Como comprobará el lector, el debate suscitado por su presencia en el cine trasciende los límites del medio para aproximarse a una rica discusión sobre la imagen de España. Así, la españolada es un género literario, pictórico, musical y, finalmente, cinematográfico, cuyas raíces entroncan con el siglo XVI, justamente en los albores de la construcción de una identidad nacional. Los personajes, acciones, argumentos, acontecimientos y tramas que lo conforman son rastreables en las manifestaciones artísticas españolas, preferiblemente populares, desde el seiscientos. Aunque el proceso de etiquetaje, la aparición de un marbete aglutinador de estos componentes de ascendencia popular, denostados y repudiados por la oficialidad de las artes, se debe a los románticos europeos, especialmente a los franceses y a la creación del término espagnolade. En consecuencia, para la historia de las artes, incluida la del cine, esto ha convertido al extranjero en el creador y padre de la españolada. Sin embargo, éste sólo ha puesto nombre a un conjunto de manifestaciones y gustos populares (gitanismos, andalucismo, bravuconadas, torerías, supersticiones, danzas aflamencadas) presentes desde tiempos inmemoriales en la vena popular de las artes españolas. Además, la españolada es un problema que ha preocupado al español desde siempre, pues su esencia encierra una determinada imagen de España. Esta última característica, junto a su origen popular y su pretendida génesis foránea, ha motivado virulentas opiniones en su contra, sobre todo cuando el problema de la españolidad, concepto antitético del de españolada, se erigió en una cuestión de importancia nacional para políticos, intelectuales y críticos cinematográficos.

Analyzing a series of Iberian cinematic dark comedies from the 1950s to the present day, Patriarchy’s Remains argues that the cinematic trope of the patriarchal death symbolizes the lingering remains of the Francisco Franco dictatorship in Spain (1939–75). These films, created as satirical responses to persisting economic, social, and political issues, demonstrate that Spain’s transition to democracy following the Francoist period is an incomplete and ongoing process. Within the theme of patriarchal decay, the significance of the figure differs across cinematic representations, from his indispensability to his obstructionism and exploitation. Erin Hogan traces the prevalence of patriarchal death by analyzing its relationship with the surrounding characters who must depend on the deceased. Hogan demonstrates how the patriarch’s persistence in film both reveals and challenges an array of discriminations and inequalities in the cinematic grotesque tradition, in Iberian cinemas more broadly, and in Iberian society as a whole. Despite Spain’s ongoing transition towards democratic pluralism, Patriarchy’s Remains serves as a reminder that the remnants of an entrenched although not interred patriarchal culture continue to haunt Iberian society.

There is a narrative in Spanish cinema, taken as a collective discourse, which ties together these four cinematic topoi and proposes a nation whose specificity must be precisely its impurity-difference within as essence-a hybrid nation located in temporal and spatial rendezvous of past and present, tradition and novelty, centre and margin, inside and outside, on and beyond.
