Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism Scripturally Considered If any deny the Baptism of infants, it is for them to show that their rlght to it has ceased and that Jesus Christ has left them out of the church. The silence. Of the New Testament, .if it were silent respecting, i would leave them exactly where they had always been respecting their right to church membership. But it is not silent; it takes notice of infants, and that in a way to show that their right to their standing in the church has not ceased, butb is acknowledged and con; firmed by Jesus Christ himself. Markx. I3,14,1_6 'and they brought young children to him, that he should touch them. And his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. And he took them up in his arms, put chis hands upon them, and blessed them. Here we see young children brought to Christ. We see Christ much displeased with his dis ciples, when they rebuked those who brought them. He says, z.' Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not.' How tender and how emphati cal does the blessed Saviour speak! Suffer the'little children to come unto me.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture Baptism: Its Mode and Subjects IT is well known that there is some di versity of opinion and practice in regard to the mode of christian baptism. The far greater part Of evangelical christians, amount ing to more than nine-tenths of the whole, content themselves with a simple application Of water by pouring or sprinkling, as the most scriptural and significant mode. On the other hand, a large and respectable divi sion of the Protestant church insist upon a dipping Of the Whole body, as essential to the validity of the ordinance. Another smaller division as warmly contend that the baptism is not valid, unless the dipping is thrice repeated. Many sincere Christians dislike controversy, and, so far from engaging in it themselves, can scarcely allow that others should. An enlarged view of the history of the Chris tian church might serve to convince such persons. That error, when it does appear, should be met by a bold re-exhibition of the truth, seems to be one of the first duties which the church owes to her Divine Head. - Disc. On Nat. Rel. Est, pp 3, 4. J. Burnet. It is more pleasing at any time to harmonize with the great mass of mind around us; but we think it one of the strongest proofs we can give of our affection and regard for all our fellow-men, to tell them where we think them wrong. - Lec. On Pop. Errors in Rel, p. 88. J. C. L. Carson, M.D. The Opinion prevails rather extensively in this generation, that it is the duty of Christians to avoid controversy. This, however, appears to me to be sacrificing truth to peace. - The Heresies, &c p. 94. D. Fraser. - Ii even unimportant differences could be removed, this itself were an end not a little to be desired.-let. To Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, p. 8. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Christian Baptism The cause of the bible is the cause of God, and the only noble cause of men. The individual who contributes anything to the more wide diffusion of the light which is from heaven, among the inhabitants Of the earth, promotes that cause, ele vates the human character, and brings the world under Obligation to him as a benefactor at the same time he adds a note to the anthem once sung by angels Glory to God in the highest On earth peace; good will to ward men. In order to do this, it is not indispensable that new truth be discovered. The bible contains an entire and perfect theology; and to take of the things of Christ and show them to men, is enough. This the Christian may do, as the instrument Of the Holy Spirit. It is a no less noble or useful work to help a Chris tian brother to clearer and brighter light, than to reflect the light on the darkness Of unregenerated minds. The main design Of this book is, to communicate important truths to scholars already in the school of Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book for the Times, or the Philosophy of Christian Baptism: Scripturally, Historically, and Rationally Established, by the Testimony of Numerous and Credible Witnesses, Both Ancient and Modern The plan adopted is, under each appmpri. Ate head, to state the proposition designed to be proved or illustrated, adduce the evidence, and draw conclusions from the whole. This plan, we think, will give both distinctness and force to the subject. It is due to say. That numerous authors, both ancient and mud ern, have contributed greatly in this humble effort, to furnish the reader with a kind of Test-book, on a subject, which, for centuries, has agitated the religious world. This gen eral acknowledgment of indebtedness, we trust, will be satisfactory; as we do not wish to en cumber the work with numerous names and titles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mode of Christian Baptism The mode of Baptism has been thoroughly discussed for three hundred years by the ablest Biblical scholars. To claim originality, therefore, at the present day for a work on this subject, would be presumption. All that one can now do, is to select from the facts of philology and history, availing himself of the results of modern research, place the argument in new lights, and adapt it to the wants of our time. The present work originated in a conviction of its necessity, not so much for the purpose of changing the mode of baptism among those who insist upon immersion, as to help those who are in doubt and inquiring for the truth. The author had seen strenuous efforts made in conversation, and by loan of books, to induce converts connected with other churches to be immersed, and had known some not a little perplexed by the arguments and objections they had heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism: In Two Parts; Part First, Its Subjects; Part Second, Its Mode, Obligation, Import, and Relative Order It is well known to the student in church history, that few, very few, since the days of the apostles, have ever openly held to the damnation of any of those infants who die in infancy. The Calvinistic school forms the largest exception. There have been those who have held that all unbaptized infants, dying in infancy, go to a sort of middle state, between heaven and hell, as the reader will see in the fifth chapter of this work. Others, as St. Austin, (see pp. 209 with more consistency, held that where the want of baptism was not the fruit of any wicked and wilful disposition of the individual, he would be saved without it. The Protestant Episcopal Church, it appears, chooses, in regard to the state Of unbaptized infants hereafter, to observe entire silence. (see pp. 270, 271, of this work.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bible History of Baptism In this connection the analogy of the forms of religions purify in g prevalent throughout the east is worthy of special notice. The Brahmin, before taking his morning's meal, repairs to the Ganges, carrying with him a brazen vessel. By hundreds, or by thousands, they enter: the stream, and while some take up the water in their vessels, and pour it over their persons, others plunge beneath the stream, for the purging away of their sins. Then filling the vessels, they repair to the'temple, and pour the water upon the idol, or as a libation, before it. The Parsee, worshiper of the sun, goes. In the morning, to river or sea, and entering until the waves are waist high, with his face toward the east, awaits the rising of the sun, when, using his joined hands as a dipper, he dashes water over his person and makes obeisance to his god. On the other hand, the Mohammedan, deriving his usage from the earlier Pharisaic ritual, repairs to the mosque, and from the tank in front, without entering it, takes, up water in his hands with which to bathe face, feet and hands, before presenting his prayers. By the corruptions in the Christian church, before exemplified, the key of knowledge was taken away from the people. The in structive meaning of the sacraments was obscured and obliterated, by the idea of their intrinsic efficacy for renewing the heart and aton ing for and purging sin. The preaching of the word was disparaged and ultimately set aside; the preachers having become propitiating priests, working regeneration by the baptismal-rite, and making atonement by the sacrifice of the mass. The corruption and tyranny of the clergy of the middle ages, and the ignorance, slavery and spir itual darkness which for centuries brooded over the people, were the inevitable results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Baptism The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction, to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear.
