Book excerpt: Task definition theoretically is one of the main components of self-regulated learning because one's representation of the task directs cognitive activities such as setting goals, creating plans, and enacting those plans to create task products. To date, little research has examined students' representations of tasks or how those representations change over time. In this dissertation I characterize students' initial representations of tasks and explore factors influencing how they refine these representations over time. Fifty-eight undergraduate students taking an undergraduate instructional psychology course participated in a semester-long examination of how students constructed and refined their task understanding. The data source was a studying portfolio consisting of detailed descriptions about and reflections on strategic processes they used to complete two main writing assignments in the course: a think paper and a design project. Analyses of these data suggest students' representations of tasks varied across two dimensions: breadth and depth. In terms of breadth, students selected information from the design project description of different grain sizes. Students with greater depth not only searched and selected information from the task, but they actively assembled elements of the task and monitored how those components fit with one another. Most students set goals and created plans; however, not all goals or plans were framed in light of criteria that would theoretically foster self-regulated learning. To revise task understanding, students metacognitively monitored their processes and outcomes of learning activities, which updated information about task, cognitive, and motivational conditions. This additional information afforded students opportunity to reassess the discrepancy between the initial state and the goal state to determine next steps to reach task goals. Although students may have recognized the need to change their approaches, they often failed to engage in effective metacognitive control to adapt approaches to learning. I interpret this to indicate that control processes require not only the skill for enacting these processes but also the motivational catalyst to sustain these efforts when competing factors are present. Future research should strive to create new measures for task understanding, and to track how students' perceptions and representations of tasks influence self-regulated learning and achievement.

The development of efficient chiral catalysts plays a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis. Although many chiral ligands/catalysts have been developed in the past decades, the most efficient catalysts are derived from a few core structures, called "privileged chiral catalysts". This ultimate "must have" and long awaited reference for every chemist working in the field of asymmetric catalysis starts with the core structure of the catalysts, explaining why a certain ligand or catalyst is so successful. It describes in detail the history, the basic structural characteristics, and the applications of these "privileged catalysts". This novel presentation provides readers with a much deeper insight into the topic and makes it a must-have for organic chemists, catalytic chemists, chemists working with/on organometallics, chemists in industry, and libraries. Book excerpt: Chiral Building Blocks in Asymmetric Synthesis A comprehensive introduction to the important classes of chiral building blocks Chirality — the asymmetric quality found in certain chemical compounds — plays an essential role in our world: chiral compounds can be found in biology, pharmaceutical compounds, agrochemicals, and fragrances. The stereoselective preparation of these complex molecular constructions constitutes a challenge. To this end, modern asymmetric synthesis utilizes a variety of valuable and efficient reagents employed as chiral auxiliaries, metal complexes and organocatalysts in stereoselective catalysis, and enantiopure reactants termed as chiral building blocks. In Chiral Building Blocks in Asymmetric Synthesis, the achievements in the fields of preparation of and applications of chiral blocks are presented. In doing so, the book comprehensively discusses the important classes of these reactants as the key for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral molecules. As such, it is an indispensable resource about synthetic methods, as well as possible modifications and transformations of important classes of chiral compounds. It also highlights the importance of their use as reactants and auxiliaries in the preparation of more sophisticated molecules or supramolecular systems. In Chiral Building Blocks in Asymmetric Synthesis readers will also find: Organization according to the most important compound classes — e.g. amino acids, BINOL and its derivatives, terpenes, and others — with an emphasis on synthesis and application A focus on the use of chiral building blocks for the preparation of bioactive compounds and supramolecular assemblies Chiral Building Blocks in Asymmetric Synthesis is a useful reference for organic chemists, catalytic chemists, chemists in industry, medicinal chemists, pharmaceutical chemists, and the libraries that support them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achiral wide bite angle ligands have been shown to be highly active and to induce excellent chemo- and regioselectivities in many homogeneously catalyzed reactions. However, only a few examples of chiral wide bite angle ligands are known so far. A diphenyl ether backbone was selected to allow maximum synthetic versatility and potential for a modular approach to design and synthesize such chiral diphosphorus ligands. Three synthetic strategies have been explored in this thesis: i) introduction of chiral substituents in the ligand backbone, ii) the use of P-stereogenic donor atoms and iii) the synthesis of chiral mixed-donor ligands bearing chiral auxiliary groups on the phosphorus atoms. Functionalization of the 3,3'-positions of 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)diphenyl ether by carboxylic acid or ether auxiliaries was achieved via straightforward four-step routes to generate a library of ligands that were tested in various catalytic reactions. In the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of l,3-diphenyl-2-propenyl acetate and cyclohexyl-2-enyl acetate with dimethyl malonate the enantioselectivity was found to depend on the size of the chiral auxiliary introduced within the diphenyl ether backbone and its proximity to the phosphorus donor groups and hence to the active metal centre. Two types of mixed donor bidentate diphosphorus ligands based on the diphenylether backbone have been established, i.e. phosphine-phosphite and phosphine-phosphonite derivatives. A small ligand library bearing different chiral auxiliaries was accomplished via straightforward syntheses that enable derivatization of the respective phosphite and phosphonite moieties in the final step. In the Rh-catalysed hydrogenation of several benchmark substrates high conversion and moderate to high enantioselectivities (up to 97% for dimethyl itaconate) were obtained. The enantioselectivity was influenced by the size of the ortho-substituent on the chiral auxiliary group of the phosphite or phosphonite fragment. Two modular synthetic approaches for the preparation of novel wide bite angle diphosphine ligands containing stereogenic P-atoms have been developed. Both protocols involved diphenylether as backbone and the chiral ephedrine based precursor (2R[subscript(P)],4S[subscript(C)],5R[subscript(C)])-oxazaphospholidine borane as initial auxiliary to induce chirality at phosphorus. Various novel diphosphines were isolated as highly enantioenriched compounds with dr-ratios up to 95:5.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, chirality is widely accepted as an important factor in molecular recognition processes and the biological activity of many pharmaceutical drugs and agrochemicals; this is confirmed by the continuous need for synthetic methods which lead to single or enriched enantiomers of such compounds. By presenting a review of the various and more recently developed approaches for both metal-transition and organocatalysis, this volume describes the development of “greener” asymmetric reactions which preserve stereoselectivity. The author summarizes the impressive amount of research that has been gathered within this field into three chapters focusing on: i)the search of alternative catalysts, ii) alternative solvents, and iii) alternative synthetic strategies and processes. For each topic, the fundamentals and some valuable applications are discussed.

