This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers involved in the cytogenetics and molecular genetics of human tumors will welcome this comprehensive overview of the type of aberrations that chromosome 12 presents in human solid tumors. The authors study the implications for a cytogenetic subtyping of the tumors involved and strategies for identifying the molecular changes which underlie the karyotypic alterations. The aberrations of chromosome 12 which the book deals with are very frequent chromosomal alterations in human tumors occuring in frequent benign mesenchymal tumors, such as uterine leiomyomas and lipomas, and in tumors of epithelial origin, such as pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands.

Download or read book Abnormal Chromosomes written by Sverre Heim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the past, present, and future of cancer cytogenetics In Abnormal Chromosomes: The Past, Present, and Future of Cancer Cytogenetics, globally renowned researchers Drs. Sverre Heim and Felix Mitelman deliver a state-of-the-art review of how cancer cytogenetic analyses have contributed to an improved understanding of tumorigenesis as well as to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. The book also discusses how cytogenetics – the study of chromosomes - meets, interacts with, and cross-fertilizes other investigative technologies, including molecular somatic cell genetics. The book provides an impetus to think more deeply about the role chromosomes, and their abnormalities, play in health and disease, especially in neoplastic disorders. From which origins did cytogenetics develop? How did the finding of acquired chromosomal abnormalities in cells of leukemias and solid tumors influence our understanding of cancer as a biological process? How was information of this nature put to good use in the clinical management of cancer patients? Abnormal Chromosomes: The Past, Present, and Future of Cancer Cytogenetics offers readers: A thorough introduction to ancient theories of disease, the advent of cellular pathology, and how a scientific interest in chromosomes developed Comprehensive exploration of the conceptual importance of Theodor Boveri and his somatic mutation theory of cancer A detailed chronological resume of cancer cytogenetic discoveries during the 20th century In-depth discussions of the role of chromosome abnormalities, oncogenes, and tumor suppressor genes in leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors, together with a survey of what chromosome analyses have revealed about the clonal evolution of neoplastic cell populations A discussion of the importance of pathogenetic classifications of neoplastic diseases, the role chromosome abnormalities play in this context, and which technological breakthroughs can be expected in chromosome-oriented cancer research Abnormal Chromosomes: The Past, Present, and Future of Cancer Cytogenetics was written for everyone with a scientific or clinical interest in cancer, especially how acquired chromosome abnormalities lead to neoplastic transformation. The book teaches how cytogenetic analyses contribute to a better understanding of tumorigenesis, but also how the finding of specific chromosome aberrations can be crucial for the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of cancer patients.

Book excerpt: This edited book, Chromosomal Abnormalities - A Hallmark Manifestation of Genomic Instability, contains a series of chapters highlighting several aspects related to the generation of chromosomal abnormalities in genetic material. We are extremely grateful to the authors who had contributed with valuable information about the role of genomic instability in pathological disorders as well as in the evolution process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of discovery, within the EU, of scientific aspects of cancer research and of developments in the clinical field is so rapid that it is sometimes difficult to keep abreast. This brief overview attempts to highlight some of the advances in the field, as part of BIOMED programme funded research and specific results due to the co-operative spirit established by the scientific community. It is particularly worth noting the financial investment of 35 million ECU in the current programme, has d as a catalyst in attracting a large number of Member States funded research in pooling their collective knowledge base.

This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume began with an invitation from the publishers to edit a volume of EXS on Cancer. This invitation undoubtedly derived from my articles in Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences in 2002 and 2003 on the relationships between the morphology, aetiology and pathogenesis of tumours, especially in relation to genetic instability. After many years of teaching the theories of c- cer in undergraduate medical school courses, it seemed to me that the variably chaotic histopathologic features of tumours parallel in some way, the variably unstable genomes of tumour cells, which were being discovered in the 1990s. Thus the title of the volume has come to include morphology, carcinogenesis and genetic instability. The invitation came while I was working with Herrn Dr. med. Hubertus Jersmann (MD Düsseldorf, PhD, now Senior Lecturer in Medicine of the University of Adelaide) and Professor Brian Coghlan (Emeritus Professor of German, the University of Adelaide), on the work of the nineteenth century cancer pathologists, especially David Paul von Hansemann (1858–1920). With the delivery of the manuscripts from the authors of the chapters, it became obvious that a background chapter for the volume could include some of the material which we had “uncovered” together. Because of this, chapter 1 is authored by the three of us, and the “new” material figures prominently.
