As a highly-educated woman, Ms. Qin was able to participate in the intellectual circle which her brother-in-law also belonged, therefore, her insight of his life and character goes beyond the family, providing a worldly view of a man who was a aspiring student, an enthusiastic intellectual, a successful businessman, and a generous philanthropist. Ms. Qin graduated from the former University of Shanghai, and then started a four-decade-long teaching career. Among her many accomplishments, she was Professor and Vice Chairwoman of the English Department (1964-1983) of Shanghai International Studies University, and a Visiting Professor/Researcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1986-1989). Before she died in 2006, she lived in San Jose, California.

Book excerpt: These short profiles are from a collection which aims to present the experiences and attitudes of a hundred Chinese from different walks of life as interviewed by Zhang Xinxin and Sang Ye during a year on the road. The hundred subjects chosen are not all "typical characters." Their ideas, lives and hopes may fall short of reflecting the reforms now taking place in our economy. All the same, they still illustrate something of this irresistible trend. They have widely divergent world-views and life experiences. This is a rich tapestry that represents a wide cross-section of contemporary Chinese society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 18 million young Chinese people were sent to the countryside between 1966 and 1976 as part of the Cultural Revolution. Mao's Children in the New China allows some of them to tell their moving stories in their own voices for the first time. In this inspiring collection of interviews with former Red Guards, members of the first generation to be born under Chairman Mao talk frankly about the dramatic changes which have occurred in China over the last two decades. In discussing the impact these changes have had on their own lives, the former revolutionaries give a direct insight into how ex-Maoists view contemporary China, revealing an attitude perhaps more critical than that of most Western commentators. These poignant memoirs tell the very personal stories of how people from all walks of life were affected by both the cultural revolution and Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms. They cover subjects as diverse as marriage and divorce, the privatization of industry, family relationships, universities and the stock market. Mao's Children in the New China is essential reading for all those interested in learning more about the personal and social history of modern China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the next decade, China could be home to more Christians than any country in the world. Through the 150-year saga of a single family, this book vividly dramatizes the remarkable religious evolution of the world’s most populous nation. Shanghai Faithful is both a touching family memoir and a chronicle of the astonishing spread of Christianity in China. Five generations of the Lin family—buffeted by history’s crosscurrents and personal strife—bring to life an epoch that is still unfolding. A compelling cast—a poor fisherman, a doctor who treated opium addicts, an Ivy League–educated priest, and the charismatic preacher Watchman Nee—sets the bookin motion. Veteran journalist Jennifer Lin takes readers from remote nineteenth-century mission outposts to the thriving house churches and cathedrals of today’s China. The Lin family—and the book’s central figure, the Reverend Lin Pu-chi—offer witness to China’s tumultuous past, up to and beyond the betrayals and madness of the Cultural Revolution, when the family’s resolute faith led to years of suffering. Forgiveness and redemption bring the story full circle. With its sweep of history and the intimacy of long-hidden family stories, Shanghai Faithful offers a fresh look at Christianity in China—past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: " . . . an important contribution to the study of recent Chinese literature." — Choice "This fine, scholarly survey of Chinese literature since 1949 . . . discusses such trends as modernism, nativism, realism, root-seeking and 'scar' literature, 'misty' poets, and political, feminist, and societal issues in modern Chinese literature." —Library Journal This volume is a survey of modern Chinese literature in the second half of the twentieth century. It has three goals: (1) to introduce figures, works, movements, and debates that constitute the dynamics of Chinese literature from 1949 to the end of the century; (2) to depict the enunciative endeavors, ranging from ideological treatises to avant-garde experiments, that inform the polyphonic discourse of Chinese cultural politics; (3) to observe the historical factors that enacted the interplay of literary (post)modernities across the Chinese communities in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas.
