model reproduces the annual period of the atmosphere. While mean meridional motions do transport ozone away from tropical regions, they are not sufficient to account for the observed buildup of ozone in high latitudes. (Author).

Book Synopsis Noctilucent Clouds by : Michael Gadsden
Download or read book Noctilucent Clouds written by Michael Gadsden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An atmospheric phenomenon is considered as 'explained' when we have succeeded in deducing it on the basis of accepted principles of physics. (H. Ertel, Methods and problems of dynamical meteorolo gy,p. l) Until recently, noctilucent clouds were regarded merely as a curious atmos pheric phenomenon, the occurrence of which aroused only limited scientific attention. However, in the last two decades the interest they have been given has markedly increased. The clouds, usually pale blue in colour, may be seen on a clear night at high latitudes. Typical examples are illustrated in the book. Clouds looking like these in daytime would be classified as cirrostratus. What sets noctilucent clouds apart is their occurrence in the middle of the night, their very obvious pale blue colour, and their disappearance into the dawn close to the onset of civil twilight when the Sun is 6° below the horizon. as being set apart from ordinary Noctilucent clouds were first recognized clouds in 1884/1885 and in a series of sightings that followed their return in the summer of 1885. That year marked the beginning of observations and the interpretation of twilight phenomena. The impetus came from the extraordi nary Krakatoa eruption, which was not only one of the most spectacular volcanic eruptions in recorded history, but which also turned out to be a startling event in atmospheric science with repercussions even in our time.
