Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Economic Science This volume contains the substance of a course of five Lectures which I delivered last October, at the London School Of Economics, on the In uence of Religious Conceptions upon the Historical Develop ment of Economic Doctrines and Theories. I have been conscious throughout Of my indebtedness to the erudite and suggestive work Of dr.troeltsch, entitled Die Soziallehren der clzn'stlz'c/zen Kitchen and gmmen. For the present I have endeavoured to concentrate attention on the history of Thought, but I hope to supplement the discussion at another time by dealing with the part played by Christianity in helping to form the modern conception Of Social Duty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Economics: A Christian View is an introduction to economics from an explicitly Christian perspective. It maintains that there is no conflict between Christian doctrine and economic science, properly understood. Therefore, Foundations of Economics has three goals: to demonstrate that the foundations of economic laws are derived from a Christian understanding of nature and humanity; to explain basic economic principles of the market economy and apply them to various economic problems, such as poverty and economic development; and to show the relationship between Christian ethics and economic policy. Foundations of Economics: A Christian View accomplishes these goals by rooting the fundamental principles of human action in the Christian doctrines of creation and humanity, and integrating them with the Christian ethic of private property. This volume explains the relevance of economics for fulfilling the cultural mandate set forth in the first two chapters of Genesis, by demonstrating how economics can help us in our task to be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over the earth, without spoiling creation, starving to death, or descending into a barbaric struggle for survival.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Economy: Scientific Management of Men and Things in Relation to God and His Cause I. Work for Christ and men is God's scientific prescription for love of Christ and men. II. God blesses men who serve, as He does not bless men who are served. Some men do tasks in order to do them their way. Such save the-way and rob some worker of God's blessing. III. The men of a parish are like locomotives in a railroad yard. Evangelists and firemen may kindle fires in fireboxes, but there are no dividends until there are definite plans and work-tracks and engineers. IV. The Church long ago learned to add up money. Now it is learning to add up men. V. It is the task of ministers to make men see; of laymen to make men do. Laymen may take up either task, but many feel they ought not to take up the "see," and leave the "do" undone. VI. A man doesn't pray for, Things he doesn't pay for. VII. Coming is getting, and getting without giving is death. Going is growing, and growing with giving is life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Economic Problems, Facts, Principles, Programs: A Discussion Group Text-Book This book, the second of the Social Problem Discussion Series, has a somewhat different form from the first - "What is the Christian View of Work and Wealth?" It contains a running text instead of reference material gathered from a variety of sources. But it is none the less a discussion course. The outline and the manner of treatment have been determined by the committee and the same kind of discussion has gone into the preparation of the course that it is hoped to elicit by means of it. The text has been written with a view not merely to stating facts or declaring opinions, but to laying bare the issues and enabling the group to approach the problems involved in the subject matter. On first thought many of the questions here dealt with seem to be of too technical a nature for popular discussion. What is contemplated, however, is a moral appraisal of the situation presented by industry in the light of our common heritage of ethical ideals. Suggestions to Leaders The leader will doubtless find himself serving the group best if he keeps as much as possible out of its way. He is really the chairman of a meeting. He should not attempt to "put over" any particular point of view, but to see to it that there is fair discussion. To this end, he probably will not wish to take part himself. He will have all he can do if he carries out his duties as chairman, stating the questions, seeing that all sides are represented in the discussion, and summarizing the conclusions. He may find a blackboard of help if he is handling a large group. The chairman will also need to see that the necessary information for intelligent discussion is before the meeting. Book excerpt: Many important contemporary debates cross economics and religion, in turn raising questions about the relationship between the two fields. This book, edited by a leader in the new interdisciplinary field of economics and religion and with contributions by experts on different aspects of the relationship between economics and Christianity, maps the current state of scholarship and points to new directions for the field. It covers the history of the relationship between economics and Christianity, economic thinking in the main Christian traditions, and the role of religion in economic development, as well as new work on the economics of religious behavior and religious markets and topics of debate between economists and theologians. It is essential reading for economists concerned with the foundations of their discipline, historians, moral philosophers, theologians seeking to engage with economics, and public policy researchers and practitioners.

Book excerpt: This poor but precious civilization of ours could yet be rescued from what may appear to many, more and more often, the accelerating onrush of apocalyptic doom. This civilization could be saved--if we earn that. If we are not all to drown, your neighbor too, must learn now to swim. What therefore did you urgently need to know, which I had either neglected to tell you, or, perhaps, had not said clearly enough? What did you require most urgently, that you might rescue us from your neighbor’s folly? A grander strategic perspective, a more alluring set of programs of economic reconstruction? I thought that was not where my omission lay. What your neighbor required, most urgently, was not instruction on what to think, but remedial assistance in the matter of how to think. One must never make apology for saying even unpleasant things which are needed, most urgently, to be said. One need not apologize for saying that as well as possible--if no one else were saying it better. I wish devoutly it were better; but nonetheless, it had been better said than not. Now, my friends have elected, very kindly, to reissue these three published philosophical writings together, in a single volume. May it enrich you and so give you pleasure. I can do no better but share with you something slightly better than that which I have to give. --Lyndon Larouche

Book excerpt: Any attempt to use the Bible as a basis for addressing contemporary economic issues needs to recognise the fundamental differences in underlying philosophy between economic theory and Christian belief. Neo-classical economic theory embodies a view of the world and of human nature, derived from the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, which has become immensely influential in recent times. 'Economic man' is a rational, independent being, set in an environment of scarcity, but able to improve his welfare by transactions in a market economy. This 'anthropology' is explained and examined systematically in this book, following broadly the pattern of an economics textbook, and drawing on some recent work in methodology. In each chapter, a second part presents a contrasting view of the same subject matter drawn from the Bible as interpreted by contemporary scholars. This gives a radically different account of human life and well-being, centred on the community and its relationship with God, in which prosperity, abundance and hope for the future are divine blessings and gifts. Despite the wide gaps between economic theory and Christian belief some points of contact can be made, and there are suggestions as to how a dialogue between them might be conducted.
