Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles of the Maltmen Craft in Glasgow: 1605-1879 Were it not going beyond the remit of the Members, the suggestion might here be made that anyone who is desirous of pursuing the study of the Craft Guilds, both ancient and modern, might profitably read Lugo Brentano on Guilds, a book which, though difficult to be got at, would well repay the trouble. Books easier to be had are the standard histories of Hallam, F roude, Freeman, and Toulmin Smith's Notes. There have also been several Royal Commission Reports on European Guilds, and particularly the London ones or Liveries, which are well worthy of perusal. However, the reading of the modern 1891 work by the Rev. Dr. J. Malet Lambert, m.a., on Two Thousand Years of Guild Life, while it gives an outline of the history and development of the Guild system from early times, might be sufficient for ordinary purposes. The word Guild has various etymological forms, and may be taken to mean a payment or contribution; hence, those who paid into a company for certain purposes had the title of membership, and became known as Guild brethren. In Scotland the name Guild has become almost exclusively applied to associations formed by the merchant class of the community, while the Craft Associations are designated Trade Incorporations. Another kindred subject, but one which can only be noticed in passing, is that of Burghs in Scotland, and no better reference could be made to the Burghal system of Scotland than that referred to in The History and Poetry of the Scottish Border, by the learned and eminent Professor of Logic in the University of Glasgow, the late John Veitch. The Burghs gave Burghal privileges, and concentrated bodies that otherwise could not authoritatively have met. The Burgesses thereof formed associations for industrial, moral, and benevolent purposes, such as the fourteen Trade Incorporations of Glasgow, amongst the foremost of which is the Maltmen - nu institution that has taken a no mean part in the history of Glasgow, whether its deeds be looked for in its days of special privileges or since that time.
