The original papers were prepared by the author with much care; and at the time of their appearance, as well as since, many desires were expressed for their publication in a more enduring form. Since the original sketches were written, great changes have occurred in the surroundings then considered by the extension of the city limits. On the twenty-eighth of February, 1870, the final transcripts and other papers were transmitted to the Secretary of State and the Recorder of Hamilton county for the annexation of all of Storrs township with the exception of the territory embraced within the incorporated village of Riverside. On the same day similar steps were taken for the annexation of the territory in Spencer township, lying between the eastern boundary of Cincinnati and the western boundary of the village of Columbia, including the village of Pendleton. The Catalogue of Plants of Cincinnati, published in 1879, was compiled hastily, and errors unfortunately crept in. Some of these were corrected, and some additions made in 1881, by Mr. D. L. James. The present observations embody the results of study of some of our species and genera, and are here presented in the hope of making our flora better known, and of inducing others to study it. Some of the notes have appeared elsewhere, but others are entirely new. I feel indebted to many persons for information in regard to localities. Most of all, to the late Mr. T. W. Spurlock, one of the most indefatigable students our flora has ever had; to the Misses Mohr, Dr. R. M. Byrnes, Mr. D. L. James, Mr. George B. Twitchell, Mr. C. B. Going, Mr. C. G. Lloyd and Mr. A. P. Morgan, I am also indebted, and desire to thank for their assistance in making the list more complete than it otherwise would have been. Ranunculacae. 7. Anemone Thailictroides, L., has been considered by many writers Thalictrum Anemevoides, Michx. It is still so named in Gray's Manual, and that authority was followed in the catalogue of 1879. Study of the species convinced me that it was more of an Ancmone than a Thalictrum, and in Bull. Torr. Bot. Club, vol x., p. 56, I suggested that the old Linnean name be restored, and for the following reasons: It differs essentially from Thalictrum in having an involucre, and agrees in all respects with Anemone, except that Dr. Gray makes the arbitrary distinction, ''achenia - not ribbed.'' Omit the not and let it read, "Achenia pointed or tailed, flattened or ribbed," and the generic description of Anemone of Dr. Gray will fit admirably the Rue-Anemone. Since making my note to this effect, I find that Bentham and Hooker have placed Syndesmon, lloffm., under Anemone, though Dr. Gray considered it a subgenus under Thalictrum. 11. Trautvetteria palmata, F. M., was inserted into the catalogue of 1879, on the authority of Mr. Lea's list published in 1849. One is along the bank of the river, toward the East, which has been already occupied. Another is the valley of Mill Creek, toward the North. And the third is along the bank Of the Ohio, toward the West. Some have supposed that engineers could find a natural grade, suitable for a rail-road, toward the West, or North west, between the valley of Mill Creek and the river route. But they could not have reflected upon the fact, that the general level of the country, between the city and the Great Miami, is four hundred feet above the level of the city, while the valley of the Great Miami, between Hamil ton and the Ohio, is not twenty feet higher than the city and the distance between the Mill Creek Valley, and that of the Miami, is too short to allow Of any desirable grade for a rail-road, ascending to that general level of the country, and descending again to that of the Miami. In the year 1849, was granted the present charter of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton rail-road Company, which is now taking possession of the valley of Mill Creek; the second, of the three natural avenues to and from our city.
