Download or read book A Companion to Reformed Orthodoxy written by Herman Selderhuis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects and comprises the latest in research on the history and theology of Reformed Orthodoxy (± 1550-1750) and is at the same time a work in progress, which makes this volume in the Companion series unique. The reason for this is not only the quality of the authors and the chapters they have produced, but also the fact that the study of Reformed Orthodoxy has in recent years taken an entirely new approach and has received renewed and spirited attention, whose results have so far not been brought together in one book. The renewed interest and reappraisal of this period in intellectual history is reflected in this work in which an international team of renowned scholars give an oversight of this fascinating period in intellectual history. Contributors include Willem van Asselt, Aza Goudriaan, Irena Backus, Mark Beach, Christian Moser, Anton Vos, Tobias Sarx, Andreas Mühling, Carl Trueman, Graeme Murdock, Joel Beeke, Sebastian Rehnman, Scott Clark, John Fesko, Luca Baschera, Maarten Wisse, Hugo Meijer, Pieter Rouwendal, and John Witte.
Book Synopsis John Witherspoon's American Revolution by : Gideon Mailer
Download or read book John Witherspoon's American Revolution written by Gideon Mailer and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1768, John Witherspoon, Presbyterian leader of the evangelical Popular party faction in the Scottish Kirk, became the College of New Jersey's sixth president. At Princeton, he mentored constitutional architect James Madison; as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress, he was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. Although Witherspoon is often thought to be the chief conduit of moral sense philosophy in America, Mailer's comprehensive analysis of this founding father's writings demonstrates the resilience of his evangelical beliefs. Witherspoon's Presbyterian evangelicalism competed with, combined with, and even superseded the civic influence of Scottish Enlightenment thought in the British Atlantic world. John Witherspoon's American Revolution examines the connection between patriot discourse and long-standing debates--already central to the 1707 Act of Union--about the relationship among piety, moral philosophy, and political unionism. In Witherspoon's mind, Americans became different from other British subjects because more of them had been awakened to the sin they shared with all people. Paradoxically, acute consciousness of their moral depravity legitimized their move to independence by making it a concerted moral action urged by the Holy Spirit. Mailer's exploration of Witherspoon's thought and influence suggests that, for the founders in his circle, civic virtue rested on personal religious awakening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland has long been known for its emphasis upon an educated clergy, yet little serious historical attention has been given to how this was actually fostered. This book begins to fill that gap. While a thoroughly historical study in Scottish church history and historical theology, the book also serves as a springboard for reflection and application to the work of theological education today with the evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed community.
Book Synopsis Philosophy and Religion in Enlightenment Britain by : Ruth Savage
Download or read book Philosophy and Religion in Enlightenment Britain written by Ruth Savage and published by Oxford University Press (UK). This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy and Religion in Enlightenment Britain explores some of the themes and issues that exercised thinkers concerned with religion and philosophy, and their interrelatedness, in the period known as the long eighteenth century, while illustrating the techniques and style of intellectual history as practised in the early twenty-first century. The volume will encourage further understanding of the influences that were current at the time that some of the most significant works in western philosophy were written, and use primary materials to achieve this. The essays presented here have been specially commissioned from both established, distinguished collaborators and young, up-and-coming scholars, to illustrate the breadth and diversity of philosophy in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This was a period when ideas were being formed and developed against a background of evolving views in science, politics, and religion, and in light of their implications for traditional religious belief and thought. The figures examined range from Locke and Hume to lesser known personalities who provide a different perspective on the intellectual environment of the time, such as Samuel Halliday, Martin Clifford, and Henry Scougal. In addition, the volume contains new transcriptions of two revealing works by Hume: a letter illustrating his later attitude to political theory, and an early essay on ethics and chivalry.
