Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Churches of Lancashire He left home in the Summer of 1874 to visit some of the Suffolk churches: On his return to London, whilst walking along Bishopsgate Street, he was suddenly seized With an affection of the heart, and fell. He was carried into the house of a medical man, and revived for a few moments and spoke, and then quietly passed away, in his sixty-seventh year. He was thus engaged in what was to him the study and pleasure of his life up to the very last. Whilst however he was keen and enthusiastic in following this pursuit, he was an active magistrate, and punctually discharged his public duties, especially those of Chairman of the Board Of Guardians and of Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire, in which his estate, Hawarden Castle, was Situated. He was a humble-minded man, Of simple tastes, full Of kindness and thought for others. An Old parishioner said Of him Sir Stephen is as innocent as a lamb. The Editor of this volume had the privilege of meeting him several times, many years ago, at Middleton Rectory, Where he often stayed with Archdeacon durnford (now Bishop of Chichester). The impression he gave the writer of this preface was that of a typical English gentleman, very unassuming, highly cultured, and a most pleasant companion. Sir Stephen's altar tomb is in the chancel of Hawarden church. His only brother pre-deceased him; his eldestsister, the wife of the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, m.p., survives him, and inherits for life Hawarden Castle, which afterwards devolves on the Widow Of her eldest son, the property having passed to her grandson, a minor. Book Synopsis Our Churches and Chapels by : Atticus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The general satisfaction given by the following sketches when originally printed in the Preston Chronicle, combined with a desire, largely expressed, to see them republished, in book form, is the principal excuse offered for the appearance of this volume. Into the various descriptions of churches, chapels, priests, parsons, congregations, &c., which it contains, a lively spirit, which may be objectionable to the phlegmatic, the sad-faced, and the puritanical, has been thrown. But the author, who can see no reason why a "man whose blood is warm within" should "sit like his grandsire cut in alabaster," on any occasion, has a large respect for cheerfulness, and has endeavoured to make palatable, by a little genial humour, what would otherwise have been a heavy enumeration of dry facts. Those who don't care for the gay will find in these sketches the grave; those who prefer vivacity to seriousness will meet with what they want; those who appreciate all will discover each. The solemn are supplied with facts; the facetious with humour; the analytical with criticism. The work embodies a general history of each place of worship in Preston - fuller and more reliable than any yet published; and for reference it will be found valuable, whilst for general reading it will be instructive. The author has done his best to be candid and impartial.

Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention.

Book Synopsis If These Stones Could Talk by : Peter Stanford
Download or read book If These Stones Could Talk written by Peter Stanford and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A heavenly book, elegant and thoughtful. Get one for yourself and one for the church-crawler in your life!' Lucy Worsley Christianity has been central to the lives of the people of Britain and Ireland for almost 2,000 years. It has given us laws, customs, traditions and our national character. From a persecuted minority in Roman Britannia through the 'golden age' of Anglo-Saxon monasticism, the devastating impact of the Vikings, the alliance of church and state after the Norman Conquest to the turmoil of the Reformation that saw the English monarch replace the Pope and the Puritan Commonwealth that replaced the king, it is a tangled, tumultuous story of faith and achievement, division and bloodshed. In If These Stones Could Talk Peter Stanford journeys through England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland to churches, abbeys, chapels and cathedrals, grand and humble, ruined and thriving, ancient and modern, to chronicle how a religion that began in the Middle East came to define our past and shape our present. In exploring the stories of these buildings that are still so much a part of the landscape, the details of their design, the treasured objects that are housed within them, the people who once stood in their pulpits and those who sat in their pews, he builds century by century the narrative of what Christianity has meant to the nations of the British Isles, how it is reflected in the relationship between rulers and ruled, and the sense it gives about who we are and how we live with each other. 'There is no better navigator through the space in which art, culture and spirituality meet than Peter Stanford' Cole Moreton, Independent on Sunday

Nightingale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire Nonconformity, or Sketches, Historical and Descriptive, of the Congregational and Old Presbyterian Churches in the County The present volume covers only a part of the Manchester District of the Lancashire Congregational Union. Yet it has considerably outrun the number of pages at first intended. Some churches may be disappointed because their histories are not more full, but if they will note the number whose histories had to be inserted they will see that greater fulness was not possible. It has been stated repeatedly, in circulars and earlier prefaces, that each volume is complete in itself; but the pressure of space in the present one has compelled me, wherever possible, to ask the reader to consult other volumes for more details. Congregationalism appears in its strength in the part of the county with which this volume deals. The quick, vigorous, and courageous spirit which centres in the great Cottonopolis of Lancashire, has shown itself in continuous aggressive Congregational efi'ort. Whereas at the commence ment of the century, when the Lancashire Congregational Union was born, there were barely half a dozen inconsiderable interests, now there is a large Congregational network in Manchester and neighbourhood, and many of the churches have both wealth, position, and numbers on their side. The story is not without incidents of a humiliating character, but on the whole it is full of encouragement, and it shows what great possibilities there are in Congregationalism, when it commands the loyalty of its own friends.
