It is a rich repository of a people’s deepest fears, hopes, and achievements, especially as it communicates spirituality, economic, and political realities. This volume examines the multiple roles of music in Zimbabwe, showing how Zimbabwean music has addressed the socio-economic, political and spiritual crisis that the country has endured in the last one and a half decades. While concentrating on the tumultuous 2000–2013 period, the themes that are addressed here are enduring. Thus, the book explores the interplay between music and gender, music and politics, and music and identity construction in Zimbabwe, and it interacts with most of the dominant genres in Zimbabwean music, including Sungura, ZORA, Chimurenga, Gospel and the Urban Grooves. This volume will interest specialists in the study of ethnomusicology, in addition to scholars of literature, religious studies, philosophy, theatre arts, political science, and history.

Although her life had been nothing but complex being in an abusive relationship with her child's father, Darius, the abuse began taking a toll on her life daily. Zoweh didn't feel she would ever be able to escape the wrath of her worst nightmare. She had no attachments in Chicago to anything besides her daughter, and at this point, Promise was the only thing in the world keeping her sane. Zoweh never knew she wanted, no, need a boss; that is until she met the alluring Truth D'Stefano. With a flourishing drug empire that he shared with his brothers, Chosen and Legend, Truth was the man to see in Chicago. Nothing moved in Chicago without Truth's say so. He never had a shortage of money or women, and never planned on slowing down on getting to the paper. Truth was living proof that life wasn't always hardcore and that money makes the world go around. That all changed with one unexpected encounter with the unforgettable Zoweh. Chosen, the middle and most deranged of the brothers, made sure his name held weight in the streets. He was a 'fuck love, get money' type of nigga, and he made sure any woman he came across knew that. There was just one woman he couldn't seem to shake for the life of him. Legend, the youngest brother with the most to prove, had tangled a web for himself and his brothers that he wasn't quite sure he would make it out of alive. With his marriage and relationship with his brother's on the line, will Legend make the right decision? It has been a roller coaster ride for Truth and Zoweh since the fateful night they met. Will they be able to withstand and hold down that spot of being The Beauty and the Boss of Chicago?

Book Synopsis We think What We Eat by : Seth Daniel Kunin
Download or read book We think What We Eat written by Seth Daniel Kunin and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-10-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In We Think What We Eat, Seth Kunin presents both an appreciation and critique of Professor Mary Douglas' classical work on Israelite food rules. He places her arguments into the context of related anthropological approaches and suggests a new interpretation of the food rules system based on a rigorous application of structuralist theory. Kunin then goes on to extend this analysis to other areas of Israelite culture. Through detailed analysis of texts from Genesis, Exodus and Judges, he demonstrates that the same structural pattern found in the first section in respect of ritual is also characteristic of the mythological material. This section of the book also takes up the issue of structural transformation. It examines the processes found as the myths move from the Israelite context to that of the rabbis, the authors of the New Testament and of the Book of Mormon. The arguments presented demonstrate that as the myths move from culture to culture diachronically and geographically while the same mythological elements are retained they are restructured and organized based on the structural needs of the new cultural context. Kunin is also interested in issues of structuralist theory. Thus, he addresses issues related to the processes of structural transformation - suggesting processes that lead to changes in structural emphasis and those relating to more significant transformations. This is volume 412 in the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement series.

Download or read book Against Humanity written by Sam Dubal and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Gunya is a woman in her late twenties. Soldiers of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) abducted her when she was eleven years old and forcefully conscripted her into the rebel ranks. Gunya spent a little over a decade with the rebels before deserting. While there, she gave birth to a son with Onen, an LRA soldier. Though abducted, she expresses her continued support for the LRA and their tactics, admitting that she sometimes thinks of going back to the lum [bush] when life becomes hard as a civilian at home.” This is not a book about crimes against humanity. Rather, it is an indictment of the very idea of humanity, the concept that lies at the heart of human rights and humanitarian missions. Based on fieldwork in northern Uganda, anthropologist and medical doctor Sam Dubal brings readers into the inner circle of the Lord’s Resistance Army, an insurgent group accused of rape, forced conscription of children, and inhumane acts of violence. Dubal speaks with former LRA rebels as they find personal meaning in wartime violence, politics, and spirituality—experiences that observers often place outside of humanity’s boundaries. What emerges is an unorthodox and provocative question: What would it mean to be truly against humanity? And how does one honor life existing outside hegemonic notions of the good?

Download or read book Envy written by Bob Sorge and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Envy might well be termed the silent sin. Because while all of us envy others to some extent, few of us acknowledge our problem out loud, let alone try to overcome it and move forward. Bob Sorge draws upon his own pastoral experience--plus the admitted burden of his own envy--to show why and how it can adversely affect the ministry of a church and even prevent revival in people's lives. Sorge reveals why comparison of our ministry and spiritual gifts to that of our fellow believers is to be avoided at all costs so that we do not hamstring God's plan for our growth and the accomplishment of His purposes. This is a must-read for leaders of all churches, great and small--and anyone who wants the peace that comes with a life free of envy.
