Book excerpt: The organizations in this Snap Shot study play a vital role in the cultural arts field highlighting institutions that reflect the aesthetic spectrum of excellence grounded in the international community perspectives that nurtured their growth. These organizations reflect the rich tapestry of racial and cultural groups that are major contributors to the cultural life of this nation. They also represent important pillars in the infrastructure of historically underserved and under-resourced communities of color and poor white rural sectors. This initial ³Snap Shot² has raised more questions than it answers. It is clear that a more extensive, in-depth study must be conducted to fully understand how organizations that are critical assets to their communities and influence the cultural diverse programming of large organizations are still fragile and at risk of surviving. Similar to the questions raised by the Occupy Wall Street Movement, how does the role of the top 1% of wealthy individuals, corporate, foundation, and public funders, influence policies to disproportionately support the more endowed organizations and under resource the community cultural organizations that reflect the 99%?Historical underfunding coupled with economic crisis have further impacted the ability of these important organizations to sustain their operations and some of the Snap Shot organizations have been forced to close their doors. Others continue to struggle to survive while serving their communities who are also at risk due to the fiscal crisis that has heightened unemployment, homelessness and decreased social services vital to the infrastructure of underserved communities. These community cultural arts organizations are in large part multidisciplinary in their framework and are beacons of light for communities that still believe in the promise of equal opportunity and access for all.Since the second edition of Cultural Centers of Color by the National Endowment for the Arts, December 1993 (first edition, August 1992) there has not been a critical look at the state of the community cultural arts field. This preliminary study begins to address this void by identifying a sample of multidisciplinary cultural arts community organizations that developed specifically to address the cultural and artistic contributions, histories, and cultural legacies of their communities to a national audience. The work of these organizations have been instrumental in making visible and insisting that the stories of their communities are part of our nations narrative. The realization that these vital small and mid-size community organizations survive in a year-to-year funding world speaks to the commitment of Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and audiences that are committed to their survival. It is our expectations that this Snap Shot of Community Based Cultural Arts Organizations encourages policymakers, funders, and communities to understand the critical voices that these institutions contribute to the cultural life of the Nation, our international profile, and their immediate communities.

Book Synopsis The Performing Arts in a New Era by :

Book excerpt: The Pew Charitable Trust commissioned The Performing Arts in a New Era from RAND in 1999 as part of a broad initiative aimed at increasing policy and financial support for nonprofit culture in the United States. The goal of this study was to assist us in bringing new and useful information to the policy debate about the contributions and needs of the cultural sector at the national, state, and local levels. The study was inspired in part by a pair of landmark reports on the performing arts published during the mid-196Os: The Performing Arts: Problems and Prospects, the Rockefeller Panel Report on the Future of Theatre, Dance, Music in America (1965); and the Twentieth Century Fund's report, Performing Arts: The Economic Dilemma, by William J. Baumol and William G. Bowen (1966). These reports described the burgeoning landscape of the nonprofit professional performing arts in the United States, articulating their benefits to American society and calling for a level of governmental and philanthropic support sufficient to their needs. Both reports noted that it was appropriate, at a time when the industrial economy of the United States had grown and prospered and the material needs of its citizens were by and large being met, for the nation to turn its attention to nonmaterial values-what would now be characterized as quality-of-life concerns-including the emotional, intellectual, and aesthetic satisfaction that the arts can provide. Indeed, in the 196Os, few Americans living outside the coastal cities had access to live professional performing arts experiences, and arts advocates urged that the situation be remedied.
Book Synopsis Invention in Retention by : Jarrod Markman

Book excerpt: Performing arts organizations face the challenge of balancing programming for established patrons and attracting new and more diverse audiences. The retention of new audiences is a critical factor in creating a more inclusive and diverse donor base, which is essential for the financial stability of nonprofit performing arts organizations. However, many performing arts organizations are struggling to retain and convert new audience members into long-term patrons and donors - others might not even track these trends at all. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if American performing arts organizations are successfully converting new audience members into long-term patrons and donors. The literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by performing arts organizations in terms of retaining and converting new patrons and identifies strategies that can be implemented to improve retention and conversion rates. The literature also highlights the lack of diversity in donor bases and the challenges this poses for building more representative and inclusive institutions. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to contribute to the financial stability and diversification of programming of performing arts organizations by exploring ways to retain new, diverse patrons and convert them into loyal supporters. This thesis finds that while organizations recognize the importance of this goal, their implementation often falls short. The study emphasizes the need for personalized marketing, cultivation events, and engagement opportunities tailored to diverse audiences, as well as the integration of marketing and development teams and the cultivation of authentic relationships. Based on survey data from 12 performing arts organizations and in-depth interviews with four performing arts organizations this thesis concludes that by adopting these practices and prioritizing efforts to retain diverse patrons and convert them into donors, organizations can secure sustainable financial support and strengthen ties with their target communities.

Book Synopsis Documenting Performance by : Toni Sant

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance in the digital age has undergone a radical shift in which a once ephemeral art form can now be relived, replayed and repeated. Until now, much scholarship has been devoted to the nature of live performance in the digital age; Documenting Performance is the first book to provide a collection of key writings about the process of documenting performance, focused not on questions of liveness or the artistic qualities of documents, but rather on the professional approaches to recovering, preserving and disseminating knowledge of live performance. Through its four-part structure, the volume introduces readers to important writings by international practitioners and scholars on: * the contemporary context for documenting performance * processes of documenting performance * documenting bodies in motion * documenting to create In each, chapters examine the ways performance is documented and the issues arising out of the process of documenting performance. While theorists have argued that performance becomes something else whenever it is documented, the writings reveal how the documents themselves cannot be regarded simply as incomplete remains from live events. The methods for preserving and managing them over time, ensuring easy access of such materials in systematic archives and collections, requires professional attention in its own right. Through the process of documenting performance, artists acquire a different perspective on their own work, audiences can recall specific images and sounds for works they have witnessed in person, and others who did not see the original work can trace the memories of particular events, or use them to gain an understanding of something that would otherwise remain unknown to them and their peers.
