Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in the Maryland Colony The question of who was tolerant in the Maryland colony in matters of religion has long been a subject of dispute. To day the Catholic points with boasting pride to the annals of Maryland and claims that they are conclusive evidence in favor of his tolerant spirit, while on the other hand the Protestant ever seeks to. Find some fallacy by which he may represent them otherwise or at least construe them in such manner as to enhance his own argument or conviction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious History of Maryland: Maryland Not a Roman Catholic Colony, Religious Toleration Not an Act of Roman Catholic Legislation, Being the Substance of a Lecture Delivered Before the Guild of All Saints Church, Baltimore The perversions of history which come before us with all the assurance of truth, are both hurtful and difficult of correction. They mislead successive generations, deceiving their judgment and shaping their action. Tradition and myth form a large part of what men call history; and human selfishness, credulity, and prejudice, transmute them into the solidity of well-accredited facts. No sphere of human thought is so prolific of such misleading as the religious history of individuals and nations. Often the opinion of many generations respecting some historical character or action is utterly away from the truth; because ignorance or prejudice has misstated the facts of the case; and most persons are content to accept the current view, without questioning its accuracy. In this way history is manufactured from falsehood or fancy, while frequent and confident repetition of the same lie will often silence the timid remonstrant, and confirm in error the doubtful questioner. The good people of Maryland, in common with a large part of our whole nation, and thinking people everywhere, have been accustomed to receive, as an unquestionable fact, an assertion respecting the early history of Maryland, its settlement and government, which has no foundation in point of fact; yet has been used to mislead the ignorant, and silence the honest inquirer after truth. The error in question has been incorporated into our school-books, asserted in our newspapers, reiterated by politicians, in the interest of partisan discussion, and preached from pulpit and rostrum, until nearly our whole people give it credence, and regard the man who would call it in question as either wanting in knowledge, or blinded by prejudice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Liberty: In Maryland and Rhode Island First, then, what did Williams teach on the sub ject of religious liberty? Candid criticism must admit that so far as his words go, he unmistakably preached absolute full freedom of conscience from civil inter ference, although here and there we notice a slight shading of opposite color. In his Bloody Tenent Made More Bloody (written as a defense of his Bloody Tenent of Persecution published in he writes: As it would be confusion for the Church to censure such matters and acts of such persons as belong not to the Church; so it is confusion for the State to punish spiritual offences, for they are not within the sphere of civil jurisdiction. The Civil State and magistrate are merely and essentially civil, and, therefore, cannot reach (without transgressing the bounds of civility) to judge in matters spiritual, which are of another sphere and nature than civility is. Mr. Arthur Sullivan Browne, Register of Rock Creek Parish has shown his active cooperation through out the years, and the materials to be published in Vol. III will more fully show the results of his interest. To all those mentioned and to the various other Church and County officers and to all the friends who have assisted in making this volume possible, including my wife who extensively assisted in the preparation of the index, and to the Lancaster Press, Inc., printers, I express most cordial thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Toleration, or Sketches of the Early History of Maryland, to the Year 1650 But he records - and it forms a beautiful introduction to our religious history - that during the voyage of exploration, our order was daily to have Prayer with a Psalm. Thus early, as we are here shown, two hun dred and forty-six years ago, when the shores of the Chesapeake were occupied by the wild Indians - and they pagans - and its waters for the first time wafted on their surface the bark of the white man - did prayers and hymns of praise ascend in the name of jesus to the living Gon. It was then, for the first time, that the shores and waters of our noble Bay te sounded with the teachings of God's Holy Word, the Bible, and with the Services of His Worship. These men, the then Governor of Virginia, and those with him, were not unmindful in the wilderness and on the deep, of the god Who has all things in His hands. They were Christ ians, Church of England Christians, who had the book of Common Prayer. They were men who prayed to god daily, and daily offered to Him praise. Thus, with the very first sail of our anglo-saxon race, that ever caught the breeze upon the waters of the Chesapeake - came the Bible and the book of Common Prayer - and men of stout Christian hearts to use them. Cur order was daily to have Prayer and a Psalm at which solemnity the poor savages much wondered. It was indeed, under the circumstances, a solemnity. It was no light thing, nor was it done in a corner. The Indian himself saw - and seeing it he wondered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
