Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most urgent issues in contemporary American law—namely, the logic and limits of extending free exercise rights to corporate entities. Pointing to the polarization that surrounds disputes like Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, David argues that such cases need not involve pitting flesh-and-blood individuals against the rights of so-called “corporate moral persons.” Instead, David proposes that such disputes should be resolved by attending to the moral quality of group actions. This approach shifts attention away from polarizing rights-talk and towards the virtues required for thriving civic communities. More radically, however, this approach suggests that groups themselves should not be viewed as things or “persons” in the first instance, but rather as occasions of coordinated activity. Discerned in the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, this reconceptualization helps illuminate the moral stakes of a novel—and controversial—form of religious freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Taking the New Testament as the charter of Christian liberty, distinguished biblical scholar James D. G. Dunn approaches the complex subject of freedom from the perspective of Scripture in order to demonstrate what is distinctively Christian liberty." "After opening with an overview of the historical development of the concept of liberty, Dunn goes on to examine three scriptural "test cases" that help to elucidate the (often tense) relationship (1) between freedom and authority, as revealed in the responses of Jesus to the dominant conventions of his day, (2) between liberty and the self, derived from Paul's teaching about sin, death, and the law, and (3) between liberty and society, illustrated by a masterly exposition of Romans 14-15." "In a day when the forces of fundamentalism are gathering strength once again on all sides, the theme of liberty, and not least Christian liberty, is one that demands attention. This study shows that the "freedom of Jesus" is something no Christian need fear, that liberty is not a threat to faith but one of its prime expressions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Christians are often thought of as defending only their own religious interests in the public square. They are viewed as worrying exclusively about the erosion of their freedom to assemble and to follow their convictions, while not seeming as concerned about publicly defending the rights of Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and atheists to do the same. Andrew T. Walker, an emerging Southern Baptist public theologian, argues for a robust Christian ethic of religious liberty that helps the church defend religious freedom for everyone in a pluralistic society. Whether explicitly religious or not, says Walker, every person is striving to make sense of his or her life. The Christian foundations of religious freedom provide a framework for how Christians can navigate deep religious difference in a secular age. As we practice religious liberty for our neighbors, we can find civility and commonality amid disagreement, further the church's engagement in the public square, and become the strongest defenders of religious liberty for all. Foreword by noted Princeton scholar Robert P. George.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the leading historians of Christianity comes this sweeping reassessment of religious freedom, from the church fathers to John Locke In the ancient world Christian apologists wrote in defense of their right to practice their faith in the cities of the Roman Empire. They argued that religious faith is an inward disposition of the mind and heart and cannot be coerced by external force, laying a foundation on which later generations would build. Chronicling the history of the struggle for religious freedom from the early Christian movement through the seventeenth century, Robert Louis Wilken shows that the origins of religious freedom and liberty of conscience are religious, not political, in origin. They took form before the Enlightenment through the labors of men and women of faith who believed there could be no justice in society without liberty in the things of God. This provocative book, drawing on writings from the early Church as well as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, reminds us of how "the meditations of the past were fitted to affairs of a later day."
