Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This method synthesizes a work I began in 1987 which involved several vocal ensembles. Above all, I would like to mention “Gaudium choir” to whom are dedicated most of these exercises. This method has been thought as a sort of “ideal journey” that can be done by a choir or vocal ensemble for a period of a decade at least. These exercises have been written with the aim to fill in, until a certain extent, choir-singers technical and musical deficiencies, as my choir has. Many of the singers with whom I have worked, seem to have problems in reading or learning music, in particular in memorizing texts. They were often lacking a sense of rhythm, besides having a musical ear to improve as a result of many intonation problems (ex. diatonic intervals within the same pure octave). Sometimes our amateur choirs, but also professional ones, are lacking in some important parts considered essential for a musician background however underestimated or even ignored by many choirmasters. I have decided to entitle this book: “New practical method: functional exercises for choir” because each exercise has been thought to improve a specific musical matter as vocal training, musical phrasing and intonation. Exercises are not in a progressive order, as usual, but alternately according to their musical and didactic function. The method shows a sort of “general plan” which can be followed by a choirmaster; however, it can be used also, as a kind of “Reference book”, that I wish can be useful to improve choir musical skills. In my opinion, methods that are structured according to ascending levels of difficulties, are never going to be done until the end. Usually, the simpler exercises are carefully chosen from the index by students to avoid the most difficult ones, which are obviously omitted. This necessarily means that a student will not improve as much as he could do from his initial stage of knowledge. Each exercise has been thought to solve one by one choir problems and those of a single voice. This manual is divided into four sections: the first part contains vocalizes and preparatory exercises or a series of exercises that can be learned by a group in a very short time if they are practiced with patience, constant effort and methodology. In the second section you can find “Exercises to sung reading on different tempos”. These pieces are written following the main harmonic-scheme: I-IV-I (2r) V-I of major scale and can be performed also in minor keys as all the other exercises of this method. Voices can be freely moved around to obtain various choral sounds and also many other ways to solve vocal intonation problems of a choir. When a choir-singer will have learned the basic harmonic-scheme he can concentrate on rhythm and different tempos that are going to change for each exercise. In this way, choir singer will improve his reading skills in a natural way. Third section is on “Polyphonic singing”. Based on the same harmonic-scheme, these exercises are at a higher level with a contrapuntal writing inside. Then we get to the “heart” of this method: “Practical exercises for choir”. It consists in different exercises for choral singing, using specific techniques to raise the level of the choir from both a technical and musical point of view. These techniques combine intonation as psycho-acoustic features, without forgetting a careful ear-training and an effective memorization. Each exercise should be practiced using all possible phonemes. For this reason it is necessary that the choirmaster changes consonants and vowels articulation to solve specific problems of the choir. I hope it is quite clear that the use of consonants and vowels in the exercises, as well as dynamics, are merely intended as suggestions and can be changed at any time. I wish with this method to be able to help any choir to improve and get better. One’s never have to forget that a chorus is a wonderful, but at the same time, mysterious instrument. Here you can express the deepest feelings of human beings, make closer friends, improve your temperament and much more. At last, I must say, that a choir is mainly a “school of life” that is the highest way to practice “Great music”, without forgetting that is also the most economical one! Daniele Venturi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is what the experts are saying:"Donald Brinegar's deeply scholarly, highly original "Pitch Perfect" is the result of his life-long study and practice of choral tuning. His decades of workshops on this topic have become legendary and his book details numerous areas of theoretical and practical means that form the basis of his approach, including various tuning systems, scales and modes, tetrachords and the medieval hexachordal system, acoustics, text study, rehearsal techniques and many others, all carefully organized through a system of nested hierarchies grouping related topics. Brinegar then applies his theories to a number of specific compositions from the Renaissance to the present day. "Pitch Perfect" is an essential book for the library of all choral conductors, written by an esteemed choral master." -- Dr. Morten Lauridsen, Composer, University Professor, USC, National Medal of Arts Recipient, 2007."Pitch Perfect brilliantly combines two of Don Brinegar's lifelong loves - teaching and the art of comprehensive score preparation. He connects a wide variety of important technical data, puts it in his "teacher centrifuge," and the result is a unique and fresh new perspective on musical nature, with practical application to conducting, score analysis, and performance. Serious emerging and seasoned conductors need a copy of this book!" Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, Composer and University Professor"My musical life changed when I discovered that the major third my tenors were singing at the final cadence of a Renaissance motet WERE in tune, but it was in tune to a different tuning system than the tempered piano. THANK Y0U maestro Brinegar for sharing your tuning system with me more than twenty years ago and codifying it in "Pitch Perfect." The tuning system outlined in this new book (with historical musical examples from major composers) is cellular, functional, historical, lunar, mathematical, musical, natural, over-tonal, partial, philosophical, practical, scientific, solar, spiritual, tetra-chordal, under-tonal, hexa-chordal, and visual. Vocal colors emerge from a natural system of balancing and tuning chords. Functional and helpful conducting gestures suggest themselves from an understanding of the tuning hierarchy. Sharing this tuning system with my singers enabled them to sing more beautifully, more balanced, more resonant, and more expressive than ever before, and has influenced all of my compositions. "Pitch Perfect" WORKS!" Dr. Ronald Kean, Composer and Professor Emeritus."Don is a master teacher. Over the years many of us have been greatly influenced by his work through his choirs, his choral adjudications, and in his classroom. In this book, Don eloquently and systematically explains his "principles and foundations" for improved intonation through his words and numerous musical examples. This book is a compilation of his lifetime journey of listening, learning, reflecting, and teaching--as if you were sitting in his classroom or speaking to you personally." Dr. J. Edmund Hughes, University Professor of Choral Studies."I have been singing out of tune with nature. This one idea made me want to dig deeper into this book and not put it down.As a choral singer and a conductor, this book is changing how I hear, how I rehearse, and how I sing. What a journey! Thank you, Don, for sharing your knowledge and your life-long love of choral beauty." Jenny Tisi, Choral Director and Vocalist."A big thank you to Donald Brinegar for this magnificent gift to the music community. The intellectual rigor of addressing this comprehensive subject is astounding. Professor Sigrid Johnson, Renowned Choral Conductor.Coming Soon!!! Book excerpt: "Sound" is the chemistry of musical sounds intended to culminate in the potential of not just sound, but beautiful sound; not just expression, but enhanced and beautiful expression. In the case of a choral ensemble, this sound ideal is the result of many important factors. "Precision Conducting: Achieving Choral Blend and Balance" presents a thorough yet practical discussion of these factors, which include determining the vocal classification and the physical placement of singers; techniques to achieve rhythmic precision, vowel unification and good intonation; and performance practice in each of the major historical periods. Each major focus area also includes short, targeted lists of Guiding Principles, Common Tendencies, and Problems and Suggested Solutions, along with tips for Problem Solving. A reproducible IPA Chart as well as Audition and Evaluation Materials are included, as is "The Choral Singer's Guide to Good Vocal Production," a handout for your choir members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing has been a characteristic behaviour of humanity across several millennia. Chorus America (2009) estimated that 42.6 million adults and children regularly sing in one of 270,000 choruses in the US, representing more than 1:5 households. Similarly, recent European-based data suggest that more than 37 million adults take part in group singing. The Oxford Handbook of Singing is a landmark text on this topic. It is a comprehensive resource for anyone who wishes to know more about the pluralistic nature of singing. In part, the narrative adopts a lifespan approach, pre-cradle to senescence, to illustrate that singing is a commonplace behaviour which is an essential characteristic of our humanity. In the overall design of the Handbook, the chapter contents have been clustered into eight main sections, embracing fifty-three chapters by seventy-two authors, drawn from across the world, with each chapter illustrating and illuminating a particular aspect of singing. Offering a multi-disciplinary perspective embracing the arts and humanities, physical, social and clinical sciences, the book will be valuable for a broad audience within those fields.
