Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Singers of Germany The hymns of Germany are so steadily becoming naturalized in England that English readers may be glad to know something of the men who wrote them, and the times in which they had their origin. Scarcely one of the numerous hymn-books which have been compiled here within the last fifteen years is without its proportion - sometimes a considerable proportion - of German hymns. This is, in fact, one of the many ways in which the literature of each nation now tends to become, through the medium of translations, the common property of both. But hymns form only a part, though an important part, of the religious poetry of Germany, which itself constitutes but one sharply defined branch of the general literature of the country. Yet it is impossible to trace the course historically of even this one channel of national expression, without being brought into contact with those great movements which have stirred the life of the people, and finding the passing fashions of each successive age, in thought or phraseology, reflected from its surface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a clear and concise translation of some of the old German hymns that were used in the Medieval Church this volume contains both series of the Lyra Germanica for students to read and study with the hopes that these poems will help someone to discover the old nuances in medieval poetry and also to draw closer to God. While these hymns may seem hard to sing or even digest at times, they are an important part of the history of the Christian Church that to ignore them would be a great disservice to everything that Christian theologians have fought for in the last two thousand years since the coming and resurrection of the only true Lord, Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: How might Ambrose of Milan, Hildegard of Bingen, and Catherine of Siena inspire us to improve Sunday worship? What about Lawrence, John of Damascus, Thomas Cranmer, Johannes Kepler, Margaret Fell, and Dorothy Day? Even Amy Carmichael can point our assemblies toward more profound worship. In Saints on Sunday, Lutheran laywoman Gail Ramshaw, listening to twenty-four sainted voices, proposes how our past might enliven our future. Characterized by rigorous scholarship and no-nonsense honesty, her essays suggest ways to enrich the gathering, word, meal, and sending of our assemblies on Sunday.
