Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Second Parish Church (Unitarian) Marlborough, Massachusetts During these years when there was only one church in the town, and when it is difficult to divorce the religious history from that whichwas secular, this state of feeling is markedly shown by the troubles incident to settling a town minister. On one occasion a period of five years elapsed before a pastor could be found, and on another a period of seven years was necessary. Not only did the people find it hard to agree, but in four or five instances, when a call had been extended, there would be a declination. Such had become the reputation of the town for rival ries and divisions, that the candidate, acting also on the advice of neighboring ministers who had been consulted, did not dare to venture on the settlement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Early History of the First Parish, Sharon, Massachusetts: A Sermon, Preached on the Occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Formation of the Church, July 6, 1890 The history of a parish or church is, to a large extent, the history of the men and women of whom it is composed, for their individuality enters into it as the largest element in determining its character, and in shaping the events in its existence. It cannot rise above their level of conduct and aspiration, nor can its real life be other than that which grows out of the genuine beliefs of its members. The country church may offer little that is of special interest to the consideration of the historian; but out of it the true life of the community is being shaped to no small extent. In its own way it does as true a work, and a work quite as important, as that which is accomplished by the city church amid more conspicuous surroundings. It may be said of it, however, that it comes closer to the heart of the people, is more to them in the shaping of their characters, than the city church ever can be, large or popular as it may be or widely famed. Whoever would know the real history of New England, and that which is most characteristic in the lives of its people, must turn to the parishes nestled all over the country, and study the minute details of their old and musty records. Nothing wonderful will he find; but he will come upon that which has made the people of New England what they are, as he can nd it nowhere else. He will find independence of thought, high moral purpose, integrity of character, sturdy love of liberty, and a manly refusal to submit to the dictation of priest or king. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the importance of Congregationalism in early Massachusetts has engaged historians' attention for generations, this study is the first to approach the Puritan experience in Congregational church government from the perspective of both the pew and the pulpit. For the past decade, author James F. Cooper, Jr. has immersed himself in local manuscript church records. These previously untapped documents provide a fascinating glimpse of lay-clerical relations in colonial Massachusetts, and reveal that ordinary churchgoers shaped the development of Congregational practices as much as the clerical and elite personages who for so long have populated histories of this period. Cooper's new findings will both challenge existing models of church hierarchy and offer a new dimension to our understanding of the origins of New England democracy. Refuting the idea of clerical predominance in the governance of colonial Massachusetts churches, Cooper shows that the laity were both informed and empowered to rule with ministers, rather than beneath them. From the outset of the Congregational experiment, ministers articulated--and lay people embraced--principles of limited authority, higher law, and free consent in the conduct of church affairs. These principles were codified early on in the Cambridge Platform, which the laity used as their standard in resisting infringements upon their rights. By neglecting the democratic components of Congregationalism, Cooper argues, scholars have missed the larger political significance of the movement. Congregational thought and practice in fact served as one indigenous seedbed of several concepts that would later flourish during the Revolutionary generation, including the notions that government derives its legitimacy from the voluntary consent of the governed, that governors should be chosen by the governed, that rulers should be accountable to the ruled, and that constitutional checks should limit both the governors and the people. By examining the development of church government through the perspective of lay-clerical interchange, Cooper comes to a fresh understanding of the sometimes noble, sometimes sordid, and sometimes rowdy nature of church politics. His study casts new light upon Anne Hutchinson and the "Antinomian Controversy," the Cambridge Platform, the Halfway Covenant, the Reforming Synod of 1679, and the long-standing debate over Puritan "declension." Cooper argues that, in general, church government did not divide Massachusetts culture along lay-clerical lines, but instead served as a powerful component of a popular religion and an ideology whose fundamentals were shared by churchgoers and most ministers throughout much of the colonial era. His is a book that will interest students of American culture, religion, government, and history.
