Book Synopsis The Fantastic in Literature by : Eric S. Rabkin
Download or read book The Fantastic in Literature written by Eric S. Rabkin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is the fantastic? In the twentieth-century world, our notions of what is impossible are assaulted every day. To define the nature of fantasy and the fantastic, Eric S. Rabkin considers its role in fairy tales, science fiction, detective stories, and religious allegory, as well as in traditional literature. The examples he studies range from Grimm's fairy tales to Agatha Christie, from Childhood's End to the novels of Henry James, from Voltaire to Robbe-Grillet to A Canticle for Leiboivitz. By analyzing different works of literature, the author shows that the fantastic depends on a reversal of the ground rules of a narrative world. This reversal signals most commonly a psychological escape, often from boredom, to an unknown world secretly yearned for, whose order, although reversed, bears a precise relation to reality. Originally published in 1976. Download or read book Ozu written by Donald Richie and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1977-03-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Substantially the book that devotees of the director have been waiting for: a full-length critical work about Ozu's life, career and working methods, buttressed with reproductions of pages from his notebooks and shooting scripts, numerous quotes from co-workers and Japanese critics, a great many stills and an unusually detailed filmography."—Sight and Sound Yasujiro Ozu, the man whom his kinsmen consider the most Japanese for all film directors, had but one major subject, the Japanese family, and but one major theme, its dissolution. The Japanese family in dissolution figures in every one of his fifty-three films. In his later pictures, the whole world exists in one family, the characters are family members rather than members of a society, and the ends of the earth seem no more distant than the outside of the house.
Book Synopsis Fantasy and Mimesis (Routledge Revivals) by : Kathryn Hume
Download or read book Fantasy and Mimesis (Routledge Revivals) written by Kathryn Hume and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Plato and Aristotle’s declaration of the essence of literature as imitation, western narrative has been traditionally discussed in mimetic terms. Marginalized fantasy- the deliberate from reality – has become the hidden face of fiction, identified by most critics as a minor genre. First published in 1984, this book rejects generic definitions of fantasy, arguing that it is not a separate or even separable strain in literary practice, but rather an impulse as significant as that of mimesis. Together, fantasy and mimesis are the twin impulses behind literary creation. In an analysis that ranges from the Icelandic sagas to science fiction, from Malory to pulp romance, Kathryn Hume systematically examines the various ways in which fantasy and mimesis contribute to literary representations of reality. A detailed and comprehensive title, this reissue will be of particular value to undergraduate literature students with an interest in literary genres and the centrality of literature to the creative imagination.
Book Synopsis The Occult, Witchcraft and Magic by : Christopher Dell
Download or read book The Occult, Witchcraft and Magic written by Christopher Dell and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The curious history of magic and the powers of the occult, witchcraft, ritual, and the imagination, from their earliest appearances to modern times From the days of the earliest Paleolithic cave rituals, magic has gripped the imagination. Magic and magicians appear in early Babylonian texts, the Bible, Judaism, and Islam. Secret words, spells, and incantations lie at the heart of nearly every mythological tradition. But for every genuine magus there is an impostor. During the Middle Ages, religion, science, and magic were difficult to set apart. The Middle Ages also saw the pursuit of alchemy—the magical transformation of base materials—which led to a fascination with the occult, Freemasonry, and Rosicrucianism. The turn of the twentieth century witnessed a return to earlier magical traditions, and today, magic means many things: contemporary Wicca is practiced widely as a modern pagan religion in Europe and the US; “magic” also stretches to include the nonspiritual, rapid-fire sleight of hand performed by slick stage magicians who fill vast arenas. The Occult, Witchcraft and Magic is packed with authoritative text and a huge and inspired selection of images, some chosen from unusual sources, including some of the best-known representations of magic and the occult from around the world spanning ancient to modern times.

Book Synopsis Literary Self-fashioning in Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz by : Frederick Luciani
Download or read book Literary Self-fashioning in Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz written by Frederick Luciani and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a close reading of selected poetic, dramatic, and prose works by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1651-1695), with the intent of elucidating ways in which this important colonial Mexican intellectual and literary figure created a textual self through her writing. The book analyzes Sor Juana's complex, varied, and strategic process of literary self-fashioning, the self-promotional and self-protective functions that it served, and its consequences for readers of her and subsequent generations. The book situates its readings of Sor Juana's work against the background of the arc of her career - its ascent in the 1680s, to its descent and disintegration in the 1690s. The book does not try to reassemble the life of a literary figure, rather, it explores the traces of that figure's process of literary self-fashioning contextually and over time. Illustrated.
