Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay is conceived as a critical exposition of the central issues that figure in the ongoing conversation between Logical Positivists and neo Positivists on the one hand and Christian apologists on the other. My expository aim is to isolate and to describe the main issues that have emer ged in the extended discussion between men of Positivistic turn of mind and men sympathetic to the claims of Christianity. My critical aim is to select typical, influential stands that have been taken on each of these issues, to assess their viability, and to isolate certain dilemmas which discussion of these issues has generated. I am convinced that the now commonly rejected verifiability theory of meaning is very commonly misunderstood and has been rejected by and large for the wrong reasons. Before it is cast off-if it is to be cast off-what is needed is a reconsideration of that theory and of the objections that its several formulations have elicited. Furthermore, at least partially because of a misconstruing of the verifiability doctrine, there have been some interesting-though in my opinion unsuccessful-claims advanced about the testability-status of sentences expressive of Christian belief. Moreover, in their haste to vindicate Christianity, some apologists have been fairly cavalier, in my opinion, about what "Christianity" involves. This volume offers what I hope will be a clear statement and analysis of the principle points at issue between Positivism and Christianity, together with my own assessment of where the argument stands now.

Book excerpt: Throughout its entire history, the discipline of anthropology has been perceived as undermining, or even discrediting, Christian faith. Many of its most prominent theorists have been agnostics who assumed that ethnographic findings and theories had exposed religious beliefs to be untenable. E. B. Tylor, the founder of the discipline in Britain, lost his faith through studying anthropology. James Frazer saw the material that he presented in his highly influential work, The Golden Bough, as demonstrating that Christian thought was based on the erroneous thought patterns of 'savages.' On the other hand, some of the most eminent anthropologists have been Christians, including E. E. Evans-Pritchard, Mary Douglas, Victor Turner, and Edith Turner. Moreover, they openly presented articulate reasons for how their religious convictions cohered with their professional work. Despite being a major site of friction between faith and modern thought, the relationship between anthropology and Christianity has never before been the subject of a book-length study. In this groundbreaking work, Timothy Larsen examines the point where doubt and faith collide with anthropological theory and evidence.

Book Synopsis Early German Positivism by : Frederick C. Beiser
Download or read book Early German Positivism written by Frederick C. Beiser and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early German Positivism, Frederick C. Beiser explores a much neglected or forgotten period of the history of philosophy: the history of German positivism from 1860 to 1907. Almost all studies of positivism revolve around the Vienna Circle. Instead, this study covers positivism even before the first Vienna circle (1907). Beiser delves into figures almost completely forgotten in the German and Anglo-American worlds: Theodor Gomperz (1832-1912), Eugen Dühring (1833-1921), Ernst Laas (1837-1885), and Friedrich Jodl (1849-1914); he also examines Ernst Mach (1838-1916) and Richard Avenarius (1843-1896), who are much better known but contemporaries of these thinkers. Several positivist themes unite these thinkers: rejection of the synthetic a priori; opposition to pessimism; a philosophy of monism, naturalism and historicism; and the belief that the highest good can be achieved only under the guidance of science. Early German Positivism aims to place positivism in a wider intellectual context, which goes back to the Enlightenment and the opposition to the Christian tradition.

Book Synopsis The Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity by : Dennis Hiebert
Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity written by Dennis Hiebert and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity examines the intersection of the sociology of religion – a long-standing focus of sociology as a discipline – and Christianity – the world’s largest religion. An internationally representative and thematically comprehensive collection, it analyzes both the sociology of Christianity and Christian approaches to sociology, with attention to the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant branches of Christianity. An authoritative, state-of-the-art review of current research, it is organized into five inter-connected thematic sections, considering the overlapping emergence of both the Christian religion and the social science, the conceptualization of and engagement with Christianity by sociological theory, the ways in which Christianity shapes and is shaped by various social institutions, the manner in which Christianity resists and promotes various forms of social change, and the identification, diagnosis, and correction of social problems by sociology and Christianity. This volume is an invaluable collection for scholars and advanced students, with special appeal for those working in the fields of sociology and social theory, as well as religious studies and theology

Book Synopsis CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS by : Francis Beattie
Download or read book CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS written by Francis Beattie and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally written in 1903 by Francis Beattie, "Christian Apologetics" is a comprehensive examination of the rational foundations of the Christian faith. This treatise delves into the philosophical, historical, and theological underpinnings of Christianity, offering a robust defense against various critiques and alternative worldviews. This updated edition has been carefully revised to make Beattie's profound work accessible to contemporary readers. The original text, rich in depth but laden with archaic language and complex structures, has been modernized for clarity and readability. Outdated scientific and philosophical references have been updated to reflect current understanding, and spelling, grammar, and syntax errors have been corrected. Moreover, we have replaced the archaic Bible translations with the Updated American Standard Version (UASV) to maintain the integrity of Beattie’s arguments while ensuring accuracy and readability. In this volume, readers will find a systematic exploration of key apologetic themes, including the nature and scope of apologetics, the philosophical foundations of theism, the psychological aspects of religious belief, and the critical examination of antitheistic theories such as atheism, materialism, and agnosticism. Each chapter is designed to build upon the last, creating a cohesive and compelling case for the rationality and necessity of the Christian faith. This edition retains the scholarly rigor of the original work while making it more accessible to today's readers. It is an essential resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the intellectual defense of Christianity. By bridging the gap between historical and contemporary thought, this revised edition of "Christian Apologetics" ensures that Beattie's invaluable insights continue to enlighten and inspire.
