Book excerpt: In this study the interactions are traced between the urge for freedom of the Namibian people and the Christian ideology brought to Namibia partly by the Oorlam-Nama commando groups from the Cape, and partly by the German and Finnish Lutheran Missions. From the very beginning of European colonial conquest, the various population groups in Namibia started their fight for freedom from oppression and for human rights. In this struggle, Christian ideology was an important source of inspiration despite the intention of the European Mission to strengthen European imperialism by their concept of a "Christian European civilization". Many indigenous churchgoers lost confidence in the Missions, and provided an early impetus to the courageous stand taken in the 1960s by the Lutheran Churches in support of the Namibian liberation struggle. The study is framed by the secular, historical events during colonial occupation; and different aspects of European imperialism are traced. The author is a Swedish theologian and former missionary, who has close connections with Swapo, the Namibian political party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1960, SWAPO of Nami-bia led the organised and later armed struggle for indepen-dence. In late 1989, the libera-tion movement was finally elected to power under United Nations supervision as the legitimate government. When the Republic of Namibia was proclaimed on 21 March 1990, the long and bitter struggle for sovereignty came to an end. This volume takes stock of emerging trends in the country's political culture since independence. The contributions, mainly by authors from Namibia and Southern Africa who supported the anti-colonial movements, critically explore the achieve-ments and shortcomings that have been part of liberation in Namibia. Henning Melber was Director of the Namibian Economic Policy Research Unit (NEPRU) in Windhoek between 1992 and 2000 and has been Research Director at The Nordic Africa Institute since then. He coordinates the research project on 'Liberation and Democracy in Southern Africa', of which this volume is part.

Book excerpt: The author explores the African symbiosis of religion and politics in Namibia. The first chapter describes the collision between the land's first settlers, the Africans, and its second settlers, the Eiropean. Its moral consequence was a horrifying genocide. The second chapter surveys the mix of religion and politics that determined the character of both Africans and Europeans over several generations. European missionaries openly sought to transform the substance of African culture by replacing traditional religions with the biblical faith. The third chapter outlines the process by which a distinctly Namibian ethic has come into being. Unaffected by sectarian tradition that would sharply separate the religious community from the sociaopolitical order, the leadership of the churches found it possible to discern the presence of a divine call for civil justice in worldly affairs.
