Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Mysticism and Other Essays The essay which gives its title to this little book was prepared as a paper to be read before the Ministerial Association of my home city. The other two studies have been adapted from sermons preached to my people in the course of my regular ministry. There is no need to tell the observing reader that none of these pages were written with any thought that they might ever appear in the semi-permanent form in which he here finds them. Their appearance is wholly due to the efforts of Mr. Harold Marshall, the presiding genius of the Murray Press, a brother for whom I feel very much admiration and love; he insisted on gathering my fugitive pages into a volume at a time when the pressure of work made it impossible to recast them in more appropriate form. My sole justification for giving so imperfect a little book to the public is the hope that it may lead some kindred spirit to seek a closer walk with that little band of God-intoxicated spirits who hold in their hands today, as ever before, the destinies of religion. The discerning reader will have found that my study of "The Secret Place of the Most High" was written under the immediate inspiration of Dr. James Martineau's masterly sermons on "The Sphere of Silence." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Mysticism and Other Essays So we are forced to ask ourselves, what is the essential element in spiritual experience? Which of the many states and revelations described by the mystics are integral parts of it; and what do these states and degrees come to, when we describe them In the current phraseology and strip off the monastic robes in which they are usually dressed? What elements are due to the suggestions of tradition, to conscious or unconscious symbolism, to the misinterpretation of emotion, to the invasion of cravings from the lower centres, or the disguised fulfilment of an unconscious wish? And when all these channels of illusion have been blocked, what is left? This will be a difficult and Often a painful enquiry. But it is an enquiry which ought to be faced by all who believe in the validity of man's spiritual experience; in order that their faith may be established on a firm basis, and disentangled from those unreal and impermanent elements which are certainly destined to destruction, and with which it is at present too often confused. I am sure that at the present moment we serve best the highest interests of the soul by subjecting the whole mass of material which is called mysti cism to an inexorable criticism. Only by inflicting the faithful wounds of a friend can we save the science of the inner life from mutilation at the hands of the psychologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden of Nuts: Mystical Expositions With an Essay on Christian Mysticism Of the two parts of this little volume, the first was delivered as a lecture at the Glasgow Summer School of Theology in 1905. The expositions which follow are reprinted from the British Weekly. Throughout I am constantly indebted to the works of Dr. Neale and Mr. Spurgeon, and especially to the writings of Mr. Arthur Edward Waite. Mr. Waite has been good enough to help me with many valuable suggestions. The original translation of the poem by St. John of the Cross has been contributed by my friend and colleague, Miss Jane T. Stoddart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and comprehensive anthology, culled from the vast corpus of Christian mystical literature by the renowned theologian and historian Bernard McGinn, presents nearly one hundred selections, from the writings of Origen of Alexandria in the third century to the work of twentieth-century mystics such as Thomas Merton. Uniquely organized by subject rather than by author, The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism explores how human life is transformed through the search for direct contact with God. Part one examines the preparation for encountering God through biblical interpretation and prayer; the second part focuses on the mystics’ actual encounters with God; and part three addresses the implications of the mystical life, showing how mystics have been received over time, and how they practice their faith through private contemplation and public actions. In addition to his illuminating Introduction, Bernard McGinn provides accessible headnotes for each section, as well as numerous biographical sketches and a selected bibliography. Praise for The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism “No one is better equipped than Bernard McGinn to provide a thorough and balanced guide to this vast literature….This is an anthology which deserves to be read not only by those who study Christian history and theology, but by believers who long to deepen their own lives of prayer and service.” -- Anglican Theological Review “Bernard McGinn, a preeminent historian and interpreter of the Christian mystical tradition, has edited this fine collection of mystical writings, organizing them thematically....McGinn offers helpful introductions to each thematic section, author and entry, as well as a brief critical bibliography on mysticism. Published in the Modern Library Classic series, this is a great value.” – Christian Century "No-one is better equipped than Professor McGinn to provide a thorough and balanced guide to this vast literature. A first-class selection, by a first-class scholar." -- Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury “This accessible anthology by the scholarly world’s leading historian of the Western Christian mystical tradition easily outstrips all others in its comprehensiveness, the aptness of its selection of texts, and in the intelligent manner of its organization.” -- Denys Turner, Horace Tracy Pitkin Professor of Historical Theology, Yale Divinity School "An immensely rich anthology, assembled and introduced by our foremost student of mysticism. Both the scholar and the disciple will find God’s plenty here." -- Barbara Newman, Professor of English, Religion, and Classics, John Evans Professor of Latin, Northwestern University "An unusually clear and insightful exposition of major texts selected by one of the greatest scholars in the field of Christian mysticism, based on his vast erudition and uniquely sensitive interpretation. Like his other books, this one too is destined to become a classic.” -- Professor Moshe Idel, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Mysticism: A Lecture Delivered Before the Theological Union of the Hamilton Conference, June 4th, 1907 These short definitions will afford us at least a starting point in our study of the subject, and from them it will be perceived that it deals with man in relation to the spiritual and divine; and in these days, when Rationalism, Ritualism, and Materialism are so rampant, it is surely a hopeful sign that Mysticism is again coming to the front; for we believe it will prove a valuable antidote to this trinity of evils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystical Knowledge of God: An Essay in the Art of Knowing and Loving the Divine Majesty In the pulpit it was natural to speak tanquam potestatem habens, as one having a divine mandate to fulfil. In these pages I have not much departed from the same homiletic or hortatory style, judging it to suit the purpose of the work. We cannot improve upon the Fathers of the Church, from, let us say, Dyonisius the Areopagite, down to St. Francis of Sales: in my opinion a grievous mistake has been made in giving to works of piety too didactic a form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A marvelously readable translation of the great Middle English classic of Christian mysticism—now part of the beautifully designed Shambhala Pocket Library collection This anonymous fourteenth-century text is the glory of English mysticism, and one of the most practical and useful guides to finding union with God ever written. Carmen Acevedo Butcher’s new translation is the first to bring the text into a modern English idiom—while remaining strictly faithful to the meaning of the original Middle English. The Cloud of Unknowing consists of a series of letters written by a monk to his student or disciple, instructing him (or her) in the way of Divine union. Its theology is presented in a way that is remarkably easy to understand, as well as practical, providing advice on prayer and contemplation that anyone can use. Previous translations of the Cloud have tended to veil its intimate, even friendly tone under medieval-sounding language. Carmen Butcher has boldly brought the text into language as appealing to modern ears as it was to its original readers more than five hundred years ago.
