Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Japan: 1859-1883 Christianization of Japan does not simply mean a conversion of heathens, nor an uplifting of the ignorant to a higher enjoyment of civilized life as is often supposed by the American public; but it involves a far wider question. It is, in short, an attempt to reconstruct the Oriental idea upon the basis of the Occidental principle, or to implant the seeds of Christian truth into already cultivated and fertilized soil, or, in other words, it is another crusade of the western nations against the Asiatic nations in a different form and from different motives. The struggle between the Orient and the Occident is nothing new. For centuries the East and West regarded each other as irreconcilable enemies, and the borders of Europe were a permanent battlefield between these two antagonistic forces. While they were thus struggling with each other there sprang up two distinct civilizations, each differing diametrically from the other. One, starting from the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates, went westward through Europe and America and developed into the Christian religion. The other, rising at the foot of the Himalaya, moved eastward to the extremity of Asia and appeared in Buddhism and Confucianism. The one characterizes a free state; the other, an absolute monarchy. One is a positive principle; the other, a negative principle. These two diametrically opposed principles, the twins of the world's history, which fought for their supremacy for so many centuries without ever coming to peaceful terms, happen to meet again in Japan today after each has completed its civilization in its own direction. What will be the outcome of this second meeting? Will it be the renewal of the old endless struggle? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith in Japan The aim of this little volume is not to give a complete account of missionary work in Japan, still less to provide a general description of the country or the people, but to afford to the general reader a sufficient introduction to both to enable him to appreciate the work which the Holy Catholic Church of Japan has already accomplished, and its prospects of development in the immediate future. By far the greater number of professing Christians in Japan at the present time are attached to the Russian or the Roman Missions or to Missions started by various Non conformist Bodies. It is from no desire to create a false impression of the importance, from a numerical standpoint, of the Japan Church that a detailed account of these other Missions has been omitted. The omission is simply due to exigencies of Space. The Rev. Herbert Moore, to whom the Society is indebted for writing this account of its work, was a member of the St. Andrew's Brotherhood, Tokyo, from 1891 to 189 5, and was afterwards a missionary at Kobe for two years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japan Christian Yearbook, 1968 As Sadao Watanabe's special jacket for this 1968 Japan Christian Yearbook indicates, this is a special issue. It is a special issue for two reasons: 1) It commemorates the Centennial observance of the Meiji Restoration of 1868; 2) It is the first Japan Christian Yearbook: to be prepared and issued under joint Protestant and Roman Catholic auspices. In connection with the Centennial observance of the Meiji Restoration, which restored Japan as a strong and united nation within the world's community of nations, an attempt has been made by the Editors and Editorial Committee of the 1968 Japan Christian Yearbook to: 1) review and analyze the planting and development of Christianity in Japan; 2) Show the role which Christianity has played in Japan's modernization; and, 3) evaluate the place of Christianity in both present and future Japanese thought and culture. In reference to the second special and unique character of this issue of the Yearbook - its being a product of joint Pro testant and Roman Catholic efforts - the Editorial Committee has from the very beginning rejected any idea of speaking about Protestant or Catholic points of view, no matter how legitimate such a distinction might be theologically or ecclesiastically. In other words, we have resolved to approach our common tasks simply as Christians. This stance has been strengthened by the participation of some' outstanding non-christians in the ecumenical dialogue which is repre sented in these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in Japan: Shintoism Buddhism Christianity Foreign trade, save for some concessions, - accom panied by the severest restrictions, - permitted to the Dutch; no foreigners were allowed to enter, and no natives to leave, the empire; the mission aries were expelled, and Christianity was prohibited under pain of death. The Japanese, as has been said, suspected everybody and shut out the world. Previous to this crisis the English had retired; but when, in 167 3, our country sought to resume friendly relations, the connexion existing between the English and Portuguese courts proved an insuperable obstacle 1 Subsequent overtures made in 1849, were courteously but firmly rejected; though the period of Japan's isolation was, as later events proved, almost at an end. In 1853, the Government of the United States despatched a fleet across the Pacific, under the command of Com modore Perry, to insist upon the surrender of a policy which, it was urged, no one nation of the world had a right to adopt towards the rest. Whether the arguments with which this position was advanced would of themselves have prevailed, is impossible to say; but since it was evident that should words fail, sterner measures would be resorted to, Japan had no choice but to submit. Treaties were accordingly concluded, first with the United States, and subsequently with England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is also a sacred duty for the editor to express his sincere appreciation for the hearty cooperation and help rendered by Christian friends in this country. Different as they may be in their theological, political and social points of view, they are all uhited in trying to describe the events and affairs, religious and otherwise, as objectively and impartially as possible. It is hoped that the articles in this volume will contribute much to the proper understanding and appreciation of Christianity in present day Japan. This year may seem to be a less eventful than the years of the Protestant Centenary (1959) and the World Convention of Christian Education Nevertheless, this has been an eventful year. The significance of the several events must be properly appraised. Mr. Muto is an excellent writ er who gives an unprejudiced observation on social affairs from a Christian point of View. Dr. Kuwada's article on religious freedom will throw much light on our understand ing of the shinto-shrine problem in this country. It is an article worth perusal. Another and much larger work, comprising thirty books, and containing a record of much of the same mythology and history as the Ko-ji-ki, is called the Nikon or Chronicles of J apan.1 It is a composite of various elements derived from numerous different sources, and while it reports in substance the myths and stories of the gods as they are found in the Ko-ji-ki, it makes no mention of that older work and omits some things which the older work records. It gives, however, a num ber and variety of reports of the myths and tra ditions, informing us how, in one ancient writing, it is so and so recorded; in another writing, it is somewhat difierently told. This feature enhances its value for purposes of comparison among the varying traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
