Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dean Paul Pearson was born in 1964 and is a native of Wichita, Kansas. Born number ten of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, he developed a passion for reading and the great outdoors as means of escape from a crowded farmhouse. Also, being raised on a forty-acre farm on the outskirts of the city allowed Dean, his siblings, cousins, and friends to enjoy acres upon acres of land in which to explore and share in many adventures together. While co-teaching a high school reading class, he began telling his students about his childhood adventures before reading exams. The students enjoyed the stories, which seemed to relieve some of their test anxiety. Naturally, the students began to request a story before each exam. The enjoyment the students received from the stories inspired Dean to write them down...and thus we have volume one of The Farmhouse Chronicles.

Book excerpt: Book 1 of the Precious Memories' series, entitled "Little White Farmhouse in Iowa", is the first of three books about the childhood of Katherine Kroontje (Vastenhout), a farm girl of Iowa and, later, Minnesota. Book 1 describes farm life in Iowa during the depression years of the 1930s, before such luxuries as indoor plumbing, electric lights, and telephones -- while beds were still made from corn husks, and clothes sewn from feed sacks. It begins with Katherine's birth exactly at midnight of June 3, 1930, during an horrific summer thunderstorm, and ends with the "Blizzard of the Century", the Armistice Day's Blizzard of 1940. (We've had people tell us they didn't believe everything in there until they checked it out for themselves!!) Book 2, "Little Yellow Farmhouse in Iowa", continues these Iowan farm childhood stories with Katherine's years in a second little farmhouse, colored yellow, with a focus on the World War II years and fascinating details of Uncle Bill Tilstra's involvement in the Japanese front of that war. It begins with the traumatic move to the second house and ends with the exciting move to a third house in Minnesota, one with electricity! Book 3, Strangers in Minnesota, about the last four years of Katherine's years at home, not only chronicles the loneliness of a move to another state, but becomes her romance, as well, while leading us into a third Amerian era, that of the Korean War.

Book excerpt: In 1919, against a backdrop of a long history of anti-Asian nativism, a handful of Japanese families established Cortez Colony in a bleak pocket of the San Joachin Valley. Valerie Matsumoto chronicles conflicts within the community as well as obstacles from without as the colonists responded to the challenges of settlement, the setbacks of the Great Depression, the hardships of World War II internment, and the opportunities of postwar reconstruction. Tracing the evolution of gender and family roles of members of Cortez as well as their cultural, religious, and educational institutions, she documents the persistence and flexibility of ethnic community and demonstrates its range of meaning from geographic location and web of social relations to state of mind.

Book excerpt: "But Roderick's reverence for natural materials and his appreciation of traditional Japanese and Shinto crafsmanship eventually got the better of him. Before long, carpenters were hoisting massive beams, laying wide wooden floors, and attaching the split-bamboo ceiling. In just forty days they rebuilt the house on a hill overlooking Kamakura, the ancient capital of Japan. Working together they renovated the farmhouse, adding features such as floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and a modern kitchen, bath, and toilet." "John Roderick's architectural memoir Minka tells the compelling and often poignant story of how one man fell in love with the people, culture, and ancient building traditions of Japan, and reminds us all about the importance of craftsmanship and the meaning of place and home in the process."--BOOK JACKET.