Book excerpt: The Compendium is a detailed compilation of chiral auxiliaries which are used in the field of organic chemistry to direct "asymmetric synthesis". A molecule is called chiral because it can have two "enantiomers" -- like left and right-handed molecules. An enantiomer is either of two molecules of the same chemical composition that are mirror images of each other but not identical. A "chiral auxiliary" is an aid / auxiliary used to specifically produce either the left or right enantiomer of the chosen molecule, as desired. In this comprehesive reference source, industrial chemists can make informed selections of an auxiliary for a specific application. It is fully cross-referenced to enable the comparative selection of auxiliaries. The work includes over 13,000 auxiliary reaction applications with complete reaction details of the synthetic routes, reagents, and primary literature references. Key Features * This remarkable major reference work is the first such compilation and represents the only total source for the diverse applications of auxiliaries * Thoroughly cross-referenced to enable comparative

Book excerpt: The development of new methodology for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral organic compounds is a major focus in modem organic chemistry. The use of chiral catalysts is replacing chiral auxiliaries as a new tool for synthetic chemists. An efficient chiral catalyst allows for large quantities of optically active product to be obtained on use of relatively small amount of enantiopure material, without the need for the removal and recovery of a chiral auxiliary. Furthermore, the most practical catalytic methods utilize an inexpensive and readily available chiral ligand that can provide high and predictable enantioselectivity across a wide range of substrates. In our project, two type of versatile, upgraded chiral ligands have been designed and synthesized. Their application in Simmons-Smith type cyclopropanation is investigated, and the pleasing results suggest that they are the potential catalytic enantioselective candidates to build C-C bonds.
