Book Synopsis Contaminants of the Great Lakes by : Jill Crossman
Download or read book Contaminants of the Great Lakes written by Jill Crossman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the globally important freshwater resource of the Great Lakes, which is currently threatened by contaminants that compromise water quality and impact its ecological and economic health. Divided into four parts, this volume covers historic, current and emerging sources of contamination from heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants to microplastics; and identifies their ecological impacts. Due to factors ranging from rapidly changing land use practices, climate change and our emerging understanding of their impact on biological, chemical and physical interactions, the effectiveness of management strategies has proven highly variable. Continued enhancements in the rate of lake recovery are required to sustain the health of the Great Lakes. Accordingly, the book also explores recent advances in contaminant detection, along with future steps forward in lake management approaches. Revealing our current knowledge gaps and providing a roadmap towards sustainable solutions, the book offers a valuable asset for scientists, managers and the public alike.

Download or read book Toxic Contamination in Large Lakes written by Schmidtke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every notable aspect of Toxic Contamination in Large Lakes is examined by known experts from every continent. Authors represent the U.S. and Canada, Argentina, Sweden, USSR, Israel, Great Britain, Japan, China, The Netherlands, Germany, Kenya, Austria. Authors represent the entire spectrum-academia, government, and industry. The first published work offer such a diverse and complete examination of this subject, it provides valuable information and data for today and tomorrow-and the basis for stimulating new research. Chapters in this work were reviewed and carefully edited, after initial presentation at the World Conference on Large Lakes held May 18-21, 1986 at Mackinac Island, Michigan. It presents a wealth of information...a resource for continued use over the years...and should do much to stimulate further study. This vital work is especially of interest to environmental scientists and toxicologists, fisheries professionals, researchers, aquatic resource managers, ecologists, biologists, chemists, and engineers. Every science or engineering library with a water interest should have this notable reference.

Book Synopsis Hazardous Metals in the Environment by : M. Stoeppler
Download or read book Hazardous Metals in the Environment written by M. Stoeppler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-04-13 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The execution of detailed studies on the fate and levels of hazardous elements in the environment, foodstuffs and in human beings has become a major task in environmental research and especially in analytical chemistry. This has led to a demand to develop new methodology and optimize that already in use. The book offers the reader a general introduction to the problem areas that are currently being tackled, followed by chapters on sampling and sample preservation, strategies and applications of the archiving of selected representative specimens for long-term storage in environmental specimen banks. This is supplemented by the example of wine as a preserved - frequently, already historical - specimen which clearly reflects technological changes over time. The following chapters review sample treatment, present an overview on the most frequently and successfully applied trace analytical methods for metals and metal compounds, and introduce the increasingly important methods for identifying and quantifying metal species in sediments and soils (speciation). The chapters in the second part of the book provide data on analytical methods for determining the levels of toxicologically, ecotoxicologically and ecologically important elements in environmental and biological materials, including information on the separation and quantification of chemical and organomatallic species. The elements treated are aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium and thallium. The final chapter treats quality assurance and the importance of the continuous use of appropriate reference materials to avoid erroneous results.
