Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Singers of Germany The hymns of Germany are so steadily becoming naturalized in England that English readers may be glad to know something of the men who wrote them, and the times in which they had their origin. Scarcely one of the numerous hymn-books which have been compiled here within the last fifteen years is without its proportion - sometimes a considerable proportion - of German hymns. This is, in fact, one of the many ways in which the literature of each nation now tends to become, through the medium of translations, the common property of both. But hymns form only a part, though an important part, of the religious poetry of Germany, which itself constitutes but one sharply defined branch of the general literature of the country. Yet it is impossible to trace the course historically of even this one channel of national expression, without being brought into contact with those great movements which have stirred the life of the people, and finding the passing fashions of each successive age, in thought or phraseology, reflected from its surface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twice Around the World With Alexander: Prince of Gospel Singers One striking feature of the German Reformation was the admission of the Congregation into a singing share of the religious service. Luther himself became a writer of hymns; and many of his gifted countrymen produced Christian lyrics to meet the popular demand. So marked was the result of this innovation that from a hostile source came the sneer that the peopl'e were singing themselves into the Lutheran doctrine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyra Germanica: Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year The following hymns are selected from the' Chevalier Bunsen's Versuch' eine's allgemeinen Gesang und Gebetbuchs, published in 1833. From the large number there given, about nine hundred, little more than one hundred have been chosen. This selection contains many of those best known and loved in Germany but in a work of this size it is impossible to include all that have become classical in that home of Christian poetry. In reading them it must' be remembered that they are hymns, not sacred poems, though from their length and the intricacy of their metres, many of them may seem to English readers adapted rather to purposes of private than of public devotion. But the singing of hymns forms a much larger and more important part of public worship in the German Reformed Churches than in our own services. It is the mode by which the whole congregation is. Enabled to bear its part in the worship of God, answering in this respect to the chanting of our own Liturgy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Present Century From the German This collection is entirely composed of hymns written or first published in the nineteenth century. The reasons which have led the translator to confine himself to this period are, because many of the sacred poets of the time take a high place on their own merits among the Christian singers of Germany; and because a large number of the writers and hymns of this period are unknown to English readers. Some of the most popular ones in Germany to-day seem to have attracted little or no attention in our own country. This limitation of the area of choice gives its distinctive character to the present collection of German hymn translations. Book excerpt: The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection encapsulates an extraordinary confluence of theological inquiry, philosophical meditation, and literary artistry. This anthology traverses a vast temporal landscape, from the patristic period to the threshold of the contemporary, gathering a multitude of voices that have shaped Christian thought and the broader cultural legacy of humanity. It juxtaposes the divine comedy of Dante Alighieri with the existential musings of Friedrich Nietzsche, the transcendental reflections of Ralph Waldo Emerson with the spiritual allegories of John Bunyan, and the mystic insights of St. Teresa of Ávila with the practical Christianity of Charles M. Sheldon, showcasing an unparalleled range of literary styles and theological perspectives. The collection stands as a testimony to the enduring dialogue between faith and reason, individual belief and societal norms. The contributing authors and editors, drawn from varied epochs and geographies, reflect a rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts. Figures like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Leo Tolstoy stand alongside St. Augustine and Martin Luther, exemplifying the anthologys alignment with significant historical and literary movements. This diversity not only illuminates the multifaceted nature of Christian thought but also demonstrates how these varied voices contribute to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the anthologys central themes. Such an assemblage encourages readers to discern the intricate relationships between faith, culture, and personal conviction across different periods and places. The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection is an indispensable volume for those interested in the intersection of faith, literature, and philosophy. It offers readers the unique opportunity to engage with a wide array of perspectives and themes, encouraging a comprehensive exploration of Christian belief as both a personal journey and a collective experience. This anthology is not merely a scholarly endeavor but a voyage through time and thought, inviting readers to ponder profound questions and explore the myriad ways in which the pursuit of belief shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves. As such, it is highly recommended for students, scholars, and anyone with a keen interest in the historical and philosophical dimensions of faith.
