Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Nibble loves munching dandelion leaves. And he's not alone. All the guinea pigs in Dandeville eat dandelion leaves for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But no-one seems to do anything when the dandelions begin to dwindle. They just carry on munching. In fact the guinea pigs of Dandeville are heading for eco-disaster . . . But that's where Christopher Nibble steps in. He discovers the last dandelion growing outside his bedroom window and, rather than eat it, he does his horticultural research in the library and then nurtures the dandelion patiently until it has produced a perfect head of tiny seeds. Then he blows the seeds from a hill high over Dandeville so that each dandelion seedling takes root and grows into a new plant. Charlotte Middleton has illustrated her witty, quirky story with charming collage illustrations and her guinea pigs are the most endearing, funky little characters you are ever likely to meet.

Now Christopher is the greenest guinea pig in Dandeville. He's ready to rescue the town's rubbish, turning old into new, in this story full of pedal power! Inspired by his own recycled bicycle, Christopher asks Miss Borrower in the library, Mr Rosetti at the café, and Madame Choux from the bakery if he can take what they are throwing away. Then, with the help of his sister Poppy and their friend Posie, Christopher sets about making things out of old newspapers, empty coffee jars, and stale bread. Christopher gets on his bike to deliver the results around the town and so in turn inspires the other guinea pigs in Dandeville to start recycling. Book Synopsis The History of the Caribby-islands, Viz. Barbados, St Christophers, St Vincents, Martinico, Dominico, Barbouthos, Monserrat, Mevis, Antego, &c. in All XXVIII. by : César de Rochefort
Download or read book The History of the Caribby-islands, Viz. Barbados, St Christophers, St Vincents, Martinico, Dominico, Barbouthos, Monserrat, Mevis, Antego, &c. in All XXVIII. written by César de Rochefort and published by . This book was released on 1666 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early study of the Caribbean is an English translation of a French work published anonymously in Rotterdam in 1658 under the title Histoire naturelle et morale des iles Antilles de l'Amerique (Natural and moral history of the Antilles). The original author was Charles de Rochefort (1605-83), who identified himself in subsequent editions of the book. Not much is known about de Rochefort. The available evidence suggests he was a Protestant pastor sent to be a minister or chaplain to French-speaking Protestants in the Caribbean. He based his work on his own observations and the writings of previous authors, notably the Dominican priest Jean-Baptiste Du Terte (1610-87). De Rochefort's work is in two parts, the first dealing with the geographical features and the second with the people of the Caribbean. The islands covered are listed and briefly described in chapters 3-5 of Book I. De Rochefort was interested in indigenous peoples and languages, and the book includes a detailed chapter on the Apalachee Indians as well as a vocabulary of the Caraïbe language prepared by Raymond Breton (1609-79), a Jesuit priest sent by Cardinal Richelieu (with Du Terte) to Guadeloupe in the 1630s. The work contains a few illustrations, mainly of animals, fish, and shells.
Book Synopsis Popularizing Anthropology by : Jeremy McClancy
Download or read book Popularizing Anthropology written by Jeremy McClancy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology written for a popular audience is the most neglected branch of the discipline. In the 1980s postmodernist anthropologists began to explore the literary and reflective aspects of their work. Popularizing Anthropology advances that trend by looking at a key but previously marginalized genre of anthropology. The contributors, who are well known anthropologists, explore such themes as: why so many anthropologists are women; how the Japanese have reacted to Ruth Benedict; why Margaret Mead became so successful; how the French media promote Levi-Strauss and Louis Dumont; Why Bruce Chatwin tells us more about Aboriginals than many anthropologists in Australia; how personal accounts of fieldwork have evolved since the 1950s; how to write a personal account of fieldwork. Popularizing Anthropology unearths a submerged tradition within anthropology and reveals that, from the beginning, anthropologists have looked beyond the boundaries of the academy for their listeners. It aims to establish the popularization of the discipline as an illuminating topic of investigation in its own right, arguing that it is not an irrelevant appendage to the main body of the subject but has always been an integral part of it.
Book Synopsis The Wild Silk Moths of North America by : Paul M. Tuskes
Download or read book The Wild Silk Moths of North America written by Paul M. Tuskes and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saturniidae are among the largest and showiest moths in North America. This comprehensive work covers the life history and taxonomy of a hundred species and subspecies of these Lepidoptera. The beautiful adults and larvae of all species are illustrated in thirty color plates, which are supported by line drawings of cocoons, distribution maps, and photographs of behavior. More than a natural history guide, this book includes chapters in population biology, life history strategies, disease and parasitoids, and the importance of silk moths of human culture. The systematic account emphasizes genetic differences among populations and the process of speciation and presents new information on experimental hybridization and life histories. For the student, researcher, and naturalist, here is practical information on collecting, rearing, and conducting original research. The entire text is referenced to an extensive bibliography.
