Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main portion of this paper describes the implementation of the British Columbia Long-term Soil Productivity project, which is based on a comprehensive model that will provide information about the relative effects of soil compaction and the removal of site organic matter on tree growth. It reviews the history of the project and the scientific basis for the project studies, then describes the project sites and plot layouts, harvesting and site treatment methods, conifer regeneration studies, and three ancillary studies on the following subjects: ectomycorrhizal fungi, root development, and seedling nutrition; soil fauna; and soil atmosphere.

Book Synopsis Successional Changes in Plant Species Diversity in Forest Chronosequences on Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia by : Michael William Ryan

This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing concern regarding species management and conservation in coastal forests of British Columbia, Canada, is how conversion of old-growth forests to managed forests affects the structure, function, and species diversity of ecosystems, and whether converted forests will eventually recover to a state that mimics many of the characteristic traits of old-growth stands. In this study, the authors investigated successional changes in vascular and nonvascular plant species diversity in the fragmented forest landscapes on southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, using the chronosequence approach. They were particularly interested in understanding how the conversion of old-growth forests into secondary-growth forests would affect the plant-species diversity and what implications these results would have in terms of management in this region.--Document.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was undertaken to review the ecological role of woody debris in temperate forest eco-systems, with particular emphasis on methods of estimating amounts and turnover rates, and the effects of logging and silvicultural activities on the amounts and behaviour of woody debris; to identify proposed or ongoing research with the Ministry of Forests related to the role of woody debris in the forest of British Columbia; to determine what information is available for the forest types of B.C.; and to identify forest types for which information on quantities or functions of woody debris is lacking and to discuss the research required to fill these gaps.

Book Synopsis A Method for Estimating Canopy Openness, Effective Leaf Area Index, and Photosynthetically Active Photon Flux Density Using Hemispherical Photography and Computerized Image Analysis Techniques by : G. W. Frazer
Download or read book A Method for Estimating Canopy Openness, Effective Leaf Area Index, and Photosynthetically Active Photon Flux Density Using Hemispherical Photography and Computerized Image Analysis Techniques written by G. W. Frazer and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemispherical canopy photography is an indirect method for measuring various components of forest canopy structure and solar radiation flux within and below forest canopies. The method utilizes a 180-degree fisheye-lens camera to capture and record the position, size, and shape of openings or gaps in a forest canopy. During late summer 1995, eight sites on southern Vancouver Island were intensively sampled using hemispherical photographic methods. This document describes the general theory, approach, and analytical tools associated with hemispherical canopy photography and computerized image analysis in the context of this research. As a result, a technical protocol has been devised that can be adopted, modified, and improved upon by those interested in using hemispherical techniques for similar research initiatives. Recommendations are made to improve the quality and reliability of future hemispherical image analysis systems. Appendices include information on measurement of fisheye lens distortion and the effect on the calculation of gap fraction magnitude and distribution, and a model for estimating percent open sky and leaf area index.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Forest Management by : John L. Innes
Download or read book Sustainable Forest Management written by John L. Innes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Forest Management provides the necessary material to educate students about forestry and the contemporary role of forests in ecosystems and society. This comprehensive textbook on the concept and practice of sustainable forest management sets the standard for practice worldwide. Early chapters concentrate on conceptual aspects, relating sustainable forestry management to international policy. In particular, they consider the concept of criteria and indicators and how this has determined the practice of forest management, taken here to be the management of forested lands and of all ecosystems present on such lands. Later chapters are more practical in focus, concentrating on the management of the many values associated with forests. Overall the book provides a major new synthesis which will serve as a textbook for undergraduates of forestry as well as those from related disciplines such as ecology or geography who are taking a course in forests or natural resource management.
Book Synopsis Earth System Responses to Global Change by : Harold A. Mooney
Download or read book Earth System Responses to Global Change written by Harold A. Mooney and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1993-10-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the differences and similarities in the earth system components - the ocean, atmosphere, and the land - between western portions of the northern and southern Western Hemispheres, past, present, and projected. The book carefully examines the physical and biological patterns and responses of given biomes, or ecological communities in the two regions. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship of physicial and biotic systems to biogeochemistry and the evolving biota patterns of land margins and surfaces. The text concludes with an assessment of the direct impact on humans on these biomes, giving full consideration to the land-use drivers of global change.* Integrated view of earth system processes on the west coasts of North and South America
