Book excerpt: The beloved, bestselling book is back! Kau kau: It's the all-purpose pidgin word for food, probably derived from the Chinese "chow chow." On Hawaii's sugar and pineapple plantations, kau kau came to encompass the amazing range of foods brought to the Islands by immigrant laborers from East and West: Japanese, Portuguese, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans, Koreans and others. On the plantations, lunch break was "kau kau time," and the kau kau could be anything from adobo to chow fun to tsukemono. In Kau Kau: Cuisine and Culture in the Hawaiian Islands, author Arnold Hiura-a writer with roots in the plantation culture-explores the rich history and heritage of food in Hawaii, with little-known culinary tidbits, interviews with chefs and farmers, and a treasury of rare photos and illustrations. This hardcover book includes the essential-the "Kau Kau 100 Ethnic Potluck Primer," a guide to 100 different items commonly found in local cuisine-and the esoteric-a 1920's recipe for a "poi cocktail"-in a single, well-researched volume. From the early Polynesians to the chefs of fusion cuisine, Kau Kau follows those who have shaped Island society with their food and folkways: immigrant plantation workers from East and West, the military in wartime, modern entrepreneurs who tap the potential of local tastes and diversified agriculture, and many others.Recognized by critics and readers as a landmark chronicle of the Islands' unique culinary landscape, the book received the Hawaii Book Publishers Association's Ka Palapala Po'okela Award of Excellence in Cookbooks in 2010. The tenth anniversary reprint gives a new generation of food lovers a glimpse into the ways Hawaii's food and culture are inextricably intertwined-and why. The new edition includes fresh material exploring the evolution of food in Hawaii during the decade since the book was first published, and a foreword from respected Island chef Mark "Gooch" Noguchi of Pili Group.

This Twisted Tour Guide escorts you to the places locals don’t want to talk about anymore…the same places people once couldn’t stop talking about. Long after the screaming headlines and sensationalism has subsided, these bizarre, infamous and obscure historical sites remain hidden awaiting rediscovery. Each visitation site in this guide is accompanied by a story. Many of the narratives defy believability, yet they are true. The profiled cast of characters feature saints and sinners (with emphasis towards the latter). Notorious crimes, murders, accidental deaths, suicides, kidnappings, vice and scandal are captivating human interest tales. Paranormal activity in the aftermath is common. The photography from each profile showcases the precise location where each event occurred. The scenes can seem ordinary, weird and/or sometimes very revealing towards clarifying the background behind events. If you’re seeking an alternative to conventional tourism, this Twisted Tourist Guide is ideal. Each directory accommodates the restless traveler and even resident looking for something unique and different. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spotlighting Asian Americans on both sides of the motion picture camera, Countervisions examines the aesthetics, material circumstances, and politics of a broad spectrum of films released in the last thirty years. This anthology focuses in particular on the growing presence of Asian Americans as makers of independent films and cross-over successes. Essays of film criticism and interviews with film makers emphasize matters of cultural agency--that is, the practices through which Asian American actors, directors, and audience members have shaped their own cinematic images. One of the anthology's key contributions is to trace the evolution of Asian American independent film practice over thirty years. Essays on the Japanese American internment and historical memory, essays on films by women and queer artists, and the reflections of individual film makers discuss independent productions as subverting or opposing the conventions of commercial cinema. But Countervisions also resists simplistic readings of "mainstream" film representations of Asian Americans and enumerations of negative images. Writing about Hollywood stars Anna May Wong and Nancy Kwan, director Wayne Wang, and erotic films, several contributors probe into the complex and ambivalent responses of Asian American audiences to stereotypical roles and commerical success. Taken together, the spirited, illuminating essays in this collection offer an unprecedented examination of a flourishing cultural production. Author note: Darrell Y. Hamamoto is Associate Professor in the Asian American Studies Program at the University of California, Davis. He is the author of Nervous Laughter: Television Situation Comedy and Liberal Democratic Ideology, Monitored Peril: Asian Americans and the Poltics of Television Representation, and New American Destinies: a Reader in Contemporary Asian and Latino Immigration. Sandra Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Berkeley.
