Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grammar of Eton is the first description of the Cameroonian Bantu language Eton. It is also one of the few complete descriptions of a North-western Bantu language. The complex tonology of Eton is carefully analysed and presented in a simple and consistent descriptive framework, which permits the reader to keep track of Eton's many tonal morphemes. Phonologists will be especially interested in the analysis of stem initial prominence, which manifests itself in a number of logically independent phenomena, including length of the onset consonant, phonotactic skewing and number of tonal attachment sites. Typologists and Africanists working on morphosyntax will find useful analyses of, among others, gender and agreement; tense, aspect, mood and negation; and verbal derivation. They will encounter many morphosyntactic differences between Eton and the better known Eastern and Southern Bantu languages, often due to evolutions shaped by maximality constraints on stems. The chapters on clause structure and complex constructions provide data hardly found in sources on the languages of the region, including descriptions of non-verbal clauses, focus, quasi-auxiliaries and adverbial clauses.

Book excerpt: This book is essentially about stereotypes as found in the literature and culture of South Africa. It deals specifically with those people referred to in the South African racial legislation as ‘coloureds’. The book is also an illustration of the way in which stereotypes function as a means of social control and repression. First published in 1981. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island starts slowly moving back; the reverberations in the boat increase; the engine noise gets louder, and we feel the prison dock being torn from us. We are standing, silent, each at his own porthole, having our last look at what has been our home for ten years. There is a strange optical effect: the Island seems to get bigger as we get further from it. First we see only the little dock, then the rocks and bushes at either side and, finally, the whole expanding coastline, a complete island; a green and picturesque stretch of land in the ocean, the harsh monotony of its internal life totally hidden by its outer physical beauty ... Goodbye, Robben Island, may we never see you again, may all who live on your be liberated, may you go to hell, may you sink into the sea and become part of the bitter memories of the past, our past, of the past of apartheid. In 2001, Island in Chains was the runner-up for the prestigious Alan Paton Non-Fiction Prize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I hope this book will help all those who face the dilemmas of being Christian in this evil apartheid society and who, because of their commitment to the liberation struggle, can truly say they have no life of their own. --Frank Chikane Frank Chikane, one of the leading figures in the Christian resistance to apartheid, recounts his life--beginning with his childhood, growing up black under apartheid, and continuing through his call to Christian ministry. He tells of his family's increasing involvement in the struggle against apartheid, of disapproval and suspension from his own church. He relates a harrowing story of escalating harassment, detention and firebombing, torture and exile--and his return, despite death threats and further detention, to South Africa to continue the fight. Through it all, one thing is clear: Frank Chikane is a man whose faith compels and sustains him in a courageous and selfless journey toward freedom.

Book excerpt: Ukawsaw Gronniosaw (1705 - September 1775), also known as James Albert, was a freed slave and autobiographer. His autobiography is considered the first published by an African in Britain. This book gives a vivid account of Gronniosaw's life, from his capture in Africa through slavery to a life of poverty in Colchester and Kidderminster. He was attracted to this last town because it was at one time the home of Richard Baxter, a 17th-century Calvinist minister whom Gronniosaw much admired. This book has been deemed as a classic and has stood the test of time. The book has been considered by academicians and scholars of great significance and value to literature. This forms a part of the knowledge base for future generations.
